Anything beyond Midtjylland would require extraordinary work

317

The prospect of Midtjylland picking up tomorrow evening where Preston left off is enough to make this morning’s Champions League third qualifying round draw seem less of a priority.  In the event we overcome the Danes, we will face the winners of the PSV Eindhoven – Galatasaray second round tie.

Galatasaray are a month away from the start of the Turkish league, having played only two friendly games since their season closed two months ago.  They finished level on points with 2021 league winners, Beskitas, losing out by a single goal difference.  PSV finished second in the Netherlands, well behind Ajax, and have played four friendlies this month in preparation for facing Galatasaray on Wednesday.

At first glance, Midtjylland are as ill-prepared for the new season as we are, having appointed a manager only a week before Ange Postecoglou arrived at Celtic, and losing their opening league game at home to OB, who finished ninth last term.

Not so PSV and Galatasaray.  We have an extraordinary amount of work to do before meeting sides of that calibre with any confidence.  Beating Midtjylland would guarantee Europa League group stage participation, at the very least, and feels like an achievable objective.  Anything more is not to be included in budget forecasting.

I even think Choccy was the first cross-border use of the tribunal system.

I recently read Pat Nevin’s book. He writes about being contacted by travel tycoon John Boyle with an invitation to join him in a business venture involving the purchase of a Scottish Football club. As I read I assumed he was talking about Motherwell FC but no. This was years earlier and the club he wanted was Celtic, with Nevin as CEO

*they founded Zoom Airlines with Hugh running it, very popular and loved by their employees, took them tae Cuba for their Christmas soiree.

I was on vacation when I heard that they had went breest up, was compositely shocked as you usually have an idea when an airline is struggling, not them.

They paid all the airport fees owed PDQ, personally IMHO they got too big for the competition.

  3. I think I will head up to the game tomorrow on the off chance I can pick up a spare ticket at the ground.

I hope AP continues with his forthright comments, especially on transfers. Its always been a shambles.

  6. Leigh Griff is immature, uneducated and to put it politely what some would call a ned, what he did and has done in the past just proves these things, do I want him associated with the club, of course not, I very much doubt our new coach does either, but he either puts up with it or he is gone, thems the rules, it’s a big bad world out there.

  7. Keith,

Leigh, IMO, has taken the piss 1 time too many – I dinnae blame Leigh – enough is enough.

Ange is Giving Everyone a chance – Magical – but he is a proper hardman I reckon when it comes to making Decisions.

Come on Celtic tomorrow night – give us a morale boosting win!

I could have worded that better.

I agree on the Griff thing, I also agree on the Ange thing, but I still believe rightly or wrongly that these days a job is gold dust, esp a job as the coach at a club like Celtic, it could and undoubtedly should be better but we are still a name world wide and anyone should be proud to be associated with the club, NOT the PLC.

I also believe that he, Ange, is working with his hands tied behind his back, a couple of weeks in and he is telling the world that transfers are taking too long, the Ol Pedro syndrome kicking in I fear :)

The huns aim higher, which is why they have overtaken us by some distance. They will dominate the next 10 years.

Usually agree with most of what you say but they are catchable with the right coach and playing staff. Gerrard is no Klopp. If Ange gets the time, he will build a squad capable of dominating Scottish football in the same way as we did under Rogers.

Just watched the whole media conference with Ange and Callum and wha’d’ya know, both quotes about poor player fitness levels and slow movement in transfers gleefully quoted in the media were taken completely out of context to suit an agenda.

    No wonder we’re paranoid.

  16. !!Bada Bing!! on

ANGE POSTECOGLOU has admitted Celtic have ‘hesitated’ in their transfer business and that it hasn’t helped the club.

The Hoops boss hasn’t hid the fact that he wanted several new signings ahead of a massive season.

He said: “We probably hesitated a couple of times and could have moved faster on some things.

“That hasn’t helped us. In normal circumstances these processes are fairly straightforward.

“Get a player, sign him, take him on a plane, take a photo and away he goes. That process is now taking two to three weeks.

“That’s where we’ve got to move a little bit more precisely, understand there’s going to be lag time and move a bit quicker.

Lawwell obviously hasn’t left the building…

That did make me smile :-)))

PS Not in a nasty way. I accept that many hold very different views from those which I hold.

For instance, I often read that Pat Nevin is intelligent. I can honestly say that I have never heard him say anything that made me agree with that sentiment.

Also, Leigh Griffiths should never paly for Celtic again? What EXACTLY has he done? I don`t mean what does the MSSM say he has done. What has he actually done ?

    HOT SMOKED –

I mentioned something from Pat Nevin’s book that was relevant to Celtic. There followed a short discussion about Nevin which then moved onto Brian McClair.

I and no-one else used the word intelligence and I certainly didn’t allude to his intelligence or lack of it.

    Just to be clear.

  21. ps, maybe our signings take longer because we have the plc approvals structure.

I bet serious spending requires a chain of wet signatures.

  22. SAINT STIVS

A system should be in place to streamline all transfers, we are after all supposed to be a football club, albeit a PLC runs it, but FFS, after all this time you would have thot that a well run club would have some sort of system in place where things in the main run like clockwork, it seems that our PLC is rather different :)

    HH

  23. Celtic will not qualify for champions league this year- why? – because we don’t deserve it!

The board doesn’t seem to care much about that competition, their lack of ambition surely filters back to the dressing room. We will get loads of effort for a few weeks, since Ange has made an impact , but soon the players will feel let down and the fans/media will get on their backs.

Awful season ahead – UNLESS – we start spending and getting targets in the door!

How? Take a leaf out of Rangers approach – ID targets early , get deals done – btw they are signing quality on free transfers – its called forward planning!!

Hard to swallow when we were in such a dominant position not too long ago – see how far arrogance and ignorance gets you in life!

  24. THE EXILED TIM

The thing us. We are not a well run club.

    Lawwells still pulling the strings

  25. Could be wrong but I did read elsewhere that Ange doesn’t like to be messed about by those above him, he may well take it for so long, who apart from him himself knows, I honestly hope the PLC get their act together.
