Attitude for Tynecastle

2311

I watched Hearts batter Pat Fenlon’s Hibs into submission at Easter Road last month.  They are not a good team but they have elbows and commitment, often the key resources in a football game.  With our interest in the League Cup and Europe curtailed, and the league title a sure thing, it is enormously important that we remain in the Scottish Cup into the New Year.

Attitude is the most important attribute for Celtic this weekend.

Things you don’t expect to do when you start blogging: I took four calls from journos yesterday asking if I knew a Celtic fan prepared to go on record as an IRA supporter!  I don’t, for the record, not one, so no one else should bother checking.  Lack of support for that organisation and, where support exists, an awareness that representing yourself as such, is not inconsequential, will explain the dearth.  Just as it’s not inconsequential when you represent your club.  I can’t see many inviting the consequences.

I also got a call yesterday and a faxed copy of a contemporary Celtic View (yes, a fax) from a fan who was beside Jock Stein when he went into the crowd at Annfield that day in 1972.  It was all very cordial, of course, no one argued with Jock.

Jock was at the height of his powers.  Five years from the European Cup win, two from his last final and four months since losing a European Cup semi-final on penalties, he had yet to lose a league as Celtic manager.  His comment in the View, “The Wreckers are chanting about things that have nothing to do with football” was respected, Celtic fans went back to football matters.  But this was 1972.  News from Ireland was despairing.  Rangers fans (and according to newspaper reports, Hearts fans) were chanting “UDA” without censure, Celtic fans eventually retorted.

This is all sooo last century, apart from the consequences, of course.

Sharp focus for Sunday…

Scottish Celts on the verge of Victory Shield glory

By: Newsroom Staff on 29 Nov, 2013 16:43

FOUR Celtic youngsters have been named in the starting XI for Scotland in this evening´s Victory Shield decider against England.

Dan Higgins, Mark Hill, Theo Archibald and Clavin Miller will start the match which will determine Scotland´s fate. Scott Booth´s side only need a point to finish top of the table.

Wales sit second, equal on four points with Scotland, but having played all three games they can not win the tournament. England are a point behind, needing a victory to leapfrog up to pole position.

Celtic have six representatives in the Scotland squad, with Regan Hendry and Ross Doohan also being included in the mix.

Tell your mate that his use of the term HUN had absolutely no religious connotation, and nothing to do with Sevco fans….that he was referring to the HR personnel in his place of work Problem solved !

  8. King Vic

IMO if he does it in work time (out with acceptable use policy of co for use of social media etc) … Then he is clear

If he mentions company in his conversation .both in AND out of work…they can pull him in

Other than that the HR must havd a hun in situ :)

    Dear Emu

Thank you for contacting me about the Celtic supporters arrested in Amsterdam.

While I agree that police brutality cannot be condoned in any circumstances, in this instance the matter concerns the legal process of a foreign country and we have to trust that these individuals will be given their right to due process in accordance with Dutch law.  I understand that those involved are now appealing the court’s decision.

Unfortunately as those involved are not constituents of mine I am unable to pursue the matter further but I appreciate you taking the time to raise this serious matter and I will continue to follow any developments on this case.

    Yours sincerely

Some good advice which I would echo.

I assume he is allowed to know his accuser. I would have your friend look at the accusers fb etc, in my experience the type of person who goes to the effort of complaining about about something like this, has a few skeletons in his closet.

Probably a bigot egged on by his pals on follow follow.

    Kevj…how are pal,please don’t go.

Kojo …I’m told Tomlin will join the cause in January.

  13. Recent events have been really shocking. Firstly you have the disgraceful scenes at the bigotdome with the Army showing themselves for what they are and nothing seems to be done about it,then the police standing back while ajax hooligans hit our fans with anything they can get their hands on again nothing done.We then have the Amsterdam fiasco and now the Green Brigade getting slaughtered for in my opinion a well thought out display. We really have to stand behind the Green Brigade as they are the only ones with any balls to stand up to the authorities.

  14. Celtic Plc is an embarrassment in where it is perceived on planet fitba and fair minded society in general.

Celtic FC is a struggling football team at the top table and has good players when in a lesser environment.

Celtic fans are second to NONE the world over.

Lay off the Green Brigade please……they are such a big part of our family.

In all seriousness, your buddy must not be interviewed on his own. Hopefully, he is a member of a union, in which case his rep or shop steward can accompany him. Failing that he , under law, can invite a person of his choice to represent him. Even if it is moral support, it is infinitely better than being bullied and put in the dock on your tod. Good luck…..post us next week on the outcome. Hope the lad is not working at Park a Gardens !

  16. eddieinkirkmichael

It was an interesting piece, and Kevin Rooney creates an interesting overview re tolerance etcetera, but he undermines his own thesis by his own conclusion. Does anyone on here believe that we, or anyone else for that matter, are, or should be, free to sing or chant whatever we, or they, want?

  17. ironically, whether you support the sentiments expressed in the GB banners or not, it is the vilification that forces outwith (and within) seek to rain down on such acts, that means you should support such shows/demonstrations if not for their sentiment at the very least for the freedom to do so.

The more you adopt the “don’t do it in my club’s ground”, the more you pander to those who look suspiciously at you if you don’t wear a poppy.

