Brown and Lustig with international and Champions League conflicts

848

A year ago you and I discussed Scott Brown’s fitness with some concern for the season ahead. Since then the captain has not skipped a beat, his form and availability for selection have been without question.

It is clear he can cope with a Scotland game this weekend, and no doubt finish the season untroubled, but Scotland have an international against England on 10 June, two weeks after the Scottish Cup final, and four weeks before Celtic’s Champions League qualification campaign gets underway.

If Scott is to participate in all games, he will have a week off after the Scottish Cup final before being called into the Scotland squad, then two weeks before Celtic’s preseason training starts. For a player of his age, with his injury profile, this schedule would not allow sufficient recuperation ahead of a new season.

Selfishly, the most important thing to you and I, and to Celtic, is Champions League qualification, more so than the Scottish Cup, or than a season of invincibility, delightful, though both would be. What Brendan Rodgers backroom team need to do is prepare Scott as thoroughly as possible for the middle of July. Planning should start now.

If there’s another player in the Celtic squad who I would also like to ration his football it’s Mikael Lustig. The Sweden international is likely to be involved in both their international squad in June; a World Cup qualifier against France and a derby against Norway.

If Scotland fail to get a positive result against Slovenia on Sunday, Scott might consider it best to retire from the international stage, again. He and Mikael could do with a few weeks on the beach at the end of the season.

  1. Dembele knocking back 65k/wk rising to 100k/wk, is this a load of guff?

Hopefully not, Dembele has made great decisions in his short time we’ve had him here, on and off the pitch. Going to Chelsea or Man City to sit on the subs bench at best, or worse, discarded on loan to a team who’s style of play doesn’t suit him.

Celtic dumped a 40 goal striker to build their team around Dembele and he has recognised so far, that this wouldn’t happen in many other sides offering him a similar profile.

That said, £3.5 million a year for x years guaranteed would be plenty enough for the vast majority of 20yo to forget about their footballing ambitions and concentrate on their partying ambitions instead.

    GREENPINATA,

The terrible injury resulting from that tackle should be a timely reminder to Celtic as to what can result from an overly aggressive style of play.

With a semi final coming up against a team who got away with a few dangerous tackles and during a season we have seen an increasingly agricultural style employed against us I hope our club are highlighting these concerns with the relevant parties.

The current interpretation of the laws of the game are intended to protect players from serious injury.

Tobago… you get tickets for TFC this year? We are at the sporting game on the 31st.. if you are there, it would be nice to finally meet up.

  9. Having read Parkheadcumsalford’s account of the pre-Lenten festivities in Holland, I was reminded of similar events during my four years in Belgium. I can only speak for the Flemish part of the country when I remember Carnival. Lorries with loads of free Stella Artois driving behind all the street revelers. They do know how to celebrate goods moments in the calendar year.

You are spot on there, and getting away with them presents their only hope. Dele Alli has just been suspended for three European games by UEFA after being red carded against Gent. There were three ‘tackles’ by Ayebroke players against Celtic which were on a par with Alli’s challenge, and not one red card between them.

I prefer to speak in King David’s English when addressing my public. But thank you for your kind and considered words. Words that obviously are not as perfectly orated as best they could be considering the second rate supporter that you and your like on here are.

And remember for future reference when addressing I you will bow in awe at I’s superiority.

Fantastic analysis and summation once again in your blog post.

I attempted to leave the above comment on your site, but was blocked as “suspected BOT” :-)

You should have a wee word in Paul and Winning Captains ear of how to “moneyterize” your blog. Even if it’s just an interest, you might as well make some beer money out of your efforts.

  15. Embdae else think oor Moussa has his sights set solely on Real Madrid?

ZZ seems to be taking an undue interest in him, and publicly offering advice, all of which has been respectful of Celtic.

Perhaps this is why Moussa is enjoying his time with us. He is developing in a league that offers him the physical challenges to strengthen both physically and mentally. He certainly doesn’t seem all that taken by English interest certainly.

The latter part of the week has been taken up with a family bereavement and I am not long in from a funeral which took place at St Stephen’s down in my father’s adopted hometown village of Dalmuir West!

Many e-mails to catch up on re Lisbon and associated matters.

I will get to them all over the next couple of days.

Connaire – if you are tuning in I have your message and will make the appropriate arrangements and will get back to you.

Less than 60 days to go to Lisbon where we will celebrate the day when Celtic Football Club became champions of Europe and changed the face of European Football on and off the pitch.

Thanks for the feedback – really appreciate it.

I have no interest in “monetising” the site. I don’t get a lot of hits anyway – I guess this is a bit niche! But in any case I have no interest in polluting the site with advertising. I find CQN hard enough to access both on PC and iPhone as well as other prominent Celtic sites.

Not sure what happened with the comment – can’t think why Sin City would cause a problem!
