Billy Dodds nails Rangers on tax

712

Billy Dodds, who was named by the BBC as a beneficiary of Rangers Employee Benefit Trust, wrote in today’s Sunday Herald on the subject.  He alleges Rangers paid him money, which should have been taxed as income, through an EBT.

Dodds wrote, “David Murray came to me and asked if I would receive a payment that was due to me, after tax, through the EBT trust.   And I said that I would.   It was money that was owing to me when I had six months left on my contract and I moved to Dundee United. After the tax was deducted, that money was put in the trust fund.”

What happened to the “tax… deducted” is the crucial question.  Dodds is clear.  This was money due to him through his contract of employment which should have been taxed.  The seriousness of the allegations against Rangers just cranked up a notch – and from a surprising source.

“My point is that Celtic don’t appear to be expect a newco huns to start off in the third division.”

Celtic are not alone. Many people on here hold that view. Personally, I don’t think the Huns will exist in any form next season, although I accept not many will agree with that.

The Huns have at least one chairman at a rival club speaking on their behalf, as well as virtually the entire Scottish media fighting their cause.

It would be naïve of Celtic to assume justice will automatically be done. Celtic can do their part, but the club has to see what others do before they respond.

I don’t know much about recent discussions in the boardroom over New Club and which division it is likely to play in, but I fail to see how the season-ticket renewal could have been any more precise.

For all we know, the whole sorry saga might limp into the new season with Rangers in Administration still in administration. For all we know the SPL computer could, randomly, have Celtic play them before the schools go back. Unlikely, of course, but I thought there was no chance of their being able to complete the season just gone; the numbers didn’t add up, but they still contrived to fulfil their fixtures. The numbers certainly don’t add up for them to survive the summer, but they might.

  17. Voguepunter,

It was a similar story for me. I was in a bar in Amsterdam where the locals don’t have much love for ze germans. I was in the small minority shouting on Dortmund, not only for Paul’s sake but because, where Celtic are not involved, my allegiances will always lie with the underdog

    Tom McLaughlin:

This is not media speculation. I wish it was. I wish I could say this is the press making up quotes, or stories, or trying to be wide. But we now have a senior official in one of the game’s governing bodies telling us the licensing requirements which every club in the land must meet do not really apply.

You don’t think that is appalling, and corrupt? You don’t think that is worthy of a public comment from our club?

The new season is creeping towards us. The reason I keep asking the same question is that The Case for Rangers is already in the public domain, whilst the case against them has been limited to people on here and elsewhere. If you think we can possibly win a PR war that way you’re dead wrong.

The two heads of the SPL, Doncaster and Blair, are now openly, and blatantly, flaunting their own rules. We know full well that Rangers should never be granted a license in a million years; the rulebook purely and simply does not allow it, and nor can you play in the SPL without one. They are willing to ignore that in order to get what they want, and Doncaster has already stated, off the record, (according to RTC, who I believe) that he does not CARE what Rangers have done but wants them in the league.

We are weeks away from the publication of the fixture list. You mark my words, if we remain silent until then and that list is published with Rangers name on it, it’s all over bar the shouting. All over.

This a club which has violated contract rules, has spent millions of pounds in tax payer money, which has, for twenty years, had an unfair and probably illegal financial advantage, a club which has not submitted accounts in 18 months, has gone outside football to the national courts, has put intolerable pressure on an independent committee and is now actively conspiring to dump £100 million of bad debt so it can carry on cheating for the next 20 years.

And yet there is still some debate about what should be done …..

If you are not convinced already that this club can get away with anything, sporting integrity be damned, I don’t know what to say. Left to their own devices, the people running our national game will do nothing. The press will applaud them for it. Rangers will be back in the league. I no longer care whether it is bias, lack of will or bottle or finance trumping fairness … I do not trust these people one bit and they are quite willing to ignore the fans of every club, tear up the rules they don’t like and make up new ones as they go along.

Our club is part of the SPL board. We are the other half of the so-called Big Two, the clubs which are “too big to fail.” Aberdeen, Hibs, Motherwell, Dundee Utd, Inverness, Hearts, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone, Dunfermline, who aren’t even in the league any longer … all have had their say. St Mirren have maintained silence, although swallowing up their club and spitting out the bones was Plan B. I cannot conceive of them being happy with this.

And then there is us. Waiting in the wings for God knows what. For the season tickets to sell out maybe, so they can drop the bombshell on a support which has already put up the money.

There are two possible reasons for the silence.

    1) They are working behind the scenes to stop this.

    2) They are preparing the PR offensive because they either can’t or won’t stop it.

The first possibility would not be harmed by making a statement that they expect the SPL to follow its own rules to the letter. You see, that is what’s truly galling about all of this. Clubs are about to vote on NEW rules … and we do not need the new rules. If the current rules are applied, a NewCo will start in Division 3. The very act of writing these new rules is to supersede those which already exist, and which is followed would maintain the integrity of the game.

And that is already being ignored … and we are taking part in the vote.

    Draw your own conclusions.

If Rangers are included on the fixtures list, it is done. I repeat that again for clarity.

And mate, I am not pissed off at you or any other poster here, who, after all, have different opinions from me on the process but the same opinion on where this should end. I respect all those views.

But we are getting pissed on from a great height, and to paraphrase Sigourney Weaver in Avatar, these people are no longer even trying to kid us that it’s rain.

“Mr Doncaster, do you think for one second that morality has a place in football or sport?”

“Yes, but how far is too far Mr Doncaster?”

“If Rangers players want to camp on the halfway line with automatic weapons then they should be allowed to do that.”

“Mr Doncaster, do you not think that would be damaging to the game?”

You are right. Celtic will never win the PR war and Rangers have virtually everyone with a fragment of influence fighting their corner.

Despite this, the Huns have not moved an inch forward since 14 February. They are neck-deep in quicksand. Celtic have taken a back seat throughout a process in which Rangers have been rescued so many times I’ve lost count. Yet, amid all the bluster they remain in administration awaiting a crippling tax bill, and any reputation they did have is crumbling more with each passing day with further murky revelations expected.

    They are finished.

  30. the long wait is over on

Open question to all – possibly already answered –

Irrespective of the existing rules if RFC go into liquidation and a Newco apply to buy the share which belonged to RFC (but became forfeit to the SPL) what is to stop the SPL agreeing to sell the share to a Newco on whatever it conditions it wants to attach to the sale?

Those conditions could be eg points deductions , transfer embargoes, financial penalties.

Those restrictions are not “penalties ” as such for wrongdoing , merely conditions of sale.
