A very personal Celtic

629

After I mentioned the Overseas Season Ticket holders last week, Auldheid (an overseas supporter) pulled some thoughts together on what his relationship with our club is all about.  Here it is, well worth kicking back for five minutes and reading:

“The phrase “BeCeltic” intrigued me somewhat as we all have different ideas of what that might mean. For me there is something about being a Celtic supporter that goes way beyond football. Every Celtic supporter everywhere feels it to some degree or other and every Celtic supporter demonstrates it to some degree or other according to their circumstances and their life experience.

You meet a stranger in a pub and if he is a fellow Tim he is no longer a stranger. If he is a fellow CQNer he was already your pal even though you had never met before. This feeling of belonging to something greater than self… it ranges from a distant almost spiritual connection to the club and what it stands for, to attendance with fellow supporters at every game the team plays, home and away.

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to BeCeltic (as I saw it) last season when I signed up for an Overseas Season Ticket.  You can read more about the genesis (and CQN’s part in it) here on Celtic Underground.

The concept on which the OST is based for me anyway reflects the Celtic ethos which manifests itself in the way we support not only the team but each other both in the official charitable work carried out by the Celtic Foundation and as everyday supporters doing mad stuff like a huddle on top of Ben Nevis for heavens sake!!! In support of our own deserving causes, like the Kano Foundation, which is but just one great example of the caring heart of the support.

The impact such work can have on people’s lives can never be fully appreciated until you meet someone, as I did whilst sitting outside a pub in Spain,  overwhelmed by the difference it made to their wellbeing.

Buying an Overseas Season Ticket was almost an act of faith in that I did not know if I had internet connectivity at my Spanish destination to watch Celtic TV. Initially I did not, but “God works” etc and a charitable neighbour gave me WiFi access that enabled me to watch ALL games home and away on TV, via connecting HDMI cable to the laptop, from the comfort of my flat overlooking the beach. (Hence the term life is a beach).

Even better, I had the option of watching games not televised by Sky or ESPN in local bars via WiFi on my mobile phone if the wife dragged me out for lunch in game time. (Bad stuff happens to good guys too you know).

Not all performances were great but both 4-3 victories over Aberdeen and Dundee Utd in the Scottish Cup were truly memorable. Luckily I returned home in time to attend the title winning game v ICT using one of my 4 OST match day tickets, which this season has become FIVE along with a £50 price reduction.

I was also very pleased to get a letter from the Celtic Foundation saying that my seat had been used in my absence by local organisations and as a Calton man I was delighted to see folk from organisations in my old stomping ground amongst the beneficiaries.

Personally I see last season’s OST initiative as simply another indication, along with the recent appointment of a Supporter Liaison and Service Officer, that progress is being made in an ongoing process of bringing the Celtic support even closer together using the wonderful communication tools we now have. I find that something to be excited about as a force for spreading good in a world where ethics (which is derived from ethos) seem to have been forgotten.

But lofty thoughts apart J : At  a very practical level the OST is a very good value for money way, especially at £250 for a Season Ticket with the ability to view all games on Celtic TV and attend up to five games when at home, given due notice, of not only being a Celtic supporter but of sharing the load of supporting Celtic across the full spectrum of the support wherever we are. From the Auldheids with grey or no hair to the younger gentlemen with too much and the Celtic ladies of all ages whom I find are even more passionate in their support (if you met my sister you would know what I mean).

So I have already renewed and if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford as well as able to make full or partial use of an OST, I would encourage you to do so via BeCeltic overseas season ticket.”

With fans like Auldheid, we’re in good hands. Trying hard to insist I’m not worried about preseason games……

  2. hopefully we’ll have another 60 + game season.

if so our most promising young players should get between 10 and 15 games a season in the league, cup competitions.

our young players will get experience and a chance, some will take it others wont, but we need to create a gateway into the first team and we need to give them a good chance to show what they have in the same way we give players brought in a chance to settle.

  3. Great article – has really lifted my mood today. I recently moved to Woking (do I qualify for an OST???) and have felt a little out of touch with all things Celtic, but reading Auldheid’s words has made me remember that you’re never far from another member of the Celtic family no matter where you are! Can’t wait for the Brentford game now. Finally an away game I won’t travel far to!

  4. Obviously there is panic in the Celtic camp about the friendly results…

    Beram Kayal @beramangela

Pre season is finished today. It was great 2 weeks the bhoys worked very hard. Looking forward to the game next week.

  5. Oglach,

I would be massively disappointed if Neil only got another 3m for new players!!

I’ve said it a couple of times on here that our half year financial result (6 month result to end of December 2012) was a profit of 14.92m. Now some of this would have been used up in the second half of the season….but I would say at an absolute maximum it would have been reduced to 10m.

We have since spent 4.5m on players and probably another 4m or so on ground improvements and season ticket reductions. That would leave us with 2m in the bank. I think this is worst case scenario and we probably have more!!

So now we sell Hooper and Wanyama and bring in another 17m. That would mean we have around 19m left. Surely at least 7-8m of this should go to Lennon for squad improvements and the remaining 10-12m kept for the club.

