Biton and the holding position

678

I was discussing Beram Kayal during the week, specifically how he was keeping Victor Wanyama out of the Celtic team before that ‘tackle’ from Rangers’ McCulloch put him out of action for months.  The player has never recovered his form but has never had a sustained run in the team either.

Nir Biton has made the holding position his own in recent weeks and, as a consequence, we’ve watched his form improve.  News that he picked up an injury when playing for Israel against Slovakia last week, which is likely to disrupt his appearances for weeks, has come at the worst possible time.  If he is to make this position his own, he needs performances between now and the end of the season.

Young players especially need games to reinforce their craft and build confidence, as well as to ensure fitness.

Seville, The Celtic Movement, launches tomorrow (rumours suggest I might get my hands on mine today).

“”Claire, where is my passport?” I was frantic now as I pleaded with my wife. She must know I thought. Claire, my wife of twelve years, suffers my trips away to support Celtic without a single moan. Not this time though as Claire would not give me her blessing to go on this trip telling me that our bakery was now at critical point, busy and with too many European away days this year they had taken their toll.”

  1. In the paper I read most days, they do a great wee historical piece where they publish letters to the editor written many years ago. Recently one letter wrote in 1943 queried why so many young orangemen were parading through Catholic areas in Belfast proclaiming loyalty to the crown instead of serving in their King’s army fighting Hitler.

Most loyalists are either embarrassed by their grandfather’s army dodging or are blissfully unaware of it, per head, the north of Ireland contributed very little to the war effort in terms of fighting men – they were too busy showing the ‘taigs’ who was boss to bother with Hitler.

David Tennant reveals his personal torment

Doctor Who actor David Tennant revealed that he contemplated pulling out of the BBC programme “Who do you think you are’, when he discovered some orange skeletons in his family cupboard.

The jocular, pleasant Scotsman (real name David McDonald) expressed his disgust at learning that relatives on his father’s side were prominent loyalists and were actively involved in election fraud and gerrymandering in the Derry of the nineteen twenties and thirties.

Tennant who quite engagingly describes himself as a “hand wringing, Guardian reading liberal”, found it difficult to come to terms with his family shame.

“As a young man, I found my Granny Nellie’s anti-Catholic comments as being the result of her insular, parrochial Northern Ireland background. I thought she meant no harm, and it was just her way”.

However, Tennant’s personal voyage of self discovery brought him to the mean streets of Loyalist Derry. On a personal level he found his second cousin Harry Blair a charming and intelligent man, however his political views left a lot to be desired.

“When Harry handed me my grandfather’s orange sash, I felt that I had been handed a turd. To me, the Orange Order represents everything that is obnoxious in society. I have always associated Orangemen with right wing racism and sectarianism”.

Astonishingly, the last part of his trip to Derry brought him into contact with an unknown Catholic cousin Barry McGlaughlin a prominent official at Derry football club for whom Tennant’s Scottish grandfather once played.

Tennant listened intently while McGlaughlin explained in graphic detail the atrocity of Bloody Sunday, which he witnessed as a young man.

“I found it deeply moving and have undegone the whole gambit of emotions since I undertook this personal Odyssey. I was in despair until I met Barry McGlaughlin, he more than anybody else restored my faith in humanity”.

Might I suggest you learn a little about a subject before you pontificate.

    —————————————————————————————————————–

    As usual.

    The inevitable little insult.

I made no comment about individual Irishmen who to their eternal credit fought against fascism.

My comments were directed solely at the De Valera`s govt. which declared it`s neutrality.

What more do you have to learn about that fact?

De Valera`s govt.extends it`s condolences to the German govt. on the death of Hitler.

What more do you have to learn about that fact?

In the meantime,C.Q.N.bloggers insult Churchill and his memory.

The vast majority of the “free world” reveres Churchill.

He led the fight against Hitler`s criminals.

    Ireland sat on the fence.

De Valera`s govt.expressed their condolences to the German legation in Dublin on the death of Hitler.

As I said ” eternal shame.”

You are aware that the I.R.A.attempted to assist a German invasion of N.I.?

Against the wishes of the Irish govt.

The point I was making was the distorted view of history based on ideology.

Brit bashing.Often from people who choose to live there.

Germany abandoned plans to invade Britain (Op. Sealion) soon after the Battle of Britain.Hitler`s priority was the Soviet Union. Not Britain and certainly not Ireland.

    ——-

Not strictly true that though is it.

O’Duffy rose quickly to Chief of Staff with the IRA, however, his support of fascism and Nazism was not supported by most other members of the organisation or indeed the general population.

His right wing fanaticism eventually led to his removal from membership of the IRA by rank and file volunteers.

    True or false?

  23. Tried to post earlier. You gotta keep the faith Corkcelt. Anyone who uses the Independant to substantiate a point on Ireland has already lost the argument. The Indep is as neutral on things Irish as the DR is on Celtic related topics. Consistently took its cue from the west Brit Tony O Reilly and has not deviated since. It’s reporting during the hunger strikes was toxic. Consistently gives a platform to Ruth fudley Dudley Edwards and Eoghan Harris who is to political journalism what big fat DJ is to sports journalism.

People who use “opinion pieces” from the Indep to back up points made use them like a drunk uses a lamp post “for support not illumination”.
