128 seems impossibly indiscriminate

1423

Banning 128 fans seems impossibly indiscriminate.  I don’t know how it was decided but it sounds like “those eight columns and sixteen rows” – painting with a very broad brush.  If so, the Club must meet with those in the affected area as soon as possible to allow fans who have had nothing whatsoever to do with vandalism or dangerous behaviour to continue to follow their club.  If such a letter arrived on my doorstep, I would want to face the Club urgently.  We’ve all been tarred by the pyros, banners and vandalism, but some are paying a higher price.

Unless there is specific evidence against an individual, the default expectation must be that bans will be lifted after interview.

Back in July, after the Club and the Green Brigade met to agree a way forward following some early season Uefa disciplinary problems, we wondered if either could control every last hanger-on hoping to ‘stick it to the man’.  Statements in recent days from both organisations show how impossible this has proven to be.

When I wrote my article on Saturday I didn’t expect the condemnation of the previous night’s incidents, from all sections of the support, to be so comprehensive.  We’ve seen elsewhere the damage procrastination and deflection can be.  There is no need to deflect.  We will not blame Chelsea fans. Nor is there need for ‘whataboutery’. Vandalising seats and throwing flares is now endemic in our game but Celtic fans are judged by higher standards. The Celtic support is characterised by by enormous generosity. Still.

  2. From the next edition of CQN Magazine

    Dateline 1 January 1902 – here’s a snippet for you to reflect on…

“…On resuming, the match developed into one of rough and tumble. Nicol Smith then equalised for Rangers from a free kick. However, the goal should not have stood. It appears that this was an indirect free-kick i.e. one from which the taker cannot score without first another player touching the ball. The ball was sent towards McFarlane in the Celtic goal, and there was a dash for it by a crowd of players. Then the ball was seen in the net, but the Celtic players vigorously protested that it had not touched anyone on the way. Referee Nisbet thought otherwise and awarded a goal, which occasioned a storm of protest. Five minutes after the interval Hamilton pushed the ball through to Campbell who went on to score. Celtic claimed that Campbell had handled but the referee differed again. Several of the Celtic players surrounded the referee whereupon McMahon attempted to trip him. McMahon was ordered off the field. And so Sandy McMahon of Celtic has the dubious distinction of being the first player to be ordered off in an Old Firm match…”

Same club? Same old Rangers. Always cheating. Might post another one. Anyone remember 7 January 1978?

I’m so glad I don’t know you Mr Donnelly, because I’m certain we would not be friends. I’d go as far to say if I knew you I’d think you were a racist wanker

Sorry mate I just don’t think that being in and around the troublemakers justifies a suspension.

We already have instances of people being advised of suspension who weren’t even at the game.

That tells me the PLC have buckled to SMSM pressure and just applied a scattergun approach to appease them.

    Not good imo

My father worked in the shipyards of Cape Cod and in hydro schemes in Winnipeg.

I never heard him utter a racist or sectarian term.

I do not believe I have judged you on your opinions on the GB.

Nor would I judge you on your use of words in CQN.

I think Big Jock would have said something like this if he was on CQN

“Only an idiot would judge another on CQN”

Prob. Not, and I don’t know you, but as far as the wise crack on the quiz show host, I don’t know who that would be, as I don’t watch them, but I do have an idea, so it prob. Goes along the same kind of road when every time I see the iron bru advert, BOOM! It’s you down to a T.

Tony Donnelly is a polemicist ignore the eejit. A definite quacking duck if there ever was one.

It seems to me that you take great delight in winding people up by saying something offensive, and then pleading innocent ignorance or that it’s your opinion (to which you’re entitled) and then claiming that you’re being bullied. Do you not get enough attention at home? Maybe those who know you well ignore your pash.

If you want folk to respect your opinions, you must show them the same courtesy. Simples!

