CELTIC have been told they will have to pay £250,000 if they hope to sign Dundee United winger Gary Mackay-Steven this month.

Reports indicate contact has already been made to the Tannadice club to land the player on a pre-contract deal which would see him switch to Parkhead in the summer for free.

The 24-year-old is also interesting League One outfit Sheffield United who have already had an offer of £100,000 knocked back.

Celtic No2 John Collins was reluctant to be drawn too much on the situation, but admitted Mackay-Steven has attributes that appeal.

He said: “He’s a good football player. He’s got pace, he’s skilful, but he’s a Dundee United player.

“We’re looking for speed in the wider areas and at the top of the pitch.

“It’s very important and if we can find that it would obviously be very good for us.’
