Billy Dodds nails Rangers on tax

712

Billy Dodds, who was named by the BBC as a beneficiary of Rangers Employee Benefit Trust, wrote in today’s Sunday Herald on the subject.  He alleges Rangers paid him money, which should have been taxed as income, through an EBT.

Dodds wrote, “David Murray came to me and asked if I would receive a payment that was due to me, after tax, through the EBT trust.   And I said that I would.   It was money that was owing to me when I had six months left on my contract and I moved to Dundee United. After the tax was deducted, that money was put in the trust fund.”

What happened to the “tax… deducted” is the crucial question.  Dodds is clear.  This was money due to him through his contract of employment which should have been taxed.  The seriousness of the allegations against Rangers just cranked up a notch – and from a surprising source.

    Long time no post.

Just had to say that every time I read articles elsewhere that attacks my optimism re: the Huns all I have to is wait on another CQN article to top my glass half full up to over flowing again.

    Thank you.

‘It was money that was owing to me when I had six months left on my contract and I moved to Dundee United. After the tax was deducted, that money was put in the trust fund. This was a single payment made when I was leaving the club’.

He says when leaving, not had left, so It could have been anytime in the six months up until he left – it’s not clear when exactly, from his comments. But then he’s not exactly known for clarity and concise comment

If he was confident everything was above board, why would he raise it.

All of that, I got. I just didn’t get why the poster asked the question. My take was that it was a leading question that would point out that Dodds’ payment was not tied to playing (as per SFA rules) but a discretionary payment as per regular EBT. The fact that it was in lieu of the final part of his playing contract suggest otherwise though.

    Just thought it strange.

Just finished reading an interesting book titled “He always puts it to the right”

    – a history of ther penalty kick.”

    A few wee snippets.

The penalty kick was the brainchild of an Irish goalkeeper, Willie McCrum and the change in the law was passed in 1891 at a meetiing in the Alexanadra Hotel in Bath Street.

The penalty shoot out was introduced in 1970 at a FIFA international board meeting in of all places the Caledonian Hotel in Inverness.

In 1945, during a Kilmarnock v Partick Thistle game the Killie left half, White, took a penalty seven times. On each of the first six occasions the referee ordered a re-take and on the seventh attempt the ‘keeper saved it!

In the 1929 Scottish Cup final Rangers were awarded a penalty in the first half.

The previous year they were also awarded a spot kick (no prises for guessing who they were playing).

They missed the one in the ’29 cup final though and lost to Kilmarnock, This was the first penalty miss in a Scottish Cup final.

Perhaps not surprisingly 5 of the first 6 missed penalties in Scottish Cup finals were missed by Rangers players.

    Well woth a read.

  13. Wasn’t using a penalty shoot out to decide matches Celtic’s idea?

  14. Has anyone else noticed the amount of TeamGB blue tops being worn in small villages in the Shires?

I’m assuming that this top now forms part of the hun familiy’s summer wardrobe, and it’s not because there is an actual Olympic event that involves knuckledragging, obese neanderthals.

  15. weeron @ 21:53,

That is a good point and why the Authorities are having difficulties (perceived or real) over the EBTs.

While side contracts may be contrary to HMRC regulations they are definitely illegal in Football terms.

If RFC didn’t pay the Tax on BD’s payment then…

This may not be contrary to Football regulations but it is definitely illegal in Tax terms.

  18. RRC …

Celtic did “protest” that winning by correctly guessing the toss of a coin (v Benfica) was totally unsatisfctory.

However, as early as August 1969, an Israeli Fottball Association member, Michael Almog, had written an article in FIFA News suggesting a penalty shoot out was a fairer way to decide drawn matches.

It had been long felt in football officialdom that there were too many replays and an alterantive had to be found.

I see that there is some current discussion about the merits of the shoot-out.

Another wee gem from that book is that Rangers lost a shoot out to Sporting Lisbon (during their military campaign to Barcelona in 1971/72) but stil progressed.

They won 3-2 at Ibrox and lost 4-3 in Lisbon however the experienced Dutch referee Leo Horn did not know the rules (re away goals) and carried on with the shout out.

It wasn’t until the next day that Rangers were awarded the tie on away goals.

On their way to the CWC final in 1966/67 they beat Zaragosa on the toss of a coin.
