5 games in December, 5 poor results to avenge

833

Celtic have five games still to play this month against teams they have recorded two draws, three defeats and no wins against this season.  Hearts and Rangers conformably recorded home wins against Celtic while St Johnstone won at Celtic Park.  Udinese were fortunate to escape Glasgow with a point thanks to a late penalty, while Kilmarnock demonstrated their unpredictability by taking, then losing, a three goal lead.

There was a bit of optimistic chat over the weekend that three of our next four league games are at home but these are the teams we need to beat to win the league.  If Celtic come through this month unscathed in domestic football they will win the league, but despite current good form, this will be a huge challenge, starting against Hearts at 15:00 on Saturday.

I asked last night if any of you new John logue who went to St Pats round about that time

    ———————————————————————————————————-

There was a guy called Logue in my class at St Pats, can’t remember his first name or much more about him other than he was very studious, he came from Whitecrook and could play the piano. That would be in the in the mid sixties. Other boys from Whitecrook were the McGinty brothers – and as I recall their dad managed one of the OHR boys guild football teams.

I see that The Daily News trumpets how the Udinese camp are predicting our early demise in Europe, when actually, on closer scrutiny the quotes from Italy reveal lazy and biased journalism from the author of the said article. No surprises there then…

Great to see Neil Lennon ‘bigging’ up Dan McStorovic, great piece on media manipulation in two ways. It acknowledges a great team-player and it sets down a marker in readiness for any possible attempt to undermine his footballing abilities before the Glasgow derby.

  6. I see from this morning’s Herald that Celtic escaped punishment from something that they didn’t stand charged with.Yesterday The Scotsman carried similar headlines.Coincidence?

This from the Daily Telegraph blog of James MacMillan the composer………………………………………………..

“Why modern, tolerant Scotland is still disfigured by sectarian bigotry

By James MacMillan Last updated: December 5th, 2011

The Scottish Crown Office has admitted that it has destroyed crucial data which legal insiders claim would show that the vast majority of sectarian crimes in Scotland have been committed against Roman Catholics.

The publication of these key statistics, promised by First Minister Alex Salmond, would have provided invaluable pointers for legislators in tackling the problem of sectarianism north of the border.

However, many here are suspicious that the SNP administration, the Police and fiscal services are embarrassed and annoyed that the evidence points to Scotland’s sectarian problems being specifically anti-Catholicism.

This does not fit with the Nationalists’ rosy propaganda about a fine wee country being totally at ease with itself and lacking the kind of community tensions in which those nasty racist Sassenachs indulge. The Police, on the other hand, dominated by Glaswegians annoyed at uppity Catholics complaining all the time, are felt to have their own agendas on ‘anti-sectarian’ initiatives.

The Scottish press are also ‘coy’ about reporting this as it goes against their idea that there is no significant anti-Catholicism in Scotland etc, etc.

Meanwhile the attacks on Scottish Catholic churches continue, relatively under-reported in the media north and south of the border.

Are Catholic churches in England vandalised and burnt? No. Not even during the whipped-up anti-Pope hysteria last year. Are Catholic churches in Northern Ireland attacked and burnt? Yes. Quite regularly.

But they have endured decades of near-civil war over the religious and political divides. Are Catholic churches in Scotland attacked and burnt? Yes.

But we are supposed to be a modern, tolerant country – “the best wee country in the world” according to one of the Scottish government’s relentless, self-congratulatory, Pravda-style publicity campaigns. This was brought to my attention this morning.

In this report on the vandalisation of St Leonard’s RC Church in East Kilbride certain details have been withheld. According to parish sources the vandals removed the statue of Our Lady and placed it on the altar where they covered it in paper and cloth and set it alight. Also, the Tabernacle – one of the most sacred objects in any Catholic Church was covered in graffiti.

This was clearly a sectarian attack, motivated by the intense anti-Catholic attitudes which have so disfigured Scotland and continues to do so. The fact that a police spokesman, in full knowledge of the specific details of this assault, then claimed it bore no hallmarks of a sectarian incident, speaks volumes. This is what happens every time.”

Morning from a crisp and cold Central Scotia

    Ron Bacardi

Do you mean Kevin and Anthony McGinty?

