Big game for Kolo but Craig will deliver best of the season

231

What’s your hopes for tonight? Primarily I’m hoping to see Celtic play the kind of football we watched on Saturday, a fast, pass and move, game. I want to see Scott Sinclair and Tom Rogic take players on, for Leigh or Moussa to exploit space often denied to them in league games.

I’d also like to see four at the back. Defending in a formation we’re familiar with, even if it takes place 60 yards deeper than usual. This is where we got it wrong at Camp Nou. This Champions League group pits us against some of the greatest attacking footballers money can buy. It’s not a place for fundamental experimentation.

I suspect we’ll see the best Celtic goalkeeping performance of the season tonight. Craig Gordon will have lots to do, concentration will not have an opportunity to drop, decisions are likely to be more clear-cut that he’s been used to.

This is a big game for Kolo Toure. He’s a player who has little to prove to anyone, but that’s different when facing an English TV audience a few months after ending his 14 year term in the country. His performance tonight, and that of Celtic, will reflect on his decision to come to Celtic. Paul Lambert’s best game for Celtic came against Stuttgart in 2003. He also had a huge reputation in Germany, and an audience he wanted to convince he’d made the right move in coming to Celtic. Let’s hope for a similar outcome.

Enjoy the game.

Many thanks for the incredible support for my Great Scottish Run coming up on Sunday, to assist the work of the Foundation. The linked MyDonate account was at £1690 yesterday is right now is £10 off the £2k mark.

We have some special people among us.

  1. I expect City to win by at least 3 clear goals ,and if it were 5 or 6 ,I wouldn’t be surprised.

Aguero to get a hat trick.

This is one of the most expensively built squads in world football.

They should be streets ahead of us.

Let’s hope that we don’t concede another early goal and the crowds can inspire our Bhoys to punch way way above their weight.

Irrespective of the result we are on the right road.

  2. 3 for MC youngsters…. very good run from the MC player… I wonder how many of these players were bought compared with coming through City’s youth system

The problem for Celtic is not just the gulf in money to MC but to the English leagues and the difficulty of Brendan trying to build a team that can treble their wages in the Championship…

Too true mate, makes the art of scouting players vital for us to try and move forward and try and compete..

Playing for the Hoops covers the Celtic Football Club and one of its most beloved players, George McCluskey. The book explores the history of Celtic F.C, also known as The Hoops because of their jersey, and the personal history of McCluskey. By touching upon historic as well as personal events, the book illustrates the ‘Celtic-mindedness’ of the Celtic players and their supporters. George McCluskey is celebrated as the embodiment of the Celtic spirit, and in this book by his personal journey to being one of Celtic’s key players in the ’70s and ’80s is celebrated.

Aidan Donaldson, former teacher and lifelong Celtic supporter, is a native of Belfast who contributed to the Celtic Minded trilogy. A founder of the charity Project Zambia, he has worked tirelessly leading teams of volunteers to the outbacks of Zambia and slums of Lusaka for the past 14 years, building schools, orphanages, sinking wells, creating industry and bringing hope to the marginalised. George McCluskey has been his friend for many years and is patron of Project Zambia.

I agree they are a good squad of creative players.

    But…..

    we are at home.

There is a reason that Barca have beaten us 7:0 and 6:1-

it was at the Nou Camp

Few teams give us a real doing on our own pitch. Juve and PSG won 3:0 , I think but generally, we are more competitive here.

My target for tonight is to score a goal, hopefuly the first.

Even more hopefully, the first of 3.

I was driving up the M6 earlier and stopped at a service station there was a bus full of Man. City supporters they had enough alchol to open a pub but interestingly very few had any colours on show.I then saw a reasonable number of them in Central Glasgow once again very few of them had any colours on what a boreing lot or can they not afford scarfs ? We may not be able to match there spending but we certainly hammer them in passion and colour. H.H.

I remember being at this “glamour” pre-season game in the days when there was a level playing field and we didnae play “friendlies.

Un-biased opinion but we were by far the better team and shoulda won.

    Celtic 0-0 Manchester City (1970-08-04)

    Trivia:

    • 62,700 turn out on a sunny evening at Hampden to watch a fine game despite no goals being scored.

    • Evan Williams (who had played the previous night at Carlisle and been subbed on 77 minutes when he took a knock) was rested on the bench. Billy McNeill was out with a back injury sustained in training. Both Jimmy Johnstone (ankle) and John Hughes (calf) were carrying injuries sustained in the pre-season friendlies in Ireland.

    • Bobby Murdoch, captain in place of McNeill, is fielded in the unusual number 9 shorts.

    • Before the game the controversial City coach Malcolm Allison boasted ‘We’ll beat Celtic because we are a better team.’

    • City keeper Joe Corrigan wore a yellow Queens Park jersey for some unknown reason, probably at the referee’s request after a clash of colours. Also playing fro City was outside left Freddy Hill who had just been bought from Halifax Town for £12,500.

    Review:

Both teams attack and entertain and although Fallon in Celtic’s goal has a fine game, it is City keeper Joe Corrigan who is the best man afield with a string of great saves from the Celtic forwards.

City boasted their legendary forward trio of Bell, Lee and Summerbee although they sat in and defended for the majority of the game.

In the latter stages Celtic pressed for a winner and Lennox had a goal disallowed for hand ball before Corrigan saved from a Wallace shot then Towers blocked the rebound again by Wallace.

Manchester City were one of Europe’s to clubs at this time and the Celtic crowd gave their team a fine ovation at the end as they realised Celtic should have won.
