Barca calling out Uefa, sympathy for Forrest

552

My initial reaction to a Sunday 12:00 kick off time is not positive. It’s out of routine, so there’s an inherent objection, but as I don’t have a long journey to Celtic Park it may end suit me better than a later kick off.

Fans who travel from great distances will have the inconvenience of an early rise, but some, who are dependent on public transport, will be prevented from attending, which is never a scenario to be treated lightly.

I see a bit of angst against James Forrest over his decision to reject a new Celtic contract and opt instead to leave the club when his contract expires next year, if not before. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of James. When he arrived in the team in the wake of Aiden McGeady’s departure he was on fire, but the intervening years have not been kind.

Injury has robbed him of a regular starting place, and a fair bit of form when he does get in the team. Sean Maloney was in a similar position a few years back. Injured for long periods, even when he was fit he was often a substitute. He needed to leave Celtic Park for a fresh start. Had he stayed, I don’t think he would have rediscovered his early peaks. Putting all emotive issues aside, James Forrest looks like a player in need of a fresh start.

He’s not alone, of course.

Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu took a shot across Uefa bows when he told the BBC he wants big (trans: rich) clubs who fail to qualify for the Champions League to be given wild card access. Make no mistake, this is a follow up to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s recent utterances on creating a closed-shop tournament.

Bartomeu also said he views the FA Premier League as the biggest threat to Barcelona, which is 100% true. When teams like Bayern Munich and Barcelona coordinate statements on structural change you know that profound moves are underway.

I’m all for change, Celtic have much to gain, but we need to organise quickly. Find similar allies – big clubs from Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Turkey and Portugal – and plan accordingly. Europe’s major clubs are each leaving hundreds of millions of TV money on the table each year because of the existing league and European tournament structures.

England has opened their eyes to what is possible. Change of some sort is inevitable now the ball is in play.

For any Irish Bhoys or indeed anyone who can access Irish Tv,

TG4 ( Irish languange station) are showing an hour long documentary at 9.30 on Dr Kathleen Lynn

Amazing character, born into a comfortable Dublin Middle Class Protestant family she was at various times in her life a doctor to Dublins inner city poor,a socialist, suffragette, member of the Irish Citizen Army who took part in the 1916 rebellion,a prisoner in Kilmainham, a TD (member of parliament)

Could be well worth watching, another one of the extraordinary people who helped create the Irish Republic

Me too .I also really enjoyed the recent Juve v Napoli game .Fabulous defending from both sides in both games .Napoli are showing signs of living up to their Should Have nickname. Should have beaten Juve but lost / should have beaten Milan but only managed a draw.

****Last Man Standing 7 update 3 days to kick off****

With 3 days left to LMS7 kick off with the Celtic game being the first fixture of the new tournament, we are delighted to have 85 entrants on board. Only 3 away from the magical 88.

With the roll over from LMS7 the prizepot is now in 4 figures.

All welcome to join us. Remember all you need to do is to correctly pick an unique winner each week from the fixtures provided. We now even allow you to pick a draw. How simple can it be?

Congrats to HT who registered as no 67 :-)

So why is it called the Champions League?

Simply put, it is moving to the Geographically Accidental but Lucky League.

    Simply shocking.

  5. Bournes I think the problem is that Celtic are doing now about the now very transparent corruption. And I don’t think the playing field can be any more unlevel.

We are being cheated, they aren’t hiding it and we are doing nothing about it.

    Does that sum it up?

  6. A few words on James Forrest – many of the lads I watch the games with have played at a good level. Many have played or still play other sports, rugby, basketball, cycling, and several have incurred hamstring or quadriceps injuries in the past.

Each time we see Jamesie return from his frequent injuries, much of the time in cold weather, these lads express astonishment that he is not wearing compression under shorts to support his muscles, and keep them warm and flexible. Why is he not instructed to do so?

I have been a supporter of James in the past, but, sadly, his contributions are now negligible. Far too often he makes a run, pulls his socks up, makes another run, brushes his air, runs again, appeals vainly to the ref, runs towards a defender rather than away from him, passes the ball backwards when he has ample opportunity to run at a single defender, all of which is totally unproductive. He could be devastating, but in many games appears to want to avoid any responsibility. Someone he respects needs to have a word in his ear that the career of a football player, particularly a winger, is a very short one.

Someone on this blog (apologies that I can’t remember who) made the succinct point that James is the fastest player in Scotland but somehow contrives to be second to every 50-50 ball. Says it all really. I can’t see any other Club being as patient as Celtic, so he may be condemning himself to early obscurity.

  11. God’s sake Celtic Football Club grow a pair and tell Sevco Ridden Sky Sports, that no way will you be allowed to show the game on Sunday Mothers Day , can our club do that or we under contract to that lousy Sport Station. I know one thing for sure I’m ditching them in June when my contract is up,not one thin dime.of me,I’m hoping to either have BT Sports or Virgin, but I don’t know which one is the best or the cheapest

a teacher friend’s getting the sack – told yesterday -off you go -you’re on gardening leave – can’t fight capability procedures -head has him by the bawbag- they can get rid of teachers so easily here and he’s on the leadership team – it’s a completely political move to buy the head more time as the school’s doing shi&e – all these academies – money going straight to the head – they can do what they want with it-it’s a matter of luck if the head’s in it for themselves or for the kids

  21. Hello again all you young rebels.

I’ll be sorry to see JF go but you need more than talent and speed

to become a Celtic legend you need a big heart and commitment

and in my opinion that was lacking in his game but i wish him all

the best but i think he’s on the downward slope now.

Took the wee mhan out for a training session just down the road

where they are building two new houses, flat ground gray ash type

covering ready for laying the concrete block so he said.

” why are we training here Papa?

” Because thats what we trained on only it was black ash and full of

broken glass and bricks and it will toughen you up, and when you

play on that bowling green of a park on Sundays you’ll be flying ”

That night his mother was on the phone.

” what have you done to him? his knees are all skint and i can’t get

the dirt out of his shorts ”

” Er, just a different wee training thingy ”

” He said you had him on a building site ”

” Somebody’s at the door i’ll phone you back ”

Looks like the silly old sods in trouble again.
