Be straight with the people of Leicester, Brendan

212

None of us are particularly focussed on Tynecastle tonight, so you can imagine how players who have worked for and with Brendan Rodgers for over two years are feeling right now.  They have all the excuses in the world for a reversal, but they have to find it in themselves to put all off-field distractions aside and beat Hearts.

Brendan, Chris Davies and Kolo Toure have left the building.  Neil Lennon has been away less than five years but he worked with few who are likely to feature tonight.  The most important element of consistency we have is Scott Brown.  He has seen it all in his 12 years at Celtic and worked hand in glove with Neil during the latter’s four years as manager.

Yesterday I gave Brendan credit for his honesty, but something rankled in his later comments at Leicester, “I’ll give my life to make the supporters proud of their club.”  No, you won’t, Brendan.  It’s just a gig.  If Tottenham come calling you’ll be off.  We all know this, so be straight with the people of Leicester.

‘I don’t want to be compared to Brendan’

Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “[Compared to the manager who walked in in 2010] I’m not as volatile. I wanted to take on the world when I first took over. You learn from that, you mellow from that.

“But I still have that energy. Tactically you learn the game as you go along. I don’t have all the answers, and certainly I don’t want to be compared to Brendan.

“I know some people will do that as we go along. But Brendan has his way and it has been fantastic, and I have my way”.

Neil Lennon “I had my speedos and factor 50 packed and now I’m stuck here with you guys”… the people of Doha must be thankful Neil was given the Celtic gig…

“It’s been a whirlwind 24, 36 hours” – Neil Lennon on his dramatic return to Celtic as manager.

  4. The King is dead, God save the King.

Like all of us, I’ m bitterly disappointed in the manner in which Brendan left the club, very , very poor timing.

I will refrain from bad mouthing him, what’s the point really?

He did well for us during his tenure but my only comment would be his ego wrote cheques his talent could not match, or put another way, we had the sizzle , not the steak.

Like Paul, his comment about giving his life to Leicester really stuck in my craw as well but I have to get over it, and that I will. Neil Lennon IS Celtic, the real deal, and because of that apart from us Scotland hate that and will do all they can to screw us in any way they can.

So, let;s start this new chapter by laying down a marker tonight and hammer that trash from Edinburgh.OK?

Away to @JamTarts , then away to @HibernianFC for @CelticFC manager Neil Lennon: “I’m sure I’ll get a nice welcome from both sets of fans” , he said , smiling .

Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “I’ve been on good behaviour this year. I’ve had no issues with referees or linesmen, to the point that I was voted on to the committee.

“Earlier in my career I wanted to take on the world – with a big chip on my shoulder. It’s not a chip now, but I still have something on my shoulder. I like to have that edge.

“But in terms of my behaviour, I will monitor that as best as I can. It’s maturity, it’s experience. Obviously, you don’t want to be here now and sit in the stand and not be able to do your job properly – so I’m very aware of that.”

  9. So paul, Brendan did not give his all when he was celtic manager?

The board clearly wanted him out . That is why he was not backed in the last two transfer Windows. Brendan jumped before he was pushed.

£6m for Brendan and turn the support against him. It’s all brendan’s fault.

    Job done by the board.

    More from Kennedy

Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy: “When Brendan was leaving, he asked me to be prepared to take the team and see where it went from there.

“It quickly evolved to the situation I’m sitting in now where Neil has asked me to be his assistant manager and I’m delighted just to do that.

“We’re in a crucial moment – timing wise it was difficult for people to understand and get their heads around. But behind that, there’s a lot of stability in the club.

“That’s why Neil will come in and do a terrific job because of the support he will have behind him”.

  12. traditionalist88 on

Lennon tells Celtic to ‘carry on’

Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “You can always look for flaws, you can always look for things to improve on. You’re never going to get the perfect team otherwise there would be no point in turning up.

“But what I like about this team is their mentality. Their mentality is excellent and their quality of football has been exemplary.

“They’ve been exceptional for the club over the last two-and-a-half years and I just want them to carry on in the same vein.”

  13. So the rumour posted early this morning about Brendan wanting to take the entire coaching staff with him appears to be false if we take John Kennedy on his word ?

  14. Looking forward to seeing what Lenny can do with a team that’s had a bit more spent on it than he was ever allowed.

  15. Watched the presser on the BBC website. All questions answered with a straight bat.

Monday after training when Rodgers told John Kennedy he was leaving. Obviously tapped up long before that.

Lenny “might” be in the dugout later, he definitely should be in my opinion.

Just beat the wee Huns Celtic ?

  16. What a sense of humour the football gods have eh?

Tynecastle and Easter rd his first two games in charge, ye couldn’t get much more controversial places for him to go given recent and not so recent events at either venue .

  17. Possible P67 that when BR says “I’ll give my life”, he actually means his soul.

Doable; cos you can’t actually give your life cos you’ll die; but you can regularly sell your soul. Easy for some.

