Battle of the Lennons

917

It’s the battle of the Lennons at Celtic Park tomorrow with Danny enjoying the best run of form in his managerial career.  St Mirren are on 20 points, joint with St Johnstone, who they beat in Perth last month, and have already taken a point from Ibrox this season.  They are a technically sound team who will be more difficult to create chances against than Dunfermline were on Wednesday.  They can also play a bit.

Team formation will be enormously important for Neil Lennon.  This is the type of fixture he would previously select a 4-4-2, with two wingers, giving width to the game, but leaving a central two outnumbered by opponents who inevitably pack the middle of the field.  If Celtic persist with this strategy they’ll need to tighten up in the middle.

There is an interesting subplot to this weekend’s games.  Earlier this month there was a daunting 12 points between Celtic and Rangers.  A win for Celtic tomorrow would see that gap shrink to 4 points, with Rangers playing their game in hand away to Kilmarnock at lunchtime on Sunday.  As well as playing for three points tomorrow, Celtic have the opportunity to put pressure on Rangers.

    Sunday 2-10-2010 heart v Celtic

Neil Lennon’s 6 match ban was reduced after an appeal hearing at Hampden Stadium last night. The Celtic manager had been issued with the ban after excessive misconduct when he clashed with fourth official Steven McLean and subsequently sent to the stand by referee Craig Thompson in Celtic’s clash against Hearts at Tynecastle last November.

Seven months on, the Celtic boss still believes he was wronged by the officials in being sent off but concedes his reaction to the call was excessive.

“I still feel the sending off was unjustified,” Lennon told the Scottish Sun. “But my reaction was over the top and that’s something I would change if I could.”

“Lennon” was also given a four match ban for his clash with Rangers assistant “Ally McCoist” in the Scottish Cup replay between the two clubs on March 2, which he served concurrently with his suspension following the Hearts game.

His touchline conduct has attracted criticism but the former Hoops captain insists he won’t alter his passionate approach.

“I wouldn’t really change anything about how I’ve gone about the job,” he said. “You are what you are.”

    UEFA promotion for Steven McLean

Posted on January 14, 2011 by Craig Winning

Congratulations to Steven McLean, who has been promoted to Category 3 within UEFA.

    ******* ********** **********

McLean has made terrific progress this season and has become a regular in the Scottish Premier League. And his efforts have been recognised with his recent promotion, which was announced early in the New Year.

The Glasgow Association congratulates Steven and everyone is certain this is just the first step in many more promotions to come.

Looks like a well done for the previous work

Behaviour of a large section of Dunfermline fans was outrageous and no arrests were being made. Charged the Celtic fans sitting next to them twice. Many of those fans had their kids with them.

witnessed it as well , i noticed that after they charged forward two officers stood in front filming them. Prsume this is the police tactic, film and arrest later.

The difference in first to second half with the respective merits of Paddy v Commons?

Commons is more direct and tends to shoot on site.

Paddy creates space but holds on to ball looking for space ahead.

Our forward momentum is more obvious with Commons but was wasteful on wed.

Paddy was out of sorts and seemed frustrated.

The lack of movement off the ball causes us to have v ery ineffective possession in a backwards and sideways direction.

Still think we lack a plan for the last third and this causes us to hit speculative crosses and shots or cross field play.

It seems to be the point our momentum stops.

Every team gives the ball away on from time to time particularly the expressive ones.

But if your team is properly coached and set out in correct manner you will be in a position to win it back.

Work rate and proper formation is the key.

A poorly implemented system can have a higher but ineffective work rate.

It’s what you work on at training that can maximise effect.

I’ve seen every Irish international match and have never heard The Fields being sung until quite recent years. It was at Celtic Park that I first heard the song and now it’s being aired at rugby games by Munster and London Irish and a version at Liverpool. Even the Celtic huddle has been adopted by the Irish at soccer internationals and GAA teams. Danny Doyle recorded the song before Paddy Reilly had the big hit in 1983.

St Mirren are playing some good football and I think we were fortunate to come away from paisley with a 2-0 win last time out .

Hope the bhoys go into the game with the right attitude .

    As for Paddy

I thought after the first 45 on Wed that it was ideal for Paddy but for some reason it didn’t seem to work out

I am a big Paddy fan and not so keen on Sammi but to be fair I thought Sammi made more of an impact on Wed
