A case to answer for SFA and Celtic

1175

Referee Steven McLean saw the incident when Josh Meekings stopped a Leigh Griffiths header crossing the line with his hand.  He was 12 yards away with an unobstructed view.  The blame for getting the decision wrong is entirely his.

We can only speculate as to why he didn’t award a penalty.  At best, McLean didn’t believe the evidence of his own eyes and passed the buck to his assistant Alan Muir, who was around 6 yards from the action but with a less-clear view.

Muir did not see Meekings clear the ball legally.  If he was distracted, and failed to see what happened clearly enough, he should have informed the referee.  If Muir told the referee anything else, this is also a failing.

The SFA have a case to answer. Not fit and proper, to use their parlance.

Notwithstanding the fact that if the rules of the game were followed Celtic would be in the cup final right now, they are out because they failed to deal appropriately with the known qualities of Inverness.

Three goals were lost, all of which were defensive mistakes.  A break downfield which caught the defence cold, a cross from the right which was not properly contested with all defenders in position, and a failure to match a back post run (similar to a recent League Cup final goal conceded to Kilmarnock).  Fatigue may have contributed to the final goal but being down to 10 men was not a contributing factor for the first two.

The game should have been won in the first half but we opened the second period off-pace.

Another matter which should be on the agenda at Lennonxtown today is why didn’t we have the right studs on?

It should be someone’s job to make a decision after the team arrives at a ground on which studs to wear.  If the decision was made, the decision was wrong.  If this process was not followed, it should have been.  Either way there is also a case to answer internally.

i agree that it was a penalty for sure, i havent heard or seen anyone dispute that

however 1-0 up against a team of minnows and then conceding three goals isnt brilliant

a lot of folk talking about 2-0 and against 10 men, I guess that means we would have scored the penalty kick

herbo-Izzy hesitated and should have retreated, but dived in.Matthews is weak as water and our poorest defender, caught out of position constantly, watch him at the 3rd goal.Efe gets a lot of unwarranted stick on here, mainly when he tries to play out of defence, but is 10 times the defender Matthews is.HH

CV-Shoonsky- The cheating yesterday has cost the Club a lot of money(not for the first time……), they should be asking for a full explanation from all involved, what they seen and what was said between them.HH

apart from the cheating yesterday i think the players are feeling the effects of a lot of games so far this season.they started in the qualifiers then had a reprieve and had another two games then had six games in the europa league and had at least three or four games in the league cup and the 31 games in the league.that is a lot of football for any team and

i wouldnt imagine many teams have played that many.

tomorrow nights game is now a must win because if they were to lose shortbread n clyde would go into overdrive with the title is back on mince.

shortbread especially would be ejaculating into their highland breechs.

Took some time to cool down…. so havent posted since the game… but my feelings haven’t changed ….

Poor old Tony Mowbray was pilloried for ‘taking it on the chin’ … but, that was nothing like we have seen of late.

Just this week alone, Sevco had a game rearranged to benefit them (which was only cancelled after other teams spoke out), we played a make up game before the semi (while ICT did not), and then there was ‘the penalty’ (which wasn’t given, and which would have, in all likelihood, ended the game as a contest)…..

Yet, the silence from Celtic is deafening …..

It seems pretty safe that those who run Scottish tootball have an agenda that is pro-sevco, and seemingly, anti-Celtic fans ….

….. if those running Celtic don’t come out and say something, then it certainly looks like Celtic (or at least those who are presently running Celtic) are, indeed, part of the SFA/SPFL inner circle (as the information about the 5 way agreement already suggests), and are more concerned with their own positions and bonuses, than doing what is right. If that is the case, then the game in Scotland is a bogey, and not worthy of my time or money …

Clearly, the fans are upset, and many of us are feeling increasingly distanced from the club ….. this weekend, and the club’s silence on it has not helped matters…. if the club doesn’t know, or care, how upset the fans are, and isn’t prepared to say or do anything to even address or even recognize those concerns, it tells me that those running Celtic simply don’t care …. as long, of course, as we pay for our ST or CelticTV …..

Really cant believe that it has gotten to this position. It wouldn’t take much from the Club to appease me, and those like me…. and good people (including those on CQN who have tried to get Resolution 12 dealt with) have done most of the work for them… Celtic only need to take its head out the sand, and say ‘something is wrong here’….

If the people running Celtic dont do even that, then that tells me they are only interested in their cosy positions and their bonus cheques ….

So, I will wait for the end of the season, and see if Celtic show the slightest sliver of principle and integrity …. if not, I will consider whether Celtic is sitll (i) the Club I have grown up knowing, and (ii) the sort of club with which I would care to be associated going forward.

