…fair play…that was a strong result which boosted …their self belief for the run-in.

    ——-

    Was talking about that.

Strange thing was they came off the back of last week’s “world class” win and then dropped points away to Dundee Utd. Maybe nothing in it, but interested to see now how / if the extra games kick in.

Could be one way or the other – confidence boost or tired legs.

Personally – from a Celtic perspective – I wanted us to go through. However, having gone out, the pragmatic “…extra time to recover and get good coaching in…” kicks in.

Also speaking tonight about the fact we won nothing in the Seville Season – domestic form possibly having been impacted by our European heroics.

Pros and cons I suppose – I hope they get cuffed in the next round, though :-))

I always take a great delight in them getting cuffed and, If they win, try to find a downside for them in their success.

That said, I never watch them on tv and wouldn’t set foot inside ipox.

  3. WEEBGFC

Yep. I think no Euro distractions can work well on the home front; am not sure how much money is to be gained from any conference run…mibby gate receipts are critical oxygen for some distressed teams ;)

Murderwell might not be the easiest game after a sapping win.

Let’s hope we’re primed for the bounceback v the Hibees.

  4. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

It’s still all about the league. Win the next 3 matches and we will be in great shape. However, I worry about this prolonged dip in form. That’s 5 matches now.

  5. GARYGILLESPIESHAMSTRING / QUADROPHENIAN

    Yup.

In essence – up the Celts!!!

  6. PETERLATCHFORDSBELLY – agree with that too – we have been a bit under the weather.

I’m hopeful the reducion in midweek games will help with that.

  7. The only thing to learn from last night is a bit of humility/realism – what is good enough for the SPFL is nowhere good enough for even the lower reaches of Europe. It is here that weaknesses will be found out big time.

  8. It took us until June to clear our the carnage in our club. We are 50% sorted through a professional manager and CEO ( i have a recommendation through an ex colleague for him).

    Disappointing tonight but not unexpected

Our lead in the league and a trophy in the cabinet IS unexpected

    Onwards and upwards

  9. Couldn’t catch the game live tonight due to other commitments so I stayed up to watch the highlights at double speed playback as I thought I should suffer like a of you did.

Amazing how much unthreatening possession we had and how rarely we tried a speculative attack or shot.

In a game we lost 2:0, I thought the front men did well on limited feed- Forrest, Maeda and, especially, Abada.

I felt sorry for Scales and Welsh who looked ring rusty as they did not have the game minutes they should have received with squad rotation and substitution.

Very disappointed in both results earlier but the Ibrox club will take great heart from their 2 European legs and we will now have to knock that confidence out of them again by not blinking on Sunday.

    Good Night all

  10. I really hope this ‘Prioritize the league’ mantra does not come back to bite us in the arse at Easter Road on Sunday. I would think that Hart, Juranovic, CCV, Taylor, Hatate, McGregor, Abada, Giamoukakis, Jota are stick ons to start. Starfelt probably so, although he had a very poor game. That’s 10. The 11th will likely be O’Riley or Rogic, although both were anonymous. I have assumed 4-3-3. I am reasonably confident we will bounce back.

The Huns 4-4-2 was effective in both Dortmund games, hitting the Bundesliga 2nd team for 6. They played their strongest team both times, so we’ll see if not prioritizing the Motherwell game works out for them.

  11. Crucial week ahead for Celtic in terms of this league title. If we bag 9 points I think we’ll have one hand on that league trophy. I’ve already forgotten about Bodo. I hope the players do as well. I’m confident we’ll be focused for Hibs.

  12. Well that was a quick readback. Went to bed after Celtic game, wakened up to find CQN had morphed into the follow follow website.

If the currants were 2 down I would maybe watch their game but 90 minutes ffs.

Onto the Hibees now, think we have learned that O Riley and Rogic are not our midfield duo. How about Antony Ralston in midfield for a bit of dig and Juranovic/Taylor for full backs.

    In Ange we Trust csc

  13. It’s relatively easy for me to passover last nights game and move on.

However, there remains the memory of losing 7 goals in the last 3 games or 9 in the last 5.

There is work to be done.

That we are the second best glasgow team in european terms, is a consideration for another day.

    Absolute priority remains the league.

