  1. PLB,

” Downgraded the team”, really?.When did that happen?.I thought we brought 2 players in,one on loan, and never sold any of our stars.Maybe I wasted time on my education, and”Downgraded” does not mean what I had always taken it to mean.

I blame that bloody English tutor,Professor Lawwel.

As welcome as it gets, next seasons Champions League money isn’t the be all or end all

“Curious as to why you don’t approve of Peter Lawwells return.

Not agreeing or disagreeing on the matter but respectfully curious on your reasons.”

    —————————

I have no pronblems in stating them again.

    1) He had done his time. Like Alex Ferguson staying on at Man U, his return diminished the authority of the new CEO and others because it was the return of a figure who had drawn a lot of ire for our failure to secure 10iar. It was provocative to our fans, especially those whom he misled on Res. 12 (I give less house room to the transfer approach- as the “Where’s the Seville Money arguments never go away but they bore me).

So he was undermining the newly appointed staff by being a ghost at the feast- if they needed his advice they could get it without him being in the Boardroom. And he distracted fans by being the Official Scapegoat for all our ills. His presence prevents Mark Lawwell from being judged on his own merits too.

    2) One of the cover stories to explain his return was his familiarity with the issues and proposed compensation approach on Historical Child Abuse topics. That never convinced me. He could have given his views and expertise without being on the Current Board. He could have been paid as an arms length consulatant without being brought back to potentially undermine the new boys in post.

    3) I have no doubt that if PL had remained absent from our Board, we could have used his knowledge and expertise, on any area without him being officially here. In time the new guys would become our scapegoats because we seem to need them to explain why we haven’t brought back the dominance of 66-74.

I have no great ill will towards PL- he is doing his master’s bidding. I think he too would be better served if he had gone into proper retirement.

  4. Geebee,

Palma, 10 goals,12 assists, 2 CL goals, would have been 3 but for the faintest of touches by Maeda.

    Yes, a definite failure.

    FFS,,really?.I give up.

  5. Quick guide to CQN,

20 and above pages,Celtic fail to win.

No other Board members were injured in the making of this post.

    Sevco fan on Twitter.

If we can win this league they will implode. We’ll claim the CL money and with their compensation payouts, a manager who will leave and board under huge pressure will be in free fall. Keep winning and put that final nail in their coffin. This is huge.

    Hard to argue with this.

    ——

Er … Respectfully it’s not hard to argue with this.

“The world in my dreams” nonsense.

But why would one even bother reading what a Sevco fan thinks about Celtic let alone arguing with them?

Just out of curiosity, S1888, (given you found this narrative so compelling)

Just how many nails are currently nailed into our coffin?

  7. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

And this is genuinely NOT intended to gloss over our problems or our current challenge from Sevco.

    Clearly we have both.

It is intended to put some perspective around the situation.

The “last six league games” has become the default for football’s “form guide”

No more players can be signed this season.

If you truly believe Mark Lawwell is the problem – fair enough.

The good news for you is he can’t damage our league and Scottish Cup prospects any more.

So, as a purely pragmatic step … it might be beneficial to the cause to put public complaints about him on hold … until the next transfer window opens?

Curious also as to why you are so hung up on folks (especially young folks) who would not allow their bodies to be contaminated with an untested vaccine when even the bbc stats expert is now saying we were past peak before we even locked down.

Never mind that you seem to be happy with coercing young people who clearly did not need it and presented no threat to anyone to have it.

The incremental sudden deaths since are not painting a pretty picture. Nor is the total amateur hour and self interested sham of a leadership group involved both sides of the border. The self publicising Airdrie dentist Leitch being the epitomy of this. Eliminate the evidence but ‘we are winging it’ as he gleefully admits to Humza.

    ———————————

Far too many points there to address and too little time this evening.

Basic point is that we were faced with an epidemic that we had no immediate answer to. A lot had to be done quickly and without the care we would have liked. The death rate in ITaly and on the death ship and the secrecy from China left us struggling to respond.

We were lucky that enough people took it and most have escaped without harm. There was, unfortunately a higher death rate amongst the unvaxxed middle aged and elderly. The young might have been excused vaxxing but that might have increased the risk for middle aged and elderly teachers and doctors who had to work closely with them.