Note the terms of the SPL statement from yesterday:

1st the say that they are satisfied that Celtic did not breach any of the SPL rules– because it is clear that the club have taken all reasonable steps to stop something that the SPL say may well have been a breach of their rules– although whether the singing or chanting was or was not is open to question

    and

2nd they then go on to say that whatever was sung or chanted ( and as yet I have still to see where that is clearly defined and explained ) was “unacceptable behaviour” whatever that is.

Again this is merely their definition of what is unacceptable– although to be fair as the league body they are free to define that within reason.

Is unacceptable behaviour like the old idea of ungentlemanly conduct?

Is out and out sectarianism “unacceptable behaviour” or is that something more serious?

Would gross inaccurate reporting of facts and circumstances by the SPL’s partner media outlets amount to unacceptable behaviour?

Can only football clubs and their fans be guilty of unacceptable behaviour within a football ground– or can the SPL rule in a similar fashion in connection with anyone else who has an interest in what occurs within a football ground?

Lastly, if anyone is needing a wee pick me up of a day, scroll back and pick out the Nigella Lawson clip from about 1am or so– it may well warm the cockles of your heart— or even just your cockles!

  21. DUNFERMLINE chief John Yorkston has pleaded with the SFA to go easy on Sone Aluko – so the Rangers star can run riot against the Pars’ relegation rivals.

Yorkston insists Aluko did dive to win his side a crucial spot-kick in their 2-1 win over the East End Park outfit on Saturday at Ibrox, but he wants the Nigerian to avoid a potential two-game ban.

Dunfermline chairman Yorkston said: “If Aluko does get banned it does not help us in any way.

“What it would do is help the other teams in the bottom half of the league.

“This was an occasion when the ref got it wrong.

“If the ref had seen it the other way Aluko would have been booked and would not get a ban. He should have been yellow carded and that would have been it.

“Having watched it on TV, it was never a penalty. And the player’s assertion that none of the Dunfermline lads objected to the award is also totally wrong.

“I don’t think Paul Gallacher and other guys raced over to him just to see if he had hurt himself when he fell!”

Aluko will discover today at the earliest if he is to face disciplinary action. Charges of alleged simulation can be processed using the SFA’s fast-track procedures after review by compliance officer Vincent Lunny.

If Lunny decides there is a case to answer, Aluko could be offered a two-game ban which he could accept or request a tribunal.

Meanwhile, Partick Thistle will seek talks with Rangers in a bid to extend the loan deal of Kyle Hutton.

  23. Rangers slammed for treatment of Indian trialists Sunil Chhetri & Jeje Lalpekhlua

    By Keith Jackson

    Dec 5 2011

INDIA manager Savio Medeira last night hit out at Rangers for their treatment of trialists Sunil Chhetri and Jeje Lalpekhlua.

The Indian duo were sent home after less than a week in Glasgow with both players complaining they had not been given enough time to impress boss Ally McCoist.

McCoist has stated he will monitor the pair’s progress and both played in India’s South Asian Football Federation Cup tie against Afghanistan yesterday, with Chhetri scoring for India.

But Medeira believes Rangers should have continued to scout them in India, although he reckons the trial at Murray Park will be good for the players.

He said: “It was always going to be tough because the financial conditions are poorer. It’s even poorer in Scotland and both Chhetri and Jeje will have needed some time to acclimatise to the austerity compared to India, which they didn’t get.

“Ideally, they should have asked scouts from Rangers to come down and watch them play in India.

“But I’m sure, they will come back confident get some warm food and a meal in their bellies and help inspire our team.”

She says the job of Government is not to do the easy thing but the right thing, adding: “Most people, if not everybody in Scotland, thinks the scourge of sectarianism is something we really need to shake off once and for all.”

The bill was shelved earlier this year amid a welter of criticism, but the SNP majority at Holyrood should help it become law next year.

Ms Sturgeon says legislation is not the full story and will need to be accompanied by other educational and social measures, but adds that it will send send a strong message that sectarian behaviour is not acceptable at football matches.

Elsewhere in a wide-ranging interview, the first in a series with leading Scotish politicians to be carried out by HeraldScotland, she discusses minimum alcohol pricing, the SNP’s chances at the 2012 council elections, the independence referendum issue…and whether she wants to succeed Alex Salmond as First Minister.
