Broomloan brilliance, hopeless imposter

389

Just catching up on the post-Ibrox analysis after a busy weekend. A few observations:

Celtic opened very well but our passing out of defence fell apart after 10 minutes and didn’t get back on track until Scott Sinclair decided he was taking control at halftime. If I wanted to make an excuse, I’d say we were rusty due to the formation only just returning to normal for the first time this season, but this may be over-generous.

Scott demonstrated why he was Player of the Year last season. He has what it takes to swing big games. The game can be divided into two parts: times when Sinclair had the ball inside the Newco box, and all other times. You could sense the terror in blue at the former.

On the Newco penalty claim: I’m not sure. Jozo pulled out of the challenge, which I suspect is why the referee didn’t give it, but I would have claimed if it was the other way around.

It was clear to everyone in the Broomloan Stand that Leigh Griffith was claiming for a penalty in the first half, although none of us knew why. Young Beckenbauer in the Newco defence extended his arms and made his body big as the ball dropped onto his hand.

The rules are clear on this one, allow your arms to leave the confines of your body and you’ve transgressed if the ball strikes a hand or arm. Sky Television viewers were then transported to an alternate universe, where they were told, “Leigh Griffiths is claiming for a corner kick”. There is an intellectual pain experienced when you are part of a group treated to ‘expert’ analysis like this. I was embarrassed as a viewer.

While Scott Sinclair was the custard in your doughnut, the second goal was a product of crisp passing down the right. Callum McGregor was worthy of an honourable mention here. He has the craft to compliment Patrick Roberts’ level of astonishing-ness.

There will be quite a number of people who are walking around Lennoxtown today full of the joys because of the save Craig Gordon made with the score at 0-1. This was not a normal reaction save, it was the result of a planned and practiced manner in which to close-down an opponent who is about to head the ball. Look again at how Craig moves his body.

It was a big moment and speaks of the technical preparation of the goalkeepers.

Scott Brown remains is in the form of his life. He waltzed around Ibrox like he owned the place. Although with the alleged condition of the structure, that honour may be an onerous one.

The knives are out for Brother Pedro, who spent millions but has not noticeably improved his team. This is a little unfair. Newco’s problems run deeper than Pedro, and let’s face it, they would be in a far worse situation if he had not banned green boots.

This guy knows what he’s doing, no way is he an hopeless imposter, no way at all. And, if they ever score an important goal, Pedro’s instructions to congregate to celebration will also prove invaluable.

Let’s not get too carried away with ourselves. Ibrox was the aperitif, as they say in Europe. The main course is in Brussels on Wednesday, and that will prove to be a far greater challenge.

Sorry to hear of your Dad having a stroke. My dad had his first of several heart attacks the night of Henriks testimonial game. Luckily my mum and myself returned from the game in time. He was with us for a fair few years after that and although incapacitated in various ways always greeted the day and everyone with a smile.

Hope your dad can make a recovery that allows him and those around him to smile.

    Big Jimmy,

Didn’t think any of the lions got more than 30 caps, memory tells me Big Billy only got 29. Bobby Murdoch possibly the best player I ever saw in a Celtic shirt, got something like 12 international caps. As I say could be wrong, memory beginning to fade, but one of the reasons I can’t get interested in current international games.

  5. Paris Saint Germain have denied reports that striker Edinson Cavani was offered €1 million to hand over penalty responsibilities to Neymar .

Reports in France claimed that PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi was forced to intervene in the ongoing spat between the two players, who clashed during the club’s 2-0 league victory over Lyon last week.

The mega-rich Ligue 1 side thumped Celtic 5-0 in their opening Champions League group game but after things took a sour turn between Cavani and Neymar it was alleged that Al-Khelaifi appealed to the Uruguayan to give up his duties with a six-figure sweetener into the bargain – as reported by the Mirror.

Neymar and Edinson Cavani allegedly fell out over who would be on penalty duties for the Paris side

But the claims have been rejected by the French giants, with newspaper L’Equipe tweeting: “PSG have formally denied information suggesting Cavani might give up penalties in exchange for the automatic payment of a bonus.”

Neymar was missing as PSG fired a blank in the 0-0 draw at Montpellier on Saturday, six days on from the South American squabbles that overshadowed a victory over Lyon at the Parc des Princes.

Cavani refused to hand over the ball to Neymar during that success when Les Parisiens were awarded a spot-kick.