We are on a journey. There is still a fair amount to go

  14. Considering the level of Scottish football, it is no great surprise that the champions of Norway should knock out our runners-up. It is a big surprise that the acknowledged No2 team in the Bundesliga is beaten so comprehensively by the Scottish champions.

However the real story is the way in which the outcome of both ties was decided, not just the end results.

Both victors, Bodo and *Rangers were good examples of synergy, whereby the whole(the team) can perform at a higher level than the sum of its parts(the players).

The conundrum is that only a few short weeks ago a Celtic team ‘wiped the floor’ with *Rangers at Celtic Park.

Our first-half in Bodo last night was frightening and excruciating to watch. We were like ‘rabbits in the headlights’ and could have been five down at the interval. In the second-half the game was more even and we created three decent chances, just like Bodo had done in the first-leg – the difference being that the Norwegians clinically converted theirs and we simply wasted ours.

In both games we played ‘off the cuff’ – a team of individuals against a well-oiled, & well-drilled outfit, who had ‘done their homework’, figured us out, and carried out their job ‘to the letter’.

It remains to be seen what effect the outcome and manner of performance in this European tie may have on the domestic front in the race for the title.

  15. PHILBHOY on 24TH FEBRUARY 2022 7:54 PM

Getting beat 5-1 in the Champions League, painful though it is, I can just about live with.

To lose 5-1 to a Norwegian club in Europe’s third tier competition is embarrassing.

We might be good enough for the SPL but…………………..

The worry for me is that AP is not learning from Celtic experiences or that we are a physically small team.

Please don’t tell me Barcelona were all wee.

We don’t have Barcelona quality players in our team. FACT.

    No happy

    ————————–

OK then, what dwarf are you ????????.

    Only kidding.

A defeat of this magnitude is never good.

Until we drew Bodo / Glimt I had never really heard of them. We must be able to compete outwith our own wee bubble as well as domestically.

    Cheers and HH.

  16. BELMONT BRIAN from last night.

Agree, it would be great if our only problems were football related.

I’m praying for the people of Ukraine.

    God help them.

  17. PHILBHOY on 25TH FEBRUARY 2022 8:19 AM

If they don’t win the league, I’d expect their team to look significantly different next year. Players are coming to the end of contracts and one or two of their bigger players might be sold.

I think they probably gambled and put their chips on beating Malmo and winning the league.

  18. PHILBHOY on 25TH FEBRUARY 2022 8:23 AM

Bielsa’s teams also have a habit of burning out at the business end. Last year was a bit of an outlier maybe due to momentum and others dropping points around them but they’re paying for it this season – with interest.

  19. Head’s melted this morning.

I recognise that we have come a long way under Ange but bhoy oh bhoy were those 2 legs an absolute humbling.

If that was a trial for a few players surviving the summer, I’d pass on quite a few. Can’t play the controlled passing game that Ange won’t deviate from. If he won’t change (and he won’t) then we need more player upgrades than we probably thought a few weeks ago. Some ole legends of ours need gracefully sent on their way too.

  20. Lesson from last night — never tell an immature squad that a games doesn’t matter.

The team we put out shouted from the rooftops that our thoughts were elsewhere.

The team responded as expected — went through the motions.

Second goal — CMcG took the time to explain what everybody else had done wrong.

Nothing about why he jogged back leaving a scorer sized hole in our defence.

AP still has L plates on regarding league / cup football in Europe.

He desperately needs to bring in support that he can trust.

The bus shelter crew were never up to it in the first place.

Heaven knows what happens next — what we have isn’t good enough / what we have in reserve needs punted.

We look over coached — people too scared to think on their feet within the game.

We have no energy — too much I fear is left on the training ground.

LS gets into a position to put in a cross — every time he turns back.

When he first managed to get on the park he was making the crosses.

  21. The SPL is a self sustaining bubble for journeymen.

Players from the Juniors who want full time football.

We used to laugh at the sheep being pumped by teams from parts of the EU that VP can’t find.

Now we are the laughing stock.

45 minutes of good football in 6 weeks and yet still they clap.

  22. I’m a bit disappointed – but overall glad that’s done. We played a wee bit better in the second half…………

Hope no reports of injuries emanate from the frozen north…………

On the huns, – I’m a wee bit confused…………..halfway thru the game Shorties hun trumpets basically admitted they were gash an’ Dortmund could take as many off thems as they wanted………

the huns had been found out basically…… then something happened. Dortmund stopped. The treat stopped.