  10. Googy, Big Jock would have waded in and told supporters there are enough ways to address people and each other without using racist terms:-)

  11. Must say I had little or no interest in last night’s Champions League games but was disappointed that Munich did not annihilate Man City’s sugar daddy boys as appeared to be on the cards before they decided to take a breather and allowed City back into the game.

Neither have I much time for Manure but I like David Moyes and hope he does well. Maybe I envy teams who have a bottomless pit of money and can throw forty and fifty million pounds on a player.

Despite the way the results have gone I’m still looking forward to seeing Celtic strut their stuff in the mighty cathedral of football that is the Nou Camp to-night. A good performance from Celts will do me regardless of the result. Barcelona could beckon for big Fraser if he does well to-night.

I loved that show, and many more like it during that time, Rising Damp, Are you being served, steptoe and son, porridge, none of your politically correct stuff then, there is a platform for the political correct student mob, but it’s like the health and safety right now a wee bit OTT.

There’s a good man in Glasgow – a boy from the village – his boy came down and it didn’t work out for him – Paul67 lives near him, and dreams and expectations don’t always work out. And they’ve both back in Scotland, and I’m still here, and I’m glad I met them.

Kit is lives the ethos of the Celtic family and practices it well. He couldn’t not have done more for my son and opened his door to me and mine to share a beer

I hope to be able to reciprocate the next time he is back in Scotland but I will always be indebted to his generosity of spirit

I’m an atheist too and I was being tongue in cheek. Hey everyone live and let live. I have read some dreadful things about him though – i think search George Monbiot and the pope for info. Not very scientific I know.

I for one think we have to be very careful tonight – barca are capable of giving us our first real doing in Europe since Xamax (??)- caution advised -but also a win in the Nou camp would really help recruitment etc and be a lot of fun

  20. Judging by the display of the bare-skin shirtless brigade at the game in sub-zero weather last Friday night it looks like we now have a new breed of fans who would be more at home in the NFL watching the Green Bay Packers.

  21. @tonydonnelly

I wouldn’t lose any sleep over your spat with others posters

Different terms in different parts this planet have a variety of different meanings. Take our own support for example we are quite happy to be marching with a particular band of St Patrick or being part of the famed army of Paddy McCourt jeez some of us are even known to shed a tear when belting out Glory O Glory O to this type of man. Sometimes the term is even used as a term of endearment when describing a fellow supporter. But woe betide anyone of an opposing view or an allegiance to any other European club using i ,cue shock horror indignation and letters of protest to UEFA and big Peter. Or maybe it was the the word bar stewards that offended them.

That’s your opinion of me so be it, I don’t know you, you don’t know me, if my post winds you up scroll past mate, that you making your mark in the keyboard hard men in here, that’s my opinion of you, I hope it’s accepted they way I accepted yours, scroll past and enjoy the good things people post about the GB. Par for the course in here with posts aiming at me.

  23. Burgas-agree re Lustig, being selfish ,if he is out for a couple of months and has also missed out on the World Cup,he will stay under the radar of other clubs and sign a new deal.

I do not know anyone of your name, to the best of my knowledge but I have friends who know you and say you are not as bad as you are coming across on here.

You claim to be a straight talker but your apology was anything but straight. You are scathing to others but excuse yourself when you get it wrong.

I too remember the 70s and I sang the song about Paul Wilson and probably some worse stuff.

The difference is that I regret that and do not want to see it back. I see the errors in my past. You are talking of those as better days when you did not have to kow tow to students :-)

As if you ever kowtowed to anyone apart from the Celtic Board.

All my posts from here on will be about tonight’s game

  25. Mick1888- those banned were the people who bought tickets for the game- and even those who made it to the game might well have moved away from that area- what they were banned for was for buying tickets for that area- is that justice?

I have a really good gag to go with that, but kids read the blog.

Starting to look forward to the game now, been feeling a bit low key about the game, we’re already out, done well getting there though, and after events on Friday.

Good to get back to football, and a big game too.

  28. They are getting a bit like the Mormons now, the atheists.