My main point is that there remain too many mights for clarity to have yet emerged. The anti-vax side is now focusing on things like lockdown lasting too long and young fit people not needing it; issues I can reach agreement with. But I remember when they were recommending bleach and herbal remedies that they created themselves for profit. And I worry that healthy science-scepticism has morphed into anti-science and a reversion to folklore. This could lead to an increase in all sorts of diseases that were eradicated. Meanwhile, any wrong turns in the race to counnter Covid will be examined and uncovered by qualified medics and scientists who want to know the truth and have methods which are more reliable than folklore and reddit.

Palma has scored five in the league. But regardless I don’t think he’s particularly good. You do. Differing opinions are allowed.

  13. SFtBs @ 5:28 PM,

Without wanting to get into one of our historic debates…

…life’s too short and so is my evening:)))

There wouldn’t necessarily have been an instantaneous impact with the new Chairman.

However the idea that he is a figurehead who has little or nothing to do with the Club operationally seems far fetched.

It certainly wasn’t the official view, it is only one social media interpretation.

The official announcement of his return.

“Celtic is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Lawwell as a director of Celtic plc and its new Non-Executive Chairman. Peter will take up his new role from January 1st, 2023, following the retirement of current Chairman, Ian Bankier

…Peter Lawwell commented: “As a lifelong Celtic supporter it is a great privilege to be asked to take up the position of Chairman, having already been part of our great Club for nearly 18 years.

“These are exciting times for the Club and I look forward to contributing to the well-being and success of the Club.

“Our objective as ever will be to grow and further develop the Club across all areas. Led by an excellent Chief Executive in Michael Nicholson, and Chief Financial Officer Chris McKay, the Club has a high-quality management team in place.

“I will be offering my support and guidance to the Board and executive management team to ensure that we continue to drive the Club forward and protect and promote the interests of our supporters.”

Contributing to the well being and success

…we will continue to drive the Club forward

On the recruitment model he states in the 2023 annual report…

“Our successfully proven strategy has delivered stability and footballing success over many years and remains the same. We must balance the signing of players that can be developed and sold when conditions are optimal alongside the need to sign players who are able to make an immediate impact and deliver footballing success. The execution of this strategy is increasingly challenging owing to wage and transfer inflation, but this formula has underpinned both our footballing success and financial stability over a number of years now and it is vital that we adhere to it.”

Now, in the general scheme of things, no one in the world of Football is going to raise an eyebrow at a Chairman of a Club having an input in such matters, especially one with eighteen years dealing with them as briefly COO and then the long term CEO.

Obviously the balance between players who are able to make an immediate impact and deliver footballing success as had been Ange’s focus before January 2023 and signing of players that can be developed and sold when conditions are optimal changed very significantly in January 2023.

The examples would be the first team players that went that window.

Alistair Johnson was brought in, in December 2022 as a “like for like” replacement for Juranovic.

In January 2023, Oh was brought in for Giakoumakis and Kobayashi was brought in for Jenz. First team regulars replaced by development players.

Since then the focus has been almost exclusively on development players.

So what changed in January 2023!? The CEO is the same, the CFO is the same, yet the model is markedly different.

At the close of the January 2024 window, we had a call by our manager to return to a more balanced approach with more signings able to make an immediate impact.

What does our Chairman think of that?

To say these views are insignificant are totally wrong.

    Hail Hail

  14. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Rodgers needs to find a way to unlock Kyoto’s power in the remaining games or we’re royally screwed. His tactics have nullified him so far this season. That’s on Rodgers and his conceit of himself.

However, the recruitment ‘model’ hasn’t helped. So much for P67’s defence that Celtic need to target young unproven players with good data to ‘progress’. That older journeymen will stymie our growth. Don’t know if he’s been watching the fruits of that model this season…

  15. Up like a bird on

I might be wrong here, but Palmas goal was incorrectly called offside, as he was in 2nd phase play, Arsenal’s first goal, player offside keeper plays ball to striker he scores, Goal,

Real Madrsi player plays through ball to offside striker, defender knocks ball onto off side player and he scores, Goal given,

Why is Celtucs the only 1 being chopped off? Correct me if I am wrong please.

    Turkey

Cambridge Dictionary definition of downgrade “cause something to be considered less valuable”. I’m sure your man Lawwell would have been able to help with that. Too clever by half that chap. So his fanboys seem to have convinced him.

