Anything beyond Midtjylland would require extraordinary work

317

The prospect of Midtjylland picking up tomorrow evening where Preston left off is enough to make this morning’s Champions League third qualifying round draw seem less of a priority.  In the event we overcome the Danes, we will face the winners of the PSV Eindhoven – Galatasaray second round tie.

Galatasaray are a month away from the start of the Turkish league, having played only two friendly games since their season closed two months ago.  They finished level on points with 2021 league winners, Beskitas, losing out by a single goal difference.  PSV finished second in the Netherlands, well behind Ajax, and have played four friendlies this month in preparation for facing Galatasaray on Wednesday.

At first glance, Midtjylland are as ill-prepared for the new season as we are, having appointed a manager only a week before Ange Postecoglou arrived at Celtic, and losing their opening league game at home to OB, who finished ninth last term.

Not so PSV and Galatasaray.  We have an extraordinary amount of work to do before meeting sides of that calibre with any confidence.  Beating Midtjylland would guarantee Europa League group stage participation, at the very least, and feels like an achievable objective.  Anything more is not to be included in budget forecasting.

My surname is Munro, a Scottish and Irish surname. In both languages, it means “man from the River Roe” in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

To my knowledge, I have no Irish ancestors as my Dad (may he RIP) was quite a private man who rarely talked about his origins.

Both my parents are Scottish but I am convinced that I have Irish blood in me. Perhaps that idea came about through my love of the Rebs from an early age!

Apologies if I have bored anyone with my family history.

Very interesting. Always thought of it as a Scottish surname, so every day is a learning day.

    But:

    https://www.houseofnames.com/munroe-family-crest

Munroe was first used as a surname by descendants of the Pictish people of ancient Scotland. The ancestors of the Munroe family lived near the foot of the river Roe in the Irish county of Derry. The Gaelic form of the name is Rothach, which means a man of Ro or a man from Ro.

BTW was Frank Munro a great-grandfather of the unfortunate Shane Duffy?

Absolutely stunning! Many happy memories of my childhood as my mother (God Rest Her Soul) played the piano in the Church.

    Thank you.

I wish Ange best of luck tonight

A decent result would give him another week to implement

his style onto the squad and perhaps the board will open

its purse strings and get him another signing or three

Aye, the true origin of the name has long been shrouded in mystery and may be so forever

I am delighted that I am somehow related to Marilyn Monroe!

What’s that you say? That was not her real name? Who cares!

As for Frank Munro, I could not possibly comment!

  7. Good morning cqn from another beautiful sunny morning in the Garngad expected to reach another 24 – 25 degrees.

Good luck to whatever 11 Ange picks to start tonight.

Off to drop the grandson at the Celtic summer training camp. Then him and his dad will be off to Celtic park at between 5.45 and 6.15 and he isn’t sitting beside his dad and yet they have a parent child ticket…weird.

What was the name of the player who injured Dembele last week?

  12. celticforever on

I was just reading about big Jozo Simunovic still being without a club

I know he was injury prone and had an error in him but surely he

could have done a better job than what we brought in last season

and the same goes for PC Lustig where although not as good as his earlier

years he definitely got Celtic and would have been good for the dressing room

    Cheers guys.

I recall the assault but couldn’t remember who did it.

A little bit of online chat about the act of violence by Kasey Palmer

    But not much.

I simply can’t understand players like Palmer being motivated to do such things in a so-called pre-season friendly?

    Why did he do this?

    Was Karamoko targeted?

Thought these games were supposed to be largely about fitness and sharpness.

Inaccurate financial info only adds to our anxieties on an already stressful day. It would be very helpful for all of us if you could accurately outline how exactly the Huns will make 20m more than us from cL qualification

  22. Just to help, I’ve previously done a comparison using our and their previous financials and the uefa distribution figures from the uefa website

A bit of guess work involved but the difference is unlikely to be much more than £10m

The Huns should be saying their prayers, without it they’re in serious trouble. We aren’t

  24. I like reading about the financial toing and froing of football clubs because it’s something I have no training in. Over the recent months a work colleague (hibbee) encouraged me to listen to the “Price of Football” podcast and Ive come to look forward to their style and content, even if it has glossed over Scottish football’s recent past. It has gone some way to explaining to me the rationale behind how and why today’s clubs are run the way they are and made me wonder if Celtic are being run in a way that separates, as much as possible, financial risk to the club from on the field success. Take away the vagaries and inconsistencies of player form, injuries ,refereeing decisions and the like, and replace it with player recruitment decisions, contract negotiations, sponsorship deals, vouchers, season ticket deals and decisions taken for the long term interests of the club. Excitement, emotion and the short term v management, consistency and the longer term. I know I want both to coexist and neither to outweigh and destabilise the other.