  19. Zack Lister And it all started with this….

So the boy Harry Brady is quite in with the board. Interviewed lawell and interview Rodgers ECT so usually knows a wee bit about what’s going on. He’s been quiet for a while but went on a podcast yesterday and basically said this happened… Rodgers was approached by a Chinese club (remember Chinese league is super rich) and offered 8m signing on plus 10m a season to move there. This was at the VERY start of the window mind when he kept talking about puntin dembele and KT. Apparently he tried to persuade dembele to go with him as well. He then goes to the board and says he wants the job and Desmond and Lawell get him to stay an agree a 2m bonus if he qualified for CL and 4m in shares which would match roughly what’s he was offered as a signing on bonus. They gave him assurances that he would be backed and we sign eddy for 9m. Everything’s fine team playing well and happy days. Lawell then f about with his three priority targets who where mcginn Fabian schar and Christin Pizzini. Pizzini was the priority signing for RB. He doesn’t get signed then they miss mcginn and schar (cb) and Rodgers goes mental cause he’s effectively been betrayed by Lawell. Has that presser before aek and slaughters him because he now knows he’s knocked back China and he’s not getting backed. Then we get pumped out an it’s bye bye to the share issue and bonus and he then isn’t getting backed at all because Lawell etc think he’s gonna walk before the seasons out. So we and up with izzy and mulumbu and only got benkovich because he didn’t make the LC squad. Then dembele goes and in his Lyon presser says Rodgers was a hypocrite because he tried to block his transfer but 2 months ago he was trying to get him to move to China. Rodgers down tools and Lawell looking for his replacement. DD apparently gets them both to a meeting in London mid week and effectively says to them sort this out. To Rodgers he says your in the top 10 highest paid managers in the UK start acting like it because if you don’t he will make him unemployable. To Lawell he says back him in Januray to the fullest of your powers or your finished. Q the St J game and BR has a positive press conference taking full responsibility and Lawell in the crowd. He says he is 99.9% certain that Rodgers will be gone before the end of the season if anyome comes in for him and the board have lined up moyes to replace him. Moyes spotted at Celtics last 2 games. He says he’s found this out mainly through agents and is 100% sure the players know what’s going on so many of them have downed tools because they feel that Rodgers is working his ticket and will abandon ship at the first opportunity.

  21. Maybe if people had seen the 2012 (a great year) ‘Being Liverpool’ documentary, they wouldn’t be too surprised at Rodgers’ incredibly selfish behaviour this week. Apart from the portrait of himself on the wall of his lounge, his tendency to talk about himself in the third person was a bit concerning. And now his penchant for illeism has made plenty of others sick.

As for that empty, betrayed feeling described by posters since the news broke, I sympathise, having suffered from it since March 2013 when Celtic decided that being ‘surprised’ was an appropriate and sufficient response to the ridiculous findings of the LNS commission.

Of course, the powder was just being kept dry, wasn’t it?

I’m actually really pleased that John Kennedy is staying. After all the upheaval surely it’s a good thing to have some continuity?

Brendan had 2 1/2 years where he could have got rid of him if he wasn’t any good. Surely he must have something about him.

I’d probably have let him and Broonie take the reigns until the end of the season, assuming we couldn’t get our permanent target in now.

That makes me think that NL will probably get the gig long-term which I reckon shows a real lack of ambition.

Noticed a few comments mentioning Moyes. Pleas NO! Would rather have Lennon. But surely Moyes is available now? If we wanted him why not just get him in now?

Anyway, let’s get the three points tonight.

  26. lets all do the huddle ? on

“None of us are particularly focussed on Tynecastle tonight”

Wrong Paul, i am. very much so. tonight and saturdays games are huge against very difficult opposition. nothing is higher in my thoughts at the moment, including our managerial situation

    —————————-

“We all know this, so be straight with the people of Leicester.”

Why do you care if he is straight or not with the people of Leicester. BR isnt our problem anymore, get over it and concentrate on the games we need to win

  27. Feel deeply betrayed by BR to state the obvious something stinks a about the haste on which he departed.

Grateful for NL to step up, but totally underwhelmed to be honest.

  28. I’m totally focussed on Hearts.

    Tottenham won’t come calling.

BR’s defensive naivety will be his undoing and I expect him to be papped before the end of next season, when Leicester are perched precariously near the drop zone, and Vardy does to Rogers what Commons did to Ronnie D.

It’s entirely conceivable that Brendan Rogers will never again win a major trophy.

LETS ALL DO THE HUDDLE ? on 27TH FEBRUARY 2019 12:15 PM

I agree, Tynecastle is the focus, it has become even more important now.

Footballers just want to get out onto the pitch.

Lenny will meet the players, Broony will instantly slate his suit and they’ll all have a bit of banter, Lenny will then chat to as many as he can individually (particularly those involved tonight) and everyone will be under no illusions that this is a vital 90 minutes.

    HH

  30. By the way, does anyone know how Shaun Maloney is doing under Martinez as Belgium national team coach? May be a possible candidate in summer?

  31. Jamesgang

When Rodgers’ Liverpool blew it in 2014, Palace, who finished in 11th, conceded less goals (48) than the runners-up (50).

West Ham in 13th conceded 51 and Hull in 16th 53.

  32. IMO,it’s important the players continue to play formation and tactics, we have been up till this point. If NL tries to impose his ideas right now,it could be confusing ……

  33. If Neil is only stop-gap. then who will become our next manager.

    Answers on a postcard please.

Personally, I would appoint Neil full time, but that is only me.

Bottom line, too many secrets from the club, but this is Scotland after all