It may be time to cancel my subscription to Celtic TV. It may not seem like much, but the loss for me would be huge. However, increasingly, the joy I get from watching the bhoys is tempered by all the crap … I often end up feeling more angry than anything … and what upsets me more than ‘their’ cheating is the apparent acceptance of it by my club ….

Celtic’s acquiesence to the cheating seems unseemly and unworthy of its history and its fans …. if this is what Celtic has become – a company more concerned with profit than principle – I must question whether Celtic PLC is still worthy of (i) calling itself Celtic, and/or (ii) my support.

Sad that it has come to this.

The club will say very little and get even less back. The SFA are working on the correct narrative as we speak. Distribution to all major Scottish media outlets in time for the evening bulletin is imminent.

I find our silence and lack of direction on almost every major issue concerning the club really frustrating. The fans will stand behind the boards decision, what are they afraid of?

It is indeed sad, that our board cannot support the manager, players, and fans.

    Its way beyond a joke.

In the last few weeks, first we had the Craig Thompson Show against Dundee Utd, now we have a semi-final where we are blatantly cheated by the referee and his minions.

If nothing is said by PL and the board about these honest mistakes, I will be keeping my money in my pocket, I am not paying to watch Celtic be cheated.

  16. The question is what do we as a Support do. This blog is influential so ideas that emanate from here can translate into action. The main message that we need to get across is that we accept that Refs will inevitably get decisions wrong and we are not looking for preferential treatment. However we have been the victims of an astonishing number of bad calls in vital games over the years and we are no longer prepared to tolerate this discrimination.

Refs need to know that if they blatantly cheat us, there will be consequences. We should call on the SFA for an explanation, we should highlight the Referee with banners in future games and ultimately as a Support, boycott competitions.

  21. Just spoken to another mhan who has been following the Celtic for the best part of 70 years. He reckons that yesterday was the worst ever he had seen. And that takes some doing, as he said, given what went on in the 40s and 50s.

To me, I think yesterday was the last straw. Scottish football will not let us flourish EVER. We need to get out (and I know that is a lot easier said than done) but we cannot be complicit in being cheated.

You may recall that CQN’ers got together at the start of the year to crowd fund the Statement from Celtic Supporters which appeared in the Sunday Herald on 25th January.

There is another statement planned and this is scheduled to appear in Sunday Herald very soon. It is at the stage where their lawyers are looking at the proposed text and will no doubt refer it for clearance from the advertising standards guys.

The target this time is the SFA.

This Statement is NOT from a group of Celtic supporters – as was the case in January. Indeed Livibhoy posted a link earlier to Hearts fans discussing the subject matter.

The same club myth, the remarkable decision from LNS, the fact that Ogilvie remains in charge, Doncaster’s proposed fixture bias last week and the blatant penalty denial yesterday are all linked.

We need to keep at them to expose this and we need to come at it from all angles.

This time the funding has NOT come from this site. Others saw what we achieved and this inspired them to mobilize. We have simply helped.

Let’s hope it can achieve the same exposure as the Statement from Celtic Supporters managed.

I must take a break from all this, the anger I feel at being cheated consistently throughout the years has led me to blaming every Tim who goes to games away and at hampden,I know it’s very unfair perhaps even short sighted but to me just don’t give anybody else your money, get together through the Trust and Association,it’s the only way of making a difference, give only Celtic your money and nobody else.

  25. I don’t like what this in your face blatant cheating does to me as a person. I lost the plot spectacularly yesterday shouting and bawling at the tele like a loony.

Guess what he never committed another after that, shock horror. When we see examples every week of Celtic players getting booked for their first foul. Those were the ones that were given he also committed lots that the mib ignored.

Celtic are in an awkward place here.I’ve no doubt they would like to shout “We were cheated” from the rooftops but will go with discretion being the better part of valour. The media would love us as a club to make an issue of this. We’d be derided, old players would be dragged out to tell us that we’re wrong.Stories would emerge about officials families receiving death threats and kids having a hard time at school.Referees would threaten strike action and it would all be laid at the door of Celtic.

Celtic will need to bide their time and wait until members of the SFA make mistakes then go for them.

The fans could, if we make a semi final next year, take the decision not to turn up,although this would split us with many deciding to go.I believe a semi final against say a Dundee Utd with the Celtic fans staying away or even outside would be troublesome for the SFA but would probably achieve nothing.

One thing we have lost since NFL playing days is someone who’s constantly in the refs face.We have Broony but I don’t think he’s as good as Lennon was.Get at these guys and give them a hard time.