You shout at the GB for expressing a view, but you stand idly by in July as thousands march by playing tunes of hate.

Many have adopted the “whatever makes my life easy” route – the only problem is that life is never easy.

By the way, if you’ve a spare ticket for Sunday and want some legal protection, let me know!

  18. King Vic, your friend could take two routes, first fight it with all the info supplied. This will be long and different companies have different standards some are very intolerant of social media, thankfully your friend didn’t use company mail or machinery as then unfortunately he would be screwed.

Route 2, is where you realise that once a complaint is made the machine has to start rolling and the machine is always dumb, it doesn’t listen to reason. The hr people have to address the complaint and by challenging it they will have no choice but to send it up the chain and then it’s all in coin toss territory. They are looking to tick two boxes first that they followed up the complaint and two the offender is apologetic and it won’t happen again.

That should make it go away, so I basically agree with Kojo. For the record in life I have usually picked route one for myself and even when I won I ultimately lost as that stuff follows you.

    Good luck

  19. Bhoy22

Well said. Fek all wrong with the banners IMO. Would be worse if they were hitting stewards on the head with chairs. Media very quiet on Sevconians at Arbroath belting out The Sash.

Didn’t bother me too much as it nullified my tinnitus for 20 minutes…..but I believed that is one of the anthems on the proscribed list. Hail, Hail ! Off to a fundraiser in memory of our dear son. Funds to brain tumour research…same as neuroblastoma. Hail, Hail. We have had more to worry about than banners of a Scottish patriot and an elected MP, I can assure you!

The Plc love to talk about the Celtic ‘family’. In my family, there have been boisterous, sometimes wayward teenagers. Do you try to educate, support and influence their behaviour, or do you boot them out the family home? It depends on your parenting skills. I prefer to offer love and support. Hail Hail the GB!

    Wonderful post.

So we are just to sit back and let UEFA deny anyone the right to free speech.Would love to see them try to win that one in the European courts.Bosman showed the world these people dont rule the world. They can say what they like, they are not above the law of the land

I have heard that Celtic will contest the decision.I would bloody well hope so.Does anyone really think that the UEFA observers in the stand had any idea what the banners were about. When the bannerfrom the Aberdeen game was reported by STV,I think we all know who the”Offended” were.

  22. The King Vic 67,

A few words of advice from a former professional of the same dark arts as big wavy.

    Big wavy’s advice worth considering

Ignore,at all costs, the utter P1SH posted by others on here.

Get good legal advice….is your mate in a union?…if so they should be able to help….what is the co. policy?….what does it say?…what does it mean?

If your mate comes up against some hard times, you can contact me via email (Paul knows mine) and I will give my best advice for free.

That story really rips ma knittin!

Hun is derogatory certainly but not actionable in any legal or company conduct sense. It is in the same bracket as ‘fool’

I also think it is ironic that the person who complained is showing all the base behaviour which they feel agrieved to be tarnished with.

Massive overreaction to try to get a colleague sacked. Have word, have a fight but don’t ruin a career.

As others have said, the name is used for Rangers fans and nothing more.

My company have updated the HR manual to cover personal social media accounts recently.

I do not have colleagues on my FB or linkedin even.

Your friend should join a union pronto and get the rep in . HR will back down mellow then.

I did this for an employee once due to sexist jokes being passed on(not very sexist and not very funny)

Note on record for 6 months and deleted. Career went from strength to strength.

    Celtic Mac

    19:15 on

Rooney comes from the same school of thought as Stuart Waiton, both believe that it is ok for any fan to sing anything. Waiton even argued at a FAC public meeting that fans of deadco should be allowed to sing what ever they want, regardless of the contents of their songs. As I said they aren’t my view but some of what they say is relevant to the argument.

  26. King Vic

Just reading back. If you are still around, has your friend been invited to attend an investigation into a complaint received, or been invited to a disciplinary meeting? If the latter, the company have no rights to go straight to disciplinary. Ask him to request a copy of the complaint and then make sure he asks for time to consider the complaint. Don’t try and defend the complaint without time to read it over and take time to submit a defence.

They need to tell him who has submitted the complaint. It should also be in writing. If a disciplinary, make sure he is accompanie, but as I say, they cannot go straight to disciplinary.

Tell him to request a copy of the minutes from the meeting.

  27. I want to state here and now,”After watching Celtic for over 50 years, the Green Brigade are the best thing ever to happen to our support.

All the hand wringers, get a life.I remember my auld man, getting into trouble every year as the hordes gathered in our street to set off, effing the Pope, throughout Glasgow. He hated the hand wringers then who would be the “Turn the other cheek”mob.Came out with sayings like”Oh,let them have their day”.The morons knew who every Catholic was in the St and used to try and smash windows, get up the stairs and do mischief.I remember my auld man and two of his mates battling them back down the stairs. No help from the Chapel going hand wringers..Have hated these people as much as I hate the huns since then.Fight fire with fire. The only way.More power to the young boys of the GB

  28. There may well be nothing wrong with the banners, as has been argued here. However, they are considered political – difficult to deny when you are trying to make a political point – therefore it contravenes UEFA rules. As such Celtic will again be subject to disciplinary action and fined. The continuation of this may eventually result in action of a more severe nature. Is that what you want?
