Audit, administer, delegate

796

The comment in today’s Telegraph by Joe Ledley confirming that, in the event they win the league early, Celtic have considered giving players some extended rest period before the end of the season has a lot of focus about it.

We have Champions League qualifiers starting on 2 July and hopefully extending six games later in the last week in August, all plans must be made with the objective of being as strong as possible for these games.

Last season APOEL Nicosia got through the Champions League group stages, beat Lyon in the last 16, before being stopped in the quarters by Real Madrid, but their European adventure this season was ended in August by Neftchi Baku.  Rangers run to the Uefa Cup final in 2008 was quickly followed by an August elimination at the hands of the mighty Kaunas.  We don’t need reminded of what happened in 2005, when the club formerly known as Artmedia Bratislava, and no longer playing top flight football, caught Celtic cold.  Five times.

I’m keen to hear from Celtic on policing and stewarding at games. The club have to be attentive to all season ticket holders who feel they have been poorly treated, by police or stewards. Processes to deal with such matters must be open to supporter groups to audit, perhaps even to administer. Delegate thus, and you resolve many concerns.

The Lions Roar event at the Kerrydale Suite on 1 March, with a film of the 1967 European Cup final, will have commentary from Bertie Auld, Stevie Chalmers, Bobby Lennon, Jim Craig, John Fallon, Charlie Gallacher, Billy McNeill, John Clark and John Hughes.  Mike Jackson will also be there with Billy.  Tickets went on sale six days ago and there are only a few left…..

That would be worth trying. What we have is over zealous policing not a club conspiracy against the GB (although there are differences to be addressed in a mature fashion).

There appears to be a latent tribal memory based on past experience of Celtic Board’s that their role is to thwart the support’s wishes making them our enemy.

In the early 80s Celtic Parks advertising hoarding carried adverts for the then Murray International Metals the chairman of whom was one of the Tory party’s biggest financial contributors

So when you go to the turnstiles, as happened on Saturday, to swipe your card it says on the wee display ‘banned for 1 game’ That was the Police, without Celtic’s consent to arbitrarily give out a wee intimidatory one match ban?

Why 1 match? If you are fit to be banned it should be for ever surely, not a ‘get it up ye’ type 1 game affair. And if you think the polis managed to rig the turnstyle machines without Celtic’s say so then what can I say?

    They did.

I assume they thought Gordon Brown would be there, with the added publicity that might bring.

Maybe not if they get a pile of arrests soon …..

Self interest and plain old abuse of power are behind the polis behaviour…..give moderately intelligent people too much power ….this is what you get !!!

Make no mistake the polis will be right up for it for the remainder of the season …

GB should box clever as i see the FOCUS funding disappearing and with it the hassle……what a monumental waste of public funds

  8. Trophyboy,

The polis car drew up beside them at traffic lights . One cop gesticulated at Dominic who foolishly retorted .They then got pulled over judt before Renfree X.I dont know what the volume was but it was probably loud.Hardly a warrant for a weekend lie in though.

Isn’t that what polis the world over get paid to do!!

The football harassment is just a small part of the decrease in civil liberties in Britain.

Busting football fans(public think hooligans) is good press for the Edinburgh Politburo and the Sunday Mail munchers..

God forbid that anyone would actually be happy that Scotland has a successful football team in Europe again, except us lot of course..

This bill is the bastard son of the Poll Tax and the Criminal Justice Bill…

Down with that kind of thing..

  10. Peterscarff

There are certain criteria for arrested folk getting a lie over…unless your nephew has a bad record then the polis were at it …

  11. I see a lot of people advocating using the police complaints procedures to deal with the current GB problem and it makes me think back to Hampden a couple of seasons ago when the rabid chief cop ordered snatch squads into the GB section and threatened anyone questioning this with arrest- including many people unconnected with the group. Several dozen people then visited the local cop shop to complain to be told by a grinning desk polis that they couldnt as the forms had run out. They have ways of covering things up- think Hillsbrough or the battle of Janefield st

  12. Following Saturday’s events inside Celtic Park and the statements thereafter released by The Green Brigade and others we would like our position on the matters raised in these statements known.

The Affiliation always have and will hopefully continue to have a good working relationship with Celtic and other fans organisations, this to us is paramount.

We have been and still are strongly opposed to the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act, this is widely supported within our member clubs. Ourselves and the other three main supporters organisations (CSA, AICSC and Green Brigade) have met and discussed supporters rights, concerns and appropriate advice required if any fan falls foul to this bill. Our position hasn’t changed regarding this matter.

Saturday’s events involving both The Green Brigade and general fans in and around the concourse area of section 111 are not scenes we wish to see at Celtic matches. The FoCUS Police Unit who are now a permanent feature at all Celtic matches home and away carried out an operation within the confines of Celtic Park which had not only an affect on The Green Brigade but on the match attendance and atmosphere, this is something we hope is never repeated regardless of fans organisation or status.

In recent weeks have seen finger pointing, whispers, rumours and lies aimed at organisations and individuals within them from sections of our own support, a sad state of affairs from people trying to further their own means and status, whilst the groups go about their respective business.

Two of our committee last met the club officially before Christmas at a casual informal meeting, this is the meeting referred to in The Green Brigade statement, this meeting was attended by us and us alone, no other organisation. During this meeting we had discussed fans concerns over policing at both home and away matches including over zealous spot checks on supporters coaches and in stadia filming by the FoCUS Police Unit and security, we had been informed of a planned meeting of all organisations together with the club scheduled for January, unfortunately this never materialised.

