8 days before we see Celtic war face

292

How many preseasons have we seen Celtic style to throw off lethargy before finding their rhythm when league business starts?

Our preparations often fell short when it came to Champions League qualification but the domestic marathon is a specialty of Celtic.

As Ange Postecoglou said, his style concern is to prepare the team to win games. He will not be remotely concerned with a result against Norwich tomorrow, instead he is likely to take risks in order to test and tax the squad.

We’ll wait another 8 days before we see Celtic’s war face. Enjoy the end of the summer strategy, whatever the score.

All the busses go up the hills, an Oransay or bar-d to get to my grannies at park farm, a Slaime for my maws hoose, least favourite a Devol and get of at the Dubby.

Favourite bus, the main road to Glasgow via Kilmacolm, shortest journey up the clune brae and in the hoose in 15 minutes.

If another ULTRA gang nicks your flag, and the Legia Ultras did just that to the GB, then you have to disband, so farewell Green Brigade, por cierto

I don’t think the English Ultras that got their arses handed to them and all their banners taken off them by the Russian Ultras in Russia for the World Cup disbanded.

    Happy to be corrected.

I like a lot of what the GB bring to the games, but they need to leave all the IRA and RITG stuff for on the busses and in the pubs.

Especially if we’re trying to appeal to a wider/worldwide audience.

Tons of great songs without all the IRA/provo stuff either being sung or added on to perfectly good songs.

Leave the bigots across the city to engage in all that nonsense and rise above it.

“My old man always said Celtic were fundamentally something which the fans could kick and moan about to make up for the inadequacy of their own lives.

Personally I think that is a wee bit harsh but it clearly performs a function for folk who need to be critical of something but who never personally would be likely to, or capable of, having any accountability for anything.”

    —————————————-

I have rarely read such utter balderdash. You have posted this nonsense before, and I did not respond. So you or or your old man believe that, for example, a Celtic fan of 60 years with 2 Masters degrees from Strathclyde and the University of Michigan, Director of a Department with 120 staff for a major U.S. City, a budget of millions of dollars, several national professional awards, and an award from yet another U.S. State for ‘Citizen of the Year’,’ only direct criticism at Celtic because their lives are inadequate and they are not accountable for anything? I know many Celtic fans with significant life achievements. They do not have a ‘need’ to be critical of anything. That is risible.

We understand that you revere your father. Understandable. Just spare us the ludicrous psychobabble. Anyone who thinks Celtic are above criticism for anything is living in la la land.

Score in Germany at half time yesterday Leipzig 0 Liverpool 1.

Klopp makes 4 HT changes, then 7 more later.

Final score: Leipzig 0 Liverpool 5.

Massive strength in depth. No second half fall off with introduction of subs. Shows what we will be up against in the CL. I really hope we avoid them.

Totes agree mate. I made the same point the other day when Man U introduced their kids v Victory and again v Palace; they looked more energetic with non-regular starters and even extended their leads.

We can sure SAY we’re only concerned about fitness in these warm-ups. But I want Celtic to have a deep enuff squad so that our 2nd eleven, 9 or 7 seamlessly slot in and give so-called inferior opponents a doing/pumping.

Making excuses about ‘bound to be disjointed’ seems disingenuous. Good that AP is talking about some more ins and outs…a few of our development prospects are 22yrs old – time to man up or move on shirley.

    Looking forward to tomorrow.

    Can’t wait for next Saturday

    Bit early with predictions perhaps?

    .. but here goes.

Based on our 93 points tally last season … which included a 3-0-3 start.

And comparing and contrasting both our recruitment and preparation this preseason and last?

I think Celtic will hit between 95 and 102 points this season.

If we reach 95 points (2.5 ppg average) – I’d put our chances of winning the league at c.60%

Extrapolating the assumption, every point over 95 increases our chances of becoming champions by c.5%

If we hit 98 or upwards? It’s in the bag.

    Simple, but not easy.

Arithmetic is sound but the assumptions are just that and nothing more.

“anybody think so far we have stood still or improved with our current squad.”

    ——————————————-

Converting loans to signings is a positive step, but by definition, hardly improves the squad.

Losing Rogic was a negative. Bernabei and Mooy are improvements, with the jury out on Moritz.

    Verdict: marginal improvement.

Main issue: we have a defense like Swiss cheese against top class sides, particularly if we have injuries to our A team.

South of the river, it looks as if the Orcs have replaced Bassey with an experienced international, and expanded their attacking options, with Matondo a definite upgrade to Diallo. Aribo is a big loss to them.

    Verdict: marginal improvement.

The League is going to be tight. VAR decisions may settle it.

