Brendan Rodgers appointed Celtic manager

1136

Brendan Rodgers today became the 18th manager in Celtic’s history. Rodgers, 43, managed Liverpool for three years until October, after guiding Swansea to the English (and Welsh) Premier League in 2011. He previously managed Reading and Watford.

His appointment is unquestionably the most popular since the arrival of fellow Irishman, Martin O’Neill, 16 years ago. Known for his belief in playing attacking, possession-based football, he will bring a force of personality to the club and to Scottish football.

Rodgers occupied the top position on Celtic’s wanted list at the start of the month, but the desire to sign him up was tempered by the belief that attracting a manager of such a profile to Scotland would be difficult. My understanding is that as soon as talks got underway in earnest, it was clear neither party would let the opportunity slip away.

I’m delighted at the appointment. The club already feels reinvigorated.

Welcome to Celtic, Brendan. Let’s get on with the job.

For those, and there are plenty, on here, whose raison d’etre is the denigration of Peter Lawwell, Dermot and the board; those who accuse PL of ‘signing’ players, accuse Ronny of being economical with the truth when he said that he had personally approved all incoming players – then please have a look at this:

    Ring any bells?????

    ——–

Seems like he was let down at Liverpool. The recruitment system failed him. In the season after they finished 2nd, Suarez left, Sturridge, Flanagan and Henderson were all injured for large parts, Sterling has his head up his backside and Gerrard was on his swansong.

    Suarez on Rodgers….

“Such a big part of my education is down to him and his management.

“Of course, he works to make the team stronger, but he really works on a one-to-one level with the players.

“He will sit down with each player at the club and work on where you can improve, where you can exploit opposition. He leaves nothing to chance.

“He is a very intelligent man. If the players at his next club listen to his words, they will become better players for sure.”

He added: “When Brendan was appointed, I was excited. I had actually spoken to him in Spanish when he was still at Swansea. I thought that was a good touch.unspecified-1

“He was familiar with the Spanish way of playing, as he’d studied there. He was very clever and told me that Liverpool would play possession football, as it would suit me.

“Brendan helped me with my runs, arriving in the area at the right time and coming in from wide, which benefited my confidence.

“We worked hard on finding ways I could isolate players and then try to beat them, man on man. That was the only way I could succeed in England.

“If you punt a long ball up towards me and one of these Premier League defenders, I am not going to win it.

“But the way Liverpool played, with the ball on the floor, and being released very fast to my feet, gave me a chance against the big guys.

“I wasn’t proven and I had to adapt to the Premier League, which Brendan knew. He knows all about English football and he educated me to become successful.”

*when PLG was unveiled he announced that he liked tae take over a team down on it’s luck and make them great again. I thought what a parcel of scheidt, PLG actually inherited a good team, prior tae that he hudnae done much, and husnae since. Dermot hired a Dublin based recruitment company headed by a savvy lady for manager. PL had no say & Dermot is paying 48% of Rodgers wages!
