Billy Dodds nails Rangers on tax

712

Billy Dodds, who was named by the BBC as a beneficiary of Rangers Employee Benefit Trust, wrote in today’s Sunday Herald on the subject.  He alleges Rangers paid him money, which should have been taxed as income, through an EBT.

Dodds wrote, “David Murray came to me and asked if I would receive a payment that was due to me, after tax, through the EBT trust.   And I said that I would.   It was money that was owing to me when I had six months left on my contract and I moved to Dundee United. After the tax was deducted, that money was put in the trust fund.”

What happened to the “tax… deducted” is the crucial question.  Dodds is clear.  This was money due to him through his contract of employment which should have been taxed.  The seriousness of the allegations against Rangers just cranked up a notch – and from a surprising source.

    Rangers could be stripped of any tainted titles under league rules, according to Scottish Premier League chief executive Neil Doncaster.

    The SPL are continuing its probe into the administration-hit club’s use of EBTs (Employee Benefit Trusts) and if players were paid outside of the contracts lodged with the authorities.

    Doncaster has admitted that if the case goes against Rangers, the SPL has the option of withdrawing titles the club has won.

    “In any disciplinary investigation we must go through a chain of events. The lawyers investigate and bring a report back to the Board,” Doncaster told Scottish newspaper The Daily Record.

    “If they think there’s a case to answer, the Board must decide how to progress. They can hear it themselves, through a sub-committee or appoint an independent commission.

    Prosecuted

    “If there’s a case which is prosecuted, there could be sanctions if proven. These are unlimited according to the rules.

    “There are 18 different sanctions that can be applied by the SPL.”

    When asked to clarify if one of those options was ‘withdraw or withholding of an award or title’, Doncaster confirmed: “That’s one of the rules.

    “The nub of the issue is our rules say all payments to players must be made within an SPL contract.”

    Speaking with absolutely o knowledge here…….

    If Dodds only ebt payment was his pay-off when leaving, then he would have played no games while having an ebt. That is, if his ebt did not exist while he played for them, then he could not have played a game while having an ebt.

    Or am I wrong??????

    +++++

    A point; do you have one?

    Well….. ‘strange’ as my question may have seemed……

    EBT’s from a tax point of view, will have certain consequences.

    From a football point of view, there are 2 ways of looking at them.

    My first thought was, perhaps ‘2nd contracts’ are not relevant. If you make payments (for playing football) and don’t include these in the contract lodged with the league or sea, then the registration is compromised.

    Then, one would conclude, games played whilst having a compromisedregistration would be open to challenge.

    But then, if the bet payment came about as a ‘parting gift’ as a player was leaving a club……

    It could still fall foul of the taxman;

    It could still fall foul of the football authorities;

    But…..what games would be open to challenge? If it didn’t exist when those games were played, could they still be challenged?

    That was my point. Sorry it sounded strange to you. This could in fact apply to Juninho.

    Anybody got some flagpoles going cheap, we are going to need them.

    Maybe we should get the Lisbon Lions to unfurl the flag – one each.

    Borussia Moenchengladbach beat them 7-1,and as yu say,UEFA overturned it.

    IIRC,the bottle came from the Inter section!

    As always a mine of information, Cheers :-)

    I heard a radio report regarding changing away from a penalty shoot out

    Aye but sadly the Rapid Vienna bottle came from the jungle. most stupid thing I ever witnessed from a Celtic supporter.

    Gordon : sounds like a good read. Who is the author? I will look it out.

    I guess rfc in administration would feature heavily in any book about penalty kicks.

    Didn’t the Milan player get hit by a coke can? An early example of commercial influence on football.

  10. Paddy Gallagher on

    One of my unpopular thoughts, no more penalty shoot outs, instead count the corners won hence rewarding the attacking team.

    In the late 40s early 50s we won the charity cup after a 0 0 draw with queens park due to “a corner cleverly won by John mcphail”.

    I believe that was Jock Stein’s original preference on how to decide it.

    Thing is,every method has it’s downside,but some more than others.

    I just don’t like penalties,MAINLY BECAUSE WE ARE RUBBISH AT THEM.

    I genuinely can’t remember the last time I was brave enough to watch one.

    Even Henrik missed a fair few…..

    Didn’t know that thanks, but if instead of penalties the team with the most corners won went through it would encourage attacking football and penalise the park the bus brigade.

    Doncaster would do ANYTHING to keep Hins in SPL .. Stripping titles whilst 100% correct is the beginning of a sop to keep Huns in SPL in some shape or form.. Although time is running out 100% of player ‘s contracted wages due this Friday?

    In all seriousness, minutes to go at 1-1 and four corners each and you win a corner – celebrations like a goal in the Celtic end, entertainment.is the name of the game.

  24. Philvisreturns @ 16.43,

    They’ve also introduced completely pointless landlord registration (when what’s needed is a register of tenants) & hung on to the Home Report – abandoned in England – which forces sellers to pay aroung £1K for a semi-literate screed which they could easily have bettered themselves. Had Scotland been independent rather than devolved, the meddling classes would have had more important matters to occupy them. Re alcohol pricing, this is of course a mere. gesture, a substitute fo ractually doing anything about Scotland’s problems. I have to point out, tho’ that the Irish Republic “banned” smoking before Scotland & brought in a tax on plastic bags several years ago.