  14. If anyone can actually a find a post from me that states Jamie Smith was a better player than James McFadden, I will make a substantial charity donation.

A poster that cannot read a room has now proven that they cannot read an unencrypted sentence either.

Mentioning Jamie and 2003, I can conclude that this is the time when James McFadden’s purchase is being advocated. A time when we had Hartson, Sutton and Larsson (1 more year). Nobody sane would be suggesting that McFadden would have been any better than 4th striker for the year 2003/4- accepting that he could prove better than Shaun Maloney, David Fernandez, Jamie Smith or Aidan McGeady who debuted in 2004).

Did we need to buy someone to replace (Jamie Smith) who made an average of 10 appearances as a sub most seasons he was with us. What difference would he have made in Seville when Smith was an unused sub after we already used Laursen, McNamara and Maloney.

I am quite happy to cede that James McFadden had a better career than Jamie Smith in the same way that Steven Fletcher had a better career than Cillian Sheridan.

Point is that all 4 were inadequate for our needs as their careers showed. The fact that we made bad buys in the past does not advance the case for buying McFadden; it would just have added to other duds like Fernandez, Carlton Cole, Pawel Brozek, and a few variants of the Camera spelling plus Nouioui (who at least gave us a chant based on The Kingsmen single).

McFadden is not as much of a dud as say Lawrence Shankland or Stevie May, who were also touted for Celtic but he would still have disappointed.

In 2004 he could not lace the boots of Henrik, Chris or John and he was not provably better than Shaun Maloney

In 2005 he was not better than Dion Dublin or Zurawski but was better than Aliadiere and Beattie and could have been a rarely used sub like them.

In 2006 he was not better than Zurawski or JVOH or Nakamura or McGeady as a winger

In 2007 he had less ability than Zurawski JVOH, Samaras, Riordan, McDonald and Nakamura/McGeady. He could have played tas much of a role as Killen or Mizuno

By 2008- he was already a myth and only an alcoholic manager would have spent money for him to play 82 games with 13 goals for a team yo-yoing between Championship and a team that finished 19th, 9th and 18th in the EPL before sending him back to Everton

  15. I think we will be stronger than last season. Whether sevco will be stronger remains to be seen. Time will tell. I think the league is too close to call. The games against sevco will be crucial. The huge advantage they have, as always, will be the referees. Before a ball is kicked, we are already 10 to 12 points behind them.

More needed. Lots done. Will take a few windows to fix the squad issue. Even more to fix the succession planning one in the B team.

Shaping up to having a fine first 11 (see first half v. Blackburn and Legia).

Players 12+ needing some tender loving care to improve – Mooy & Jenz will stretch that number hopefully but folk like Uroghide (back to Belgium?), Lawal (B Team atm), Shaw (back to lower England), McCarthy (eff knows), Julien (Schalke back ?), Ajeti (Swiss ?) & Johnston (sold) need replaced….

Time to judge on 1st September as I we will be active on inomings and beyond the above, could be susceptible to losing JJ (first 11), Turnbull (12+) or possibly O’Riley (first 11) if big numbers are offered.

    ————————————————

As with any other season after a few friendlies , the answer must be a definitive …………… “Don’t know!”

Teams don’t just improve with a few bling transfers or failure to land a few bling transfers. They improve mostly by improving the players you have. We have a young-ish squad with improveability in them and a coach with a record in player improvement. Brendan Rodgers showed this when he got more of a song out of Ronny Deila’s team than he did from the players he brought to the club. Ange, admittedly has mostly improved us through his additions, in contrast.

The same players can be better, worse or just the same standard they were last season but you will never detect this through observation of 4 or 5 friendlies or a similar handful of league matches.

There is absolutely no correlation between our pre-season successes and our subsequent competitive achievements. We began the Seville season with a defeat to Basel.

I have no idea how good or bad Sevco will be relative to us and neither does anyone else on here.

We could be improved and still not good enough to win if their improvement is greater than ours. We have to have the patience to let the growth take place, then judge if it is fast enough. All over the world , fans call early for “failing” clubs to change “failing” players and “failing” managers even though we know that clubs that do this regularly are less successful than those with greater stability. Occasionally, the early callers can be proven right. More often than are proved wrong- just read any Celtic match day thread on here- the early stages are full of dire predictions and early predictions of inadequate playing levels. They usually last until Celtic score but most often, it takes a gap of two or more goals for the angst to subside.

I won’t be calling this league for quite some time yet.

JMcF not good enough — a number of scenarios were put forward?

Would he not have been good enough to have improved our bench in Seville?

    A bench that included a certain JS / winger / No.39 repeat No. 39.