The downgrade is over the past calendar year, not necessarily the January window. Too soon to judge its impact, although Pittodrie was not an encouraging sign. 👍

  17. Up like a bird on

Palma was not interfering with play, the keeper knocked the ball onto him, abadas goal would have stood if he scored. Weird one that doesn’t make sense unless palma was offside before the ball went to abada.

  18. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

    Blind them with science.

Anyone who uses data to model future outcomes is aware of GIGO – garbage in, garbage out.

Someone mentioned earlier today that of the 22 (!!) recent signings only AJ would be guaranteed to start if everyone was available.

    That’s a 4.5% hit rate.

You can analyse all the data you want, but ‘in a misspecified model, the behavior of estimators and test statistics may be different from the one that we would expect on the basis of the assumptions’.

In other words gathering data is fine so long as those gathering the data know what they’re doing/looking for.

Alas, evidence suggests they do not.

For every VVD there’s probably 5 Caldwells or Steven Pressley’s.

Don’t be fooled by randomness. We will continue to sign mediocrity until the penny drops that the process is wrong and the model is misspecified.

  19. And we should have had a pen.

  24. *SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2023-24*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #32 ABERDEEN 1 CELTIC 1 (KUHN)*

    Good evening, friends.

Just like last weekend, we started possibly, creating a few early chances. Just like last week we only managed to score 1 goal and again it was a deflection. Unlike last week we also conceded a poor goal, dropping 2 points and allowing the gap to close at the top of the league. There’s just no buzz about the place at the moment and we really need to hope that something gives us a jolt and wakens us up to the fact that we are currently in a ‘too close to call’ race for the title. Bet365 have both contenders tied at 5/6.

A glimmer of hope for me yesterday was that Kyogo was much more involved, particularly after the introduction of Idah and Kuhn. I’d be delighted if all 3 started our next couple of games.

Another we observation – most folk agreed that we played well below our best yesterday. And yet 13 of our 16 players did enough to earn a vote from at least one informed viewer! Funny old game right enough.

We have now played 32 competitive games, enjoying 20 wins, 5 draws and 7 defeats, scoring 65 goals and conceding 31.

My thanks to the 45 who voted this time around. The turnout for the 4 games in 2024 has gone 80 – 57 – 48 – and now 45. Are folk trying to tell me something?

The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

    Hart*: 44

    Johnston, A*: 19

    Nawrocki: 6

    Scales: 12

    Bernabei: 1

    McGregor: 9

    O’Riley: 0

    Bernardo: 1

    Abada: 0

    Kyogo*: 5

    Palma: 3

    Kuhn: 24

    Idah: 9

    Ralston: 1

    Welsh: 0

    Vata: 1

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Aberdeen are –

    Hart – 5 points

    Kuhn – 4 points

    Johnston – 3 points

    Scales – 2 points

Idah and McGregor – 1 point each

The overall positions after 32 games played are as follows –

    79 points – Scales

    74 points – O’Riley

    53 points – McGregor

    38 points – Carter-Vickers

    28 points – Palma

22 points – Bernardo and Kyogo

    21 points – Johnston, A.

    20 points – Oh

18 points – Hart, and Maeda

    16 points – Yang

    13 points – Taylor

9 points – Johnston M, Nawrocki and Turnbull

6 points – Iwata, Lagerbielke and Ralston

    5 points – Hatate

4 points – Bain, Holm and Kuhn

    3 points – Forrest

    2 points – Abada

    1 point – Idah

0 points – Bernabei, Frame, Haksabanovic, Kelly, Phillips, Starfelt, Tilio, Vata and Welsh

We next travel to Edinburgh for an 8.00pm kick off against low flying Hibs. It’s possible that we might go into that game in 2nd place. But more likely that we will still be ahead but only on goal difference.

Belmont – indeed, you can’t win the all, but it’s hard to take when the loses are a result of self sabotage.

I always tell my son you learn more in defeat than victory and that there’s no such thing as a mistake so long as you learn a lesson.

My point was, rightly or wrongly our focus changed when the new Chairman came on Board.

There are many unknowns in regard to how much influence he has, what BR was told about our recruitment policy when he came back etc

What is a known unknown is that despite what is said on social media, whatever his role is, Peter Lawwell never came back to do a Bankier…

And to be fair, no one in an official capacity ever said he did.

  31. The major problem for me is the Manager is being undermined by people who do not know football, the Lawwell axis is in complete control now,I hope when Brendan leaves in the summer, he buries them no NDA bullshit because we need them out if our Club