“Your secondary point about not giving it too tight to sevconian workmates etc, I cannot agree with. ”

I don’t think that was my secondary pointas it would come very far down my list of priorities. Give it to them as much as you want! After all, you are more likely to find a Sevconian workmate in this part of the world than an Aberdeen one.

But, for the moment, a win over Aberdeen does much more to secure our next league title than those 3 points at Ibrox do. I want us to feel more joy when we beat our genune “current” rivals than when we beat our erstwhile, ersatz “currant” rivals.

There can be few Celts around who feel that Saturday’s result was vital in winning this league, but there once was a time when a win at Ibrox was a hard won event.

Don’t get me wrong- maybe Sevco will recover and become our main rivals- if so we should treat all games against them as ultra-important in winning the league. But at the moment, we get more joy from lording it over them than their status as challengers merits.

They will get another draw or, heaven help us, a win against us sometime this or next season. We have to be ready for that without feeling despair or wanting to get rid of the manager or player. We cannot keep winnning every domestic game (and I know I said that last year) but the management and players expect us to drop points and, possibly, lose a domestic match this year. They are hard headed realists even though they will do all they can to prevent that happening for as long as possible.

A draw in Brussels will please me more than last Saturday when we beat a team currently operating at a level between Motherwell and Hibs.

We are moving towards a situation where the hun club are no longer relevant to Celtic. They don’t pose any kind of threat, on or off the field, now or in the foreseeable future.

If the current trajectory continues then it should mean that the hun support will mean less and less to Celtic fans, and the fixture will mean no more and no less than any other domestic tie.

Anyone who wouldn’t welcome that is an Old Firm Fan rather than a Celtic fan.

  15. For any of the Bhoys heading to Brussels, hope you enjoy your trip, and, stay safe.

Anyone going to Paris on 22nd November ? I might be able to lay my hands on a couple of tickets, but nothing confirmed yet……anyone interested ? I’m not going to be able to go, but if i can get the tickets, they’d be available at face value – somewhere around 48 Euro’s i think.

  16. Turkeybhoy…and does anyone really believe Griff cleared his nostrils on that blue piece of whatever or on the corner flag? It was a wind up, maybe not to everyone’s taste but a wind up none the less….Oh! I want to be offended…

  17. The longer king , Pedro , Jabba etc are involved with sevco the longer we will have to suffer our club , players, fans etc being dragged into controversies. On the other hand the longer they are there the further away we get from them.

As others have made the point, how can you avoid action for something that didn’t happen?

  25. Jim bob agree 100% Barrowford should be upgraded.

Would love to see a 1500 seater stand with good player and supporter facilities inbuilt (UNDER GAMES/ LADIES) alongside three training parks and associated parking that could be used for match day and help fund upkeep.

All under age groups could train and play games there and it could be used as part of the overall celtic park experience with regards tourists/ visitors given its close proximity to celtic park etc…

Barrowfield is part of our history and an upgrade would be a fitting tribute to the players who have came through the academy as well as the greatest team we ever produced the Lions.

  26. Delight in beating the produce of an old Rangers cannot be the same, as beating the previous existence but it won’t stop everyone in the Celtic support feeling that it’s pretty similar.

When its become a case of how many and not how often we know the fixture is already deady, and thems must accept that taking part and £49.00 from Celtic fans all for our pleasure is all they have, and as good as it gets.

Mocking shouldn’t be confused with hatred of * Rangers * otherwise we’d be the same as them, and we are aware of how unhealthy that is. Sevco, *Rangers *, whatever they are called all just the people that backed the wrong club, not once but twice and its all just downright carelessness.

It will always be like this now because they can’t alter what happened to their clubs.

Leigh Griffiths pretends to blow his nose on a corner flag – it’s a disgrace, inciting the fans, should be brought into line by the manager (according to pricks like Tom English)

NFL calls Jim Goodwin a fanny – gets a 3 match ban.

Pedro squares up to the Celtic captain and defence coach at half time – no comment from press.

SFA wait over 50 years to recognise the best team Scotland has ever produced – no comment from press

You get the picture. The SFA is a bunch of huns having to pretend to be something else. However – their behaviour over the long term tells you all you need to know. The Scottish press are a joke and have papers to sell so will say anything they’re told to say.

Meanwhile – Celtic cruise on, despite the huns and even the trolls on here telling us we’re mugs. People who are never Celtic fans in a million years – their contempt for us is as bad as the SFA, Press and Scottish “government”.
