A number 10

936

A journalist friend in Norway tells me Jo Inge Berget is a traditional no. 10, not a striker. We need both. Kris Commons fills the creative roll almost exclusively, we need someone to share the burden, but we still need a strong, penalty box striker, who can stand up to the pressures of Champions League football.

Best of luck to Tony Watt, best of luck to Standard too, who I hear have put a lot of skin in his contract. Belgium should give him a better chance of fulfilling his potential than anywhere in the UK. It’s head down and work hard time.

  1. Just checked and have 2 survey forms but I usually get two e mails offering this n that.

There are either multiple records on one database or multiple databases, not sure which but as an ex IT man I’d love to eradicate duplication.

One way to do so is allocate a unique Membership number so that even if an e mail address changes there is only one record.

It’s probably not as bad as the old Premium Bond paper system where your “account” might be all over the place depending on any change in spelling your name.

When that was computerised in the early 70s folk got issued a Holding Number under which all bonds were gathered in and held.

Not a lot of people know that.

Jobo – scots girl marginally impeded, stewards enquiry, placings remain unaltered, interference unintentional

We would indeed be far more likely to improve our co-efficient with a EL run.

What’ this ” striker ” you speak of mate ? :(

Whilst hoping for CL games I can see benefit if we play and stay in the EL after Christmas.

It was in the EL that Celtic developed to become a last 16 CL club the following year.

Ajax who have a similar develop and sell model but with harder domestic opposition than we do constantly yo yo between CL and EL.

  7. My team for tomorrow would be more offensive(the one above has 6 defenders)

    Forster

    Lustig Ambrose VVD Izzy

    McGregor Johansen Mulgrew Derk

    Commons

    Pukki

The team should defend as a team and have attacking options to get an away goal.

I have watched Celtic teams over the years play CHs in midfield and lose 1 or 2 to nil.

What you need is the ability to break and win 2-1 or draw 2-2.

    Go for it Bhoys!!!

That is a great point. Celtic have done extremely well in recent years with the sustainable model. Ajax were no better than us last year.

All Euro footie is great and I love being there for any Euro game

mind that European idea I emailed you about last year. It is still ongoing and I’m not letting it drop until I get a proper response. I may need some advice, and if so, do you mind if I email you via Paul67 as I want to keep this offline.

Alfredo’s in West Nile Street used to be the Celtic Pools shop. Just round the corner from the office of the first with Desmond in his name to be in charge of Celtic.

Jobo, will we be getting weather reports from Menorca?

A guy I work with is just back from another Balearic island, Mallorca, and said it was roastin.

Going by the BBC’s weather forecast, the rest of this week’s weather here won’t be as good as that of last week.

Have a great holiday and hopefully it get’s off to a good start by us getting a result tomorrow night

Been concentrating on enjoying the Games, but tomorrow night BACK TO THE BHOYS IN GREEN AND WHITE ON CELTIC TV….

  13. I got the feeling at murrayfield that Celtic were in 2nd gear most of the game. I can only really judge properly when I see the team in the flesh. The game for the most part was played like a pre-season friendly. Ronny has the element of surprise this season. From what I have read about him he appears to be a student of the game and will not have showed his full hand yet. We will have a different style of play and over the last few games numerous players have had a chance to show what they can do. I expect Ronny now knows what his best 11 is, who is staying and is part of the first 11 and who may be surplus to requirements. Celtic have been conditioned to hit full speed possibly not tomorrow but certainly when we reach the home leg. I expect Celtic to play a bit cagey tomorrow and possibly secure a draw or nick a slender win. It is certainly interesting because we are not sure of what the line up will be. I fully expect the new Norwegian Bhoy to get a part of the game and again just from what I have read and with our lack of wingers I would wager he would start wide. I could of course be completely wrong but to me it looks like Ronny has taken his time to assess the squad and has brought in one player who he believes can help the side get past Legia before possibly shuffling the squad again letting players go and maybe bringing in another player or two. I expect Celtic to get the result over 2 legs but it is not an easy tie. I would be happy with a score draw in Poland. Anything better than a score draw is a bonus. Hopefully we get the result we are looking for and get past Legia and get back to Paradise which is like a goal of a start for us in European football.

  14. Celtic actually have a really strong starting 11 when you compare it to other teams at this level, then throw in the few injured players who are starters and we get stronger.

    I’m confident we’ll get through.

  15. Feels like we are light up front for tomorrow. I am sure we will go with a lone striker but who will it be? Commons is needed in midfield. Neither Stokes or Griffiths have really shown they have the experience to play that role especially in the CL, and Pukki is not an out and out striker. Sammi got a club yet ? :)

    My team would be:

    Forster

    Lustig Ambrose VVD Izzy

    Mathews Johansen Mulgrew Commons Henderson

    Pukki

It’s a solid enough team for an away game in CL, but really lacking firepower going forward. Hendersen and Mathews will give us a lot of energy out wide with Charlie and Johansen playing a holding role in the middle. I think we will come away with a good result

  16. Sorry for the flurry of posts but:

On the striker debate, I think modern tactics and set up of teams restricts the ability to score 20 plus a year.

In the EPL, 20 plus strikers seem to be fast, bags of tricks and direct. High tempo suits them

In their Championship, the defenders are much lower quality and old school strikers can excel.

In SPL, most teams defend in depth against Celtic so an EPL style striker struggles. An old fashioned striker may do the business at Motherwell but may look a dud to the support at CP and in Europe

    It is a dilemma.

Guys like Scott McDonald sat in the grey area perfectly. A robust chancer in the mud to sneak a goal but just enough skill to do it in Europe.

On the current crop, i think Griffiths has the best combo

Stokes lacks the graft or the impact to excel in either sphere

Pukki is better suited to europe or england. He is leaning how to live in the mud

I think he will get there.

Balde is the wrong fit i’m afraid

Derk has the pace and direct approach to be a smasher. Not had a chance yet

    PS

I thought Stuart Slater was great

Just filled in the survey, the last question, what would make match day experience better

“More bars and entertainment. Support by the board for resolution 12. Less aggressive stewarding and policing.”

Good interview on Celtic tv free view.

Play Griffiths through the middle tomorrow!

  21. Kikinthenakas, also just filled in the survey, and used those points, a few more such as, if ever we play the team that plays in blue from Ibrox, make sure we see this as a new rival.

Pointed out, perhaps, Celtic could mention to the Police and Stewards could remember that those attending are paying customers, and deserve to be treated as such rather than potential criminals.
