8 days before we see Celtic war face

292

How many preseasons have we seen Celtic style to throw off lethargy before finding their rhythm when league business starts?

Our preparations often fell short when it came to Champions League qualification but the domestic marathon is a specialty of Celtic.

As Ange Postecoglou said, his style concern is to prepare the team to win games. He will not be remotely concerned with a result against Norwich tomorrow, instead he is likely to take risks in order to test and tax the squad.

We’ll wait another 8 days before we see Celtic’s war face. Enjoy the end of the summer strategy, whatever the score.

  1. Good morning from a bright Talacre – showers forecast later.

I would hope Ange would give our Aberdeen starting xi a good run out today. Need to get 90 mins – but what do I know..

  2. Certainly a few years back you would expect our first eleven to start and play for at least an hour,

So many changes in Sports Science now hard to anticipate what the plan will be,

Sometimes your are actually wasting your time , as some like to bury their heads.

  4. Here’s hoping Teemu Pukki plays today like he used to play for us :)

Doubt we’ll see Mooy today, he said he has done very little actual football training recently .

As it is still time for a bit of experimenting, it would be nice to see two start up front ( GG and Kyogo) with Jota as the winger. That would take me back to the days of 433, with the likes of Charlie, McGarvey and Provan.

  5. St. Tams, last year I read hundreds of Posts on CQN & Sentinel Celts telling me we hadn’t a hope of winning the League.

Huns had League wrapped up, they had automatic Group Stage Champions League place, worth 40 Million and were going to dominate us for next 10 years,

Well you know what it didn’t happen,

Luckily I can’t remember if you or Iniquitous were on the doomsayers bandwagon last year but ye will know that yourselves.

Last year is done and we are on the verge of a new Season, some Celtic Supporters myself included feel confident of another good Season others are fearful that the Huns buying spree will tilt the balance in their favour,

Both of those views are perfectly valid, I totally understand that playing Ange Ball in Europe is high risk and we could ship a few tankings, I hope not but overall I have no great hopes for European progression this year anyhow.

If you are a Celtic Optimist, if you believe that our team is evolving and we will be better this year than last year, if you believe pre season results are meaningless , if you believe we will win our first 5 League games and will go into first Derby at Celtic Park at the very least level if not ahead of the Hun, that is a totally valid expectation and in no way entails burying your head in the sand.

As it’s our last gemme before the season starts in earnest…am hoping Ange plays our strongest available 11 for at least 60 mins…gonna say it…although it’s a nothing preseason game….we’re gonna blow the Canary lights out ;-))

Expect to see a side very close to the that which will start verse Aberdeen. With GG on paternity leave, looks like AP might go with Kyogo as the main striker to start the league campaign.

He always makes room for Maeda and Jota is a first pick in any of AP’s best sides. Callum will resume as DM Juranovic and Taylor as wing back / inverted backs, we don’t play with full backs, and the signing of wing back Bernabei continues AP’s system. Joe Hart won’t be playing ‘backsie’ in either by the time Aberdeen arrive in Glasgow next week.

No news on Carl Starfelt’s progress to fitness I reckon AP will be happy with Stephen Welsh’s promotion and game time, forging a partnership with CCV. Experiments if there are any more also finish today, regardless of who else we’ll sign in the next six weeks.

  8. Lots of talk about results in preseason friendly games, there value is in the title, friendly, non-comeptitive football. Results mean nothing hence the reason whole teams get swapped at half time etc.

Some folk love to talk trash about celtic’s lack of transfers and our weaknesses and then focus on secvo’s appearent strengths and improvements and vic versa.

My on view is we have added some depth to the squad which should make it more robust. A couple of the players added have every chance of becoming 1ßt team regulars.

We should be stronger than last season based on the fact we have a settled team that is young and should continue to improve in a system they are now more familiar with. We are also still in the market to add more players.

I could not tell you anything about sevco’s preseason results or much about the quality of their new signings. However, sevco alway seem to get a lot of hype compared to other teams when they sign players so it’s actually hard to judge them until you see them in action. In contrast celtic signing almost always come across as somewhat underwhelming by comparison.

By the end of the season we will know for sure. Right know its all talk.

I had a chat wae a mate last week about expectations….last season we had nothing but hope, and it was beyond expectation…this season, I think, based on that, our expectations this season may be over-inflated…So a Quad invincible season isn’t out of the realms of possibility ;-))

  10. My only fear about today is that big Joe Hart will get caught offside….

  12. This time last week I was mixing with the “fat cats” courtesy of a very good friend who was kind enough to give his tickets for the No.7 restaurant to me and my son. Didn’t see any fat cats it was mostly your average Celtic fan given a chance to put on a suit or a lovely summer dress and having a great time.

I was reminded of Whitedoghunch who used to post on here, hope he’s well as I haven’t seen his name in a while. He used to slaughter the catering at Celtic Park, always made me laugh, as on the half a dozen occasions I’ve been as a guest it’s been fantastic.

Thought we played well enough in the first half and miles ahead of this time last year so in that instance we have improved. I am confident we will continue to improve. I also expect us to struggle in our CL games especially if we get a couple of elite teams, so will sevco if they make it that far. I’ve said on here that I like defensive football but not for Celtic, it’s not what we want and it’s not what Ange wants. It will be a rollercoaster so strap yourself in, we’re not signing a DM and it won’t make a difference if we do.

  13. Huge thanks to Almore via An Tearmann…will get yer tickiet back to u ASAP…txt u later D, thanks all again

All 3 posts summarise bits of my own thoughts.

Hopefully we do put our strongest side out for at least an hour today in our final rehearsal.

We have 5 weeks to sort out how any new blood fits in pre Europe.

For now the task is to play our way and win the first 4 league games. That won’t be easy as Killie and Ross Co away are bookended by Aberdeen and Hearts. Hitting the ground running with no complacency for these 4 will be key. Easing in the new guys as they get fitter and acclimatised at the end of games where we maybe in ascendancy this next month would be icing on the cake.

If we get to the CL group draw a week before the first game vs the Govan mob, unbeaten, we might well be in a better place than them on 2 fronts.

Emeraldbee put forward the case for consistency of squad vs chopping and changing from his Times article. If the theory is correct then the early CL group games this year plus our rivals loss of 2 key players and mass influx can only help us.

Of course some will prefer to wallow in negativity. That’s fine for them too.

  15. “Starfelt got off to a shaky start to become one of the top performers”

Chris Sutton would seem to have a different view from that of many CQNers :-))

Sorry. I was getting you mixed up with STEBHOY who, I think it is fair to say, has a less positive view of Celtic.

  20. So, for those of us luck enough to see todays game if anyone fancies taking part in a Trial Run for the POTY thing I’d be pleased to collate the results.

So, in short, watch today’s game, decide which 3 players impress you most, then stick the 3 names in an email to SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM

Today’s scores won’t count towards the actual competition. Just a pre-competotion friendly to check everything works.

    Hail Hail

  21. Iniquitous,

I think you are being deliberately obtuse.Moyes stated in his interview that his team were slow physically and mentally.Their speed of thought was not there, but they will improve. As a result of this, their opponents were faster, and his team found it hard to compete. The first half was a slog fest,as I have said.No speed at all anywhere on the pitch. No shots from them at all.Two quick goals against a team not really up for it will put a spring in any teams performance, and W Ham went from bad to worse.

Funny the only thing you quote,is the headline from the Media, not anything else in Moyes interview.

    The headline you never saw.

Like a few others you seem to be putting far too much importance into pre season games.Ange said he does not,so why do you?.I don’t have my head in the sand,at the moment,I know how good we will be,I have no idea about them,so I will wait and see.