Read the guff and some o’ the sleekitry here and it might sound they were wurld beaters……………

Sorry, can’t have it both ways.

    HHH.

  23. I see the pretend Chic Young- types – going for the “over-coaching” angle……………

    Oh aye………….

    .

  24. Celtic have played Hibs 3 times this season:

    Hibs 1-3 Celtic

    Hibs 1-2 Celtic LC Final

    Celtic 2-0 Hibs

    Aggregate 7-2

Hibs league for has been pretty dire in recent weeks.

    Bring it on.

  25. I see uefa are allowing all football clubs and players to show solidarity with Ukraine this weekend by allowing them to wear/display Ukraine flags.

Does that mean we get all our fines back for showing solidarity with Palestine?

  26. Last night we could not cope with a team that was reasonably good on the ball, physically strong and fit, it is the same old same old year after year, if we play a team from a so called lower league they will be fit strong and possibly have some technically good players, qualifiers are a lottery you are playing unknown entities, last night’s game was against a known entity and the squad failed. Again the squad failed it isnt good enough to have tanner baw players against 6’2″ wingers its a physical mismatch a weak point exploited by opposition managers regularly, and some of our team were slow and unfit, the midfield in particular was a shambles and nothing stuck unfront, some guys dug in others didnt fancy it, the manager has to sort this and rid the club of the hand clappers but who chuck it in a match.

  27. PHILBHOY on 25TH FEBRUARY 2022 8:19 AM

If we win the league who would bet against the manky mob getting through the qualifiers?

    —-

    Malmo ?

  28. It would do more good for UEFA to show an example ban Russian sponsorship, their Club Teams and their National Team from all UEFA competitions until Ukraine is allowed its freedom from Moscow, not as they have in Belarus, free to chose and make their own decisions.

  29. Long time lurker but prompted to post today. I wanted us to go through against Bodo but I did think it was a big ask after being defeated last week. When I saw the team last night I was pleased that Ange seemed to have the Hibs game in mind (the league is everything) and I naively thought they still might have enough to go through. Clearly we weren’t good enough. However I really am not that bothered about being pumped out of the Conference League , I am more delighted that we didn’t suffer any injuries and are in a healthy position to have a good go at winning the league, maybe even another treble. As far as Rangers go , there is no argument , they have done better in europe than us recently , so what , up them.

    COYBIG

  30. TFOD2.1 game — saw the first 40 minutes.

BD were a class above them but looked a bit brittle in defence.

Better finishing and it would have been 4-2 to the good guys.

Second half — not sure why BD should fall off a cliff.

Was it a fall or did the TFOD2.1 improve?

Team talk from the little one to spur the hoards on?

Drug testing regime understood and accommodated?

One thing — BD have bigger fish to fry that the EuL.

TFOD2.1 — on the other hand — are skint and needed to win the game for the opportunity of another home game. Totally skint so winning last nigh was everything.

And then you have the Bookies angle — did they make money last night?

Half time / full time scores / result?

BD are in the mix in the BL — Had a poor CL campaign.

    Consequently not world beaters.

The Euro results of the TFOD2.1 are galling in the extreme however.

Really show up our Small town boy / Bronski attitude for what it is — pure laziness.

  31. TMcL @ 9.31

    Very fair point.

I was struck by the efforts of the BBC last night to show the suffering and the angst of the Ukrainian people as they were under a sustained attack from a more powerful neighbour.

Struck at how it was being treated in comparison to how they handle the plight of the people in Gaza when their more powerful neighbour delivers one of its regular invasions / punishment beatings to a helpless and hopeless population.

Settler calculus — you kill one of us / we kill 100 of you.

It used to be 100 might be 1000 now.

Total blockades — Warsaw Ghetto vs Gaza — Discuss?

  32. If Ange is going to continue with his philosophy.

We are going to need another load of players in the summer.

As at the moment , we don’t even have 11 good enough.

  33. We fell short to a team who have at least 2 seasons practicing their more modern football style and tactics. They beat a team with a bigger budget and they have done it before. They will reach a ceiling but good luck to them.

It’s a good thing, we are only 7/8 minths into Ange-ball (clearly the players have embraced the style and enjoy the tough training) so if we carry on progressing we can maybe have a go at the alleged bigger fish next year, and the year after that….😉🍀