On January 27th (22 days ago) two of our committee met two Green Brigade members to discuss the current situation and relationship with the club, ourselves and also factors out-with our control which were becoming harmful to both groups. A positive resolution was reached and we departed on good terms. At this meeting we proposed to The Green Brigade that we set up a joint meeting with the club, with us (The Affiliation) acting as mediators, there has been no reply to this, this offer still stands.

We feel now more than ever all groups and the club must come together and form a bond for the good of the support and the club as a whole, working together as a unit to protect both. Hopefully soon we will all sit round the table and work together to form a solid bond within the support. If we are all working together with the club then no individual group should feel isolated.

With a title looming, Scottish Cup and Champions League still to play for we should be focusing on our team and what we as a club have achieved this season, hopefully the recent events can be resolved by all working together to find a resolution that benefits us all.

Pfayr-The polis funding for the GB Harassment Division is up for renewal soon,i heard it will be cut by a fair amount.

    Bada, how you doing.

As I said earlier, the jobs were advertised on a voluntary basis only. However, many who applied got nowhere near the jobs for whatever reason we will never know.

Good friend was mega disappointed not to get job, but certain shift at certain station filled its boots.

The point you make is relevant.

Is it possible that stewards have this power to use at their discretion, and the PLC knew nothing of it?

    Hypothesis CSC

  15. Peterscarff

In which case …just bully boy policing …disgraceful

If he isn’t prosecuted for this he should lodge an official complaint

  16. PJBhoy

Here is another one. Is it possible that the PLC are in an uncomfortable position, wanting rid of the GB to appease the Police but not in a position to say it in public because of the fans backlash?

  17. Auldheid @20.08

At the same time, how can the Polis have so much influence on, what is after all, the Celtic “footprint” – that is, Celtic Park and the surrounding area?

Are CFC “passively” allowing the Polis to even up the score thanks to the new legistration?

Surely CFC must have sanctioned the “one-match ban” announced to ST holders going through the turnstyle just before KO on Saturday?

There seems to be a lot still unsaid officially on this “continuing harrassment of supporters” debate…

For me it stems from the Polis having too much power, which they are blithely abusing.

There has been virtually no trouble at a match in Scotland for 30 years.

At the risk of sounding like the FPLG, who’s decided all of a sudden to stir it up and why?

And how much is all this Polis “activity” costing?

    Gardez la Foi

  18. ….Pfayr.

I no from experience from when i was young the way some of our police had no hesitation to lift you and not just for a lie in.hh

  19. By the way Celtic are part of the FoCUS committee, from the website…

‘FoCUS was formally established in July 2011 and is based at Helen Street Police Office, Glasgow. The team was established following publication of the Scottish Government Joint Action Group report which made 41 recommendations, all intended to maximise supporters’ enjoyment of the game whilst tackling those who misbehave.

The Joint Action Group, which comprises of Football Authorities, Celtic FC, Rangers FC, Police and Scottish Government, identified a need to work in partnership to tackle the minority who behave in an unacceptable way at football.’

  20. Indeed. It is possible. The question is who gave the go ahead for one match bans. The second question is, specifically, why?

I would imagine that management Police and stewarding have regular meetings…

Love to be a fly on the wall there.

  21. Can I Have Raspberry…..-Good at this end mate,a guy I know is in FOCUS Unit, gets a call on a Friday to go to different grounds/addresses on a Saturday. He said funding will be cut due to overtime, expenses claims (shocker eh?)

  22. Just watched that YouTube clip of Christine Graham questioning Professor Devine. I had heard about her even up the numbers statement and did not take it seriously. I could not believe what I heard in a public select committe meeting at Holyrood prior to the Offensive Behaviour Act. What a complete and utter auld bigot she is. The SNP make the DUP look like Sinn Fein.

Paul McBride RIP supported this bill and I am sure it cannot have turned out the way he envisaged. He didn’t see it as a way to attack Celtic fans as it is being used now.

Apart from a Scottish Cup run, this season is more or less done. This GB story and the persecution of Celtic fans and who is behind it will be the story for the remainder of the season. I suspect Campbell Corrigan , Peter Lawwell or even the GB are not playing with a clean deck. The SNP have been crystal clear and Salmond/Graham must be delighted by the evening up process underway.

As the season ticket renewal process starts soon, this GB situation will be a high tension backdrop for Peter Lawwell. He is one PR mistake away from losing 20k season ticket holders. I hope he has been playing with a clean deck. Time will tell on this one. My sixth sense tells me , he is not squeaky clean and he will be giving this situation a lot of thought.

Today is only the beginning – is echoing again!

  23. ….pfayr

    20:08 on 18 February, 2013

You certainly have a point, and elements in the police may also have wanted, and pushed for this legislation, but elements within the SNP were as enthusiastic for it, and without that political will, it would not have been pushed through, at least not in the form it was.

Sorry for the tardy reply, busy old evening.

  24. starry plough

No idea, maybe they just get requests from the police saying, ‘look these people here are an organised group of evil thugs, you need to get rid’ and Celtic say, ‘here are their details’

Maybe it’s more simple than that. Perhaps the PLC don’t like people with views contrary to their own, even if those views aren’t illegal yet, perhaps this is a marriage of convenience.

  25. Surely this whole GB thing is getting out of hand…..I have lots of questions like…..who are the GB, can anyone join, who are the leaders and how do you become one or does anyone even know the answer…..my view is this…you are a guest in someones house in effect, if they ask you not to sing certain songs or behave in a certain way then that’s what to do…it’s as easy as that…abide by the rules and if that means no rebel songs then that’s what it means….a small price to pay to see the celts and the big bad polis will go away