  6. If Hooper goes then we need a replacement fast

Don’t know what has happened to Watt but something is amiss with his lack of playing time in the last year.

    What has happened to Twardzik?

Our over cautious playing style means we need a penalty box predator and not a project.

Personally I think we are poorly coached and fear for this season.

Coaches one dimensional/ponderous style has been rumbled and he does not seem to have a plan B. .Hope I am wrong.

Everyone knows we need creativity in the midfield but our system is not designed for this.

Even a world class creative midfielder would struggle with the lack of off the ball movement that would reduce his options to the sideways or backwards pass.

  7. Ah am waiting fur the Ither Boot tae Fae.

Aye… Ah am reckoning .. Fraser, is Not fur the Long Term..

  8. Actually has anyone seen anywhere the envisaged cost of the celtic triangle development?? I remember reading the club statement at the time but can’t remember how much they said it would cost (I’m sure if this was ever revealed) . Would anyone even have a ballpark figure? 10-15m?

  9. Hooper replacement?

Give Tony Watt a chance at a sustained run in the team. If not,

    Alfred Finbogasson

    Leigh Griffiths

    Adam Le Fondre

  10. Joe Filippis Haircut on

We have to assume Celtic have ear marked the players we want to bring in but they are not going to make it known to all and sundry and will only make a statement once a deal is done.My only hope is we bring a couple of experienced players as we have enough promising youngsters.H.H.

  11. Kojo

Re FF. Big FF is the only player NL has categorically stated is not for sale. But given that that if a crazy bid of +12 mill were to be made Celtic would probably take it. +12 million is a lot of cash for a keeper even for most EPL teams

  12. fan-a-tic:

I agree a replacement for Hooper is essential, if as it looks likely he will leave. It is also essential we replace Victor. With their loss and only the signings of Virgil snd Amido ( I am not slating them as they deserve their chance) added to the poor performances in preseason I am not confident we can reach the UCL League stages. There lies in the problem as I believe our preferred targets would prefer if we were in the latter stages of the UCL. If we do not qualify I fear that our limit will be the likes of Doyle and McFadden.

On the money from Vic, some will be used yo acquire two (replacements for Vic and Gary), possibly three (backup for Izzy).

I hope and pray we qualify for the latter stages as this will determine the quality of Players we bring in, IMHO.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

At Sky it’s all about whoppers – telling them catching them or in the new Fulham owner’s case interviewing them.

  19. I have to agree with the NI politician who laid part of the blame for the trouble at the hands of the Marching Commission.

Why should the marchers be banned from marching in any area?

I mean, why put up road blocks and provoke a violent disturbance?

Much better to let them go anywhere they desire and have a full scale riot on your hands.

    Yes, much better.

    Meanwhile across the water…

It’s truly astonishing that a guy can face jail for singing a song at a football match whilst an organised march, complete with marching band, playing/singing similar songs with the specific purpose of stating GIRFUY to the Catholic community, is deemed OK, part of the nations cultural wealth.

Every one of these marches should be banned. No exceptions.

People have the right of free speech but not when the expression of that freedom is solely designed to cause offence to a large portion of the community.

EVERY official, at every level, in every organisation in the country knows exactly what these marches are truly about.

Indeed, were the marches not solely about sticking 2 fingers up to the Catholic community, they wouldn’t be taking place at all.

Can you imagine what would happen if these marchers were to take similar action with regards to the Muslim community?

It would be banned on the spot.

    Stokes has some great skill.

Unfortunately he is found wanting in game intelligence.

When his focus is on the team he can be sublime but often his selfishness and lack of awareness surfaces.

He is not a great team player but can be at times.

This lack of consistency is the reason he will never realise his potential.

with regards half yearly accounts end of dec 2012, celtic were still to receive gate and t.v cut from last 16 participation, i’d hazard a guess that’s another 6 million. no way have celtic spent 4m to improvements inside ground, maybe 1.5 million at a push. season tickets are doing a fair trade, cheaper but more bodies. So if we sell Hooper and Wanyama to bring in another 17m there should be more than 19m.

I would be surprised if the first phase of the celtic triangle cost more than 6 million tops, this is particularly the case given that construction work is cheaper when in an economic down turn. 300k to buy school and 200k to have it taken down, max 4 million to build the new building housing the superstore, ticket office and museum etc… given its essentially a shell and another 1.5 million for hard and soft landscaping.

  26. Paulosboot

Now that is what I like to see – ways in which the club and support can see the benefit to each other of engaging with each other.

My little crusade on this has been finding as many imaginative ways as possible of spreading the load of supporting the club. The OST is a start.

What has happened over the past couple of years in my opinion is a readiness to engage at a personal level that needs to be built on in capacity terms so that it becomes the way things are done.

Your suggestion is but one of many that could go through proper conduits once they become established.

In the meantime we have to work with what exists and I’ll pass it on if that is ok.

The new Support Liaison post has great potential to creating those conduits and early soundings and other indications are encouraging.

The CST have recognised the importance of this role and have formed a resolution for the AGM to further engagement. I’ll post the link later.
