128 seems impossibly indiscriminate

1423

Banning 128 fans seems impossibly indiscriminate.  I don’t know how it was decided but it sounds like “those eight columns and sixteen rows” – painting with a very broad brush.  If so, the Club must meet with those in the affected area as soon as possible to allow fans who have had nothing whatsoever to do with vandalism or dangerous behaviour to continue to follow their club.  If such a letter arrived on my doorstep, I would want to face the Club urgently.  We’ve all been tarred by the pyros, banners and vandalism, but some are paying a higher price.

Unless there is specific evidence against an individual, the default expectation must be that bans will be lifted after interview.

Back in July, after the Club and the Green Brigade met to agree a way forward following some early season Uefa disciplinary problems, we wondered if either could control every last hanger-on hoping to ‘stick it to the man’.  Statements in recent days from both organisations show how impossible this has proven to be.

When I wrote my article on Saturday I didn’t expect the condemnation of the previous night’s incidents, from all sections of the support, to be so comprehensive.  We’ve seen elsewhere the damage procrastination and deflection can be.  There is no need to deflect.  We will not blame Chelsea fans. Nor is there need for ‘whataboutery’. Vandalising seats and throwing flares is now endemic in our game but Celtic fans are judged by higher standards. The Celtic support is characterised by by enormous generosity. Still.

  1. MWD,

    birthday greetings,

when driving across the kingston bridge, in the westerly direction, the old factory there has a giant piece of graffiti, that spells out

    WMD.

allways gives me a chuckle and makes me think of your goodself.

    cheers.

    Weeminger-

Why should they have to? The club shouldn’t be banning fans without knowing whether they were involved or not.

  3. Big Nan

Ive explained what I meant by demise. Anyone could see this coming but those who did nothing to stop it would be daft to think the same approach will work.

But its nowt to me whether they do or not.

  4. Could be that I’m a bit on the thick side as QueenLubo thinks but why can’t the Green Brigade be like any other Celtic fans. I mean, I was young once and yeah probably a bit of a hot head but I went to the games with my mates, stood in the Jungle below the TV cameras and yelled and bawled but everybody did the same. Personally I feel the GB is divisive and think we should all pull together and sure, those outside the GB should be making a lot more noise, but hey, don’t we live in a democratic country, thought we did. Maybe I missed something!

All I know is that there is no-one alive who thinks more of this fine club of ours than I, so the GB are not new. And I don’t like the word Ultra! Why can’t we be original for a change instead of copying those loonies in Italy and elsewhere.

I do not want Celtic to get the reputation of other clubs, I want us to be held in the very highest regard by the football world. Any idiot can cause bother, are we no better????

    Hail Hail

    Now some questions:

    1. Ask anyone from the North of Ireland what a £10 tout is.

    2. Ask who benefits from the trouble caused by a small group while police and Stewards watch and take no action.

Following the revelations about use of undercover officers, informers etc in relatively peaceful protest groups and environmental groups you’d have to be mad to think that the cops don’t have one or two people giving them information or encouraging others to misbehave and discredit a group like the GB. The GB should look at the maddest elements either within or on the periphery and keep them at arms length.

We have been accused of paranoia for making conclusions about crazier things but the facts are that groups who don’t conform to the status quo are targeted by police for surveillance and infiltration. Maybe you think I’m mad……

But still, reach your own conclusions.

  6. craigneuktommygemmell have supportrs bn banned now? Where did you hear/see this? My understanding is they been suspended while each case is reviewed,is this now incorrect? Hail Hail Hebcelt

Mmm —– her normal practice is to drive with the left hand and use the right for smoking and holding her phone [ no need to worry about the gear , it’s already in top.} She prepared for that drive , she tested several possible choices of footwear, she choose which sunspecs. She didn’t smoke, she changed gears, she used the brakes. She enjoyed it so much she repeated it in the dark.

A woman who loved driving in Napoli , a woman who loves driving in Palermo . A woman with an astonishing vocabulary whilst driving.

  8. I was under the impression that only Suspensions had been handed out at this stage, pending further investigation.

That is massively different from being banned after an investigation has taken place.

Ask anyone who’s been suspended from work pending investigation.

It’s massively different from being sacked from work after an investigation has taken place.

It strikes me that only where actual proof exists of significant wrongdoing will actual bans be effected. Time will tell.

Well partly because that’s the whole point of taking seat details. See when they use CCTV to identify people misbehaving, it’s usually the case that they contact the ticket owner for the seat, they don’t actually do a photo-fit or have some polis going “oh aye that’s AN Other from Anytown, he’s a scally-way right enough”.

Plus, and I hope this is what happens (but severely doubt it), the club can contact Motherwell and say “Any chance of explaining why not one of those 128 ticket holders was in the seat allocated to them? What exactly were your stewards up to? Here’s a cheque for £2k, let’s leave it there shall we”.

Sorry I meant to say, and I know this is semantics but they’re not banned. We’ve already heard on here of somebody having the suspension lifted and they’ll be there on Saturday.

Disgraceful bullying and ridiculing of a fellow poster today, on the back of a crass insulting comment, has plumbed new depths.

It’s good news week! (What a song that was back in the day) Somebody should rewrite the lyrics. Anyways, just read that,as a result of our efforts out there on the pitch, (as opposed to our attempts to create a standing room only section at Fir Park), we will now start next year’s Champions League, (if we win our league first obviously) in the 2nd qualifying round. Our, well Scotland’s, UEFA coefficient is now 23, and moving in the right direction. Not sure how the dates pan out but it has got to help with our Bhoys from Brazil (waited a long time to use that one), and of course playing at Parkhead, assuming we are not banned of course.

nb The game against Barcelona counts too, re possible seeding etc.

I am surprised that you see the mild teasing as bullying. The poster in question has been equally scathing about those he sees as being on the other side to his and, despite olive branches from some, he chose the oppositional approach.

Genuine bullying is to be deplored. It can become harder to tackle if we mistake disagreement, even moderately robust disagreement, for bullying. That way leads to a an autocracy of the easily offended.

Have a nice Christmas when it comes.

  17. I wouldn’t worry too much Paul. This is mostly posturing from the club who feel they need to make a bold step. There is a feeding frenzy out there at the moment.

Everybody on here knows the regard Celtic are held with in Scotland and the rest of the UK. While there are a few fans out there who couldn’t give a monkeys about us, I guess the rest of all Scottish football fans hate us. The media are stirring the pot.

The vandalism at Fir Park was of course indefensible. Nobody here disagrees with that and we should never forget the poor behaviour of some of our fellow Celtic fans.

I cannot help but roll my eyes when some of us refer to ourselves as “the best fans in the world” because we are just building ourselves up for others to knock us down.

Offhand I think, that Celtic last season, on our own, (some on here like that kind of language), achieved a UEFA ranking co-efficient of 25. Fantastic effort of course, but it is Scotland’s co-efficient that counts, the clubs that is, not the national team. And that has improved, largely down to Celtic mind you.

  22. Celtic Mac,

I think phillis is meaning we entered at 2nd qualifying round this season too.

    Then played in 3rd q.r.

Then played in knock out round.

  23. IMO the GB will be back in Section 111 by the Ne’erday game v Thistle. Celtic had to be seen to be doing something regarding Friday night’s vandalism, rightly so. What they are trying to do is isolate the wee neds who have attached themselves to the GB coattails and ban them.

The board can handle the GB, it may be an uneasy relationship and they will never agree with all they do. but they know that they are not vandals/hooligans and bring much more positivity to CP than negativity.
