128 seems impossibly indiscriminate

1423

Banning 128 fans seems impossibly indiscriminate.  I don’t know how it was decided but it sounds like “those eight columns and sixteen rows” – painting with a very broad brush.  If so, the Club must meet with those in the affected area as soon as possible to allow fans who have had nothing whatsoever to do with vandalism or dangerous behaviour to continue to follow their club.  If such a letter arrived on my doorstep, I would want to face the Club urgently.  We’ve all been tarred by the pyros, banners and vandalism, but some are paying a higher price.

Unless there is specific evidence against an individual, the default expectation must be that bans will be lifted after interview.

Back in July, after the Club and the Green Brigade met to agree a way forward following some early season Uefa disciplinary problems, we wondered if either could control every last hanger-on hoping to ‘stick it to the man’.  Statements in recent days from both organisations show how impossible this has proven to be.

When I wrote my article on Saturday I didn’t expect the condemnation of the previous night’s incidents, from all sections of the support, to be so comprehensive.  We’ve seen elsewhere the damage procrastination and deflection can be.  There is no need to deflect.  We will not blame Chelsea fans. Nor is there need for ‘whataboutery’. Vandalising seats and throwing flares is now endemic in our game but Celtic fans are judged by higher standards. The Celtic support is characterised by by enormous generosity. Still.

  1. There is a lot of ignorance about the not so highly secretive Green Brigade and their expressed attitude towards cooperation with other Celtic supporter groups and the Board. These two linked articles give some insight into their origins and approach.

Those that already know it all and who do not approve of being educated, should just scroll on by.

I am deeply offended by your statement that all casuals are from carntyne. I am from carntyne , born and bred and my son will be growing up in carntyne also. You sir have inflicted a deep wound to my character, a wound which is not easily healed. The only conclusion is for you to stop yer p#sh or yer gettin it.

  4. Albion Rovers v Motherwell…

A couple of days ago I asked someone to explain a reference to the above match. I was informed MW fans had trashed some seats and had flares or smoke bombs. I had obviously missed the reports in the msm.

Yesterday evening I heard HK insist no seats had been damaged at New Douglas Park. This despite his sister paper contradicting his supposed statement of fact.

Anyway last night I decided to ask Police Scotland if they were investigating vandalism at NDP since they had already announced the (proper) investigation of events at Fir Park.

Today I received a reply that the question had been referred to the Lanarkshire Division and a response would be given very soon.

When I get it I’ll let everyone know.

  5. weeminger,

Tried to find a link to this story for quite some time.

That was the only one I could find…no blanket coverage you see.

Every other link directed me to Fir Park on Friday…Hmmmmm

You called me a bum barer? Please explain, and I hope it is not what I think it means, what a Disscusting thing to say to any person, please do not mention my name in any of your vile posts, I have been called a few names since Saturday, but you crossed the line there, maybe one day our paths will cross and we can discuss it, as most people in here know I drink in the Brazen Head, Sunday is your best day to see me there, just ask anyone in the pub and they will point you in my direction, there will not be a problem, and we will discuss your opinion of me being a BUM BARER, normally as I have said many times peoples opinion of me are of no concern to me, but YOU crossed the line, disagree with ME yes, fill your boots, but naaaaaaa I am my fathers son and he was never nor was his father a BUM BARER.

The cricket has been mighty fine. The hiding on a flat track in Adelaide was a treat.

Bars in Montalbano land making money from Bangladeshis, Pakistanis and Indians watching the cricket on the tele. I was surprised that most seem to prefer England to Australia.. Arsenal / Chelsea and Man U shirts abound.

  9. the long wait is over on

I think the clubs broad brush approach is correct.

If you didn’t have anything to do with throwing flares or breaking seats there’s nothing to be concerned about and only those who , by admission or proof , were involved should be banned . Innocent until proven or admitted guilty has of course to apply but its right that anyone in the vicinity should be asked about what went on.

They should also be asked , without repercussion ,

    1. Did you see anyone near you breaking seats or throwing flares?

    2. If so did you report it to a steward?

    3. If you did report it then what was done, if anything?

    4. If you didn’t report it , why not?

As I’ve said those questions should be asked clearly on the basis that there are no repercussions if they refuse to reply or give the “wrong” answers.

I think that fans have to self police as its better that anything else. I clearly remember in the 70’s the bottle throwing was , at least partly , stopped by fans , and plenty of them , pointing out which maniacs had thrown them.

  10. Ironically,a lot of bhoys posting views that i might not particularly agree with, care more about the damage to our Club’s reputation, than the halfwits who done the damage at Fir Park.

Those responsible will be planning their next mission ,and will still be dining out from Friday’s notoriety.

With the match fixing scandal going on in England, Second Rangers midfielder Ian Black has moved swiftly to deny he has any involvement. Black was caught up in a betting scandal earlier this season, and has said he is not involved in any match fixing at all, and will be available for this Saturdays 4-1 win at Stenhousemuir.

  13. Is there a bum barer clique? Is it a good thing or bad thing to be a member? Is there a venn diagram of bum barers, Carmylites, casuals and pyro defenders? Are Celtic playing Barca this week? Is Carles Puyol playing (for either team)?
