Brown and Lustig with international and Champions League conflicts

848

A year ago you and I discussed Scott Brown’s fitness with some concern for the season ahead. Since then the captain has not skipped a beat, his form and availability for selection have been without question.

It is clear he can cope with a Scotland game this weekend, and no doubt finish the season untroubled, but Scotland have an international against England on 10 June, two weeks after the Scottish Cup final, and four weeks before Celtic’s Champions League qualification campaign gets underway.

If Scott is to participate in all games, he will have a week off after the Scottish Cup final before being called into the Scotland squad, then two weeks before Celtic’s preseason training starts. For a player of his age, with his injury profile, this schedule would not allow sufficient recuperation ahead of a new season.

Selfishly, the most important thing to you and I, and to Celtic, is Champions League qualification, more so than the Scottish Cup, or than a season of invincibility, delightful, though both would be. What Brendan Rodgers backroom team need to do is prepare Scott as thoroughly as possible for the middle of July. Planning should start now.

If there’s another player in the Celtic squad who I would also like to ration his football it’s Mikael Lustig. The Sweden international is likely to be involved in both their international squad in June; a World Cup qualifier against France and a derby against Norway.

If Scotland fail to get a positive result against Slovenia on Sunday, Scott might consider it best to retire from the international stage, again. He and Mikael could do with a few weeks on the beach at the end of the season.

I notice your reference to Duncan Edwards in your post. I was Wembley in 1957 for the England v Scotland game. Edwards was a phenomenal player and would definitely have been a captain

  2. Tontine Tim,

Quite brilliant recollections and details again.

I read both blanchflowers and dougans book, honest. Excellent.

In sporting terms, pre troubles, and even with an establishment slant, Catholics were picked for the north team.

Always great to hear about players from the past, Edwards is one I’ve wondered about. What I’ve read he was to be a great but interesting to know what you thought of him, in the flesh?

  5. Cosy Corner Bhoy,

everything Ive ever read about Edwards says he was a legend in the making.

    damn shame what happened.

Good evening P. I value the personal experience , viewpoint ,or opinion of a witness to any game ,player or incident way above any search engine.

Anyone who doubts me that’s going to Lisbon……..ask Oldtim why he fell in love with Celtic ..

  8. So happy to report that GOALS FOR SHAY 2 now has the magical 88 entries. Last time we had 117. Surely we can smash that this time!

I’m a glutton for punishment obviously!. A 9 week competition where every entrant sends at least 1 email every week. And I’m hoping for more than 117 entries!!! Keeps me away from eating and drinking I suppose!

Wee idea – if you have a wee circle of 8 – 10 friends/family, enter the competition but also have a wee sdie tournament at a cuple of quid a head to see who ends up on top of your own clique!!

Think Duncan Edwards, think Bobby Murdoch,

The comparison is a general one, as Edwards’ career was tragically short.

Saw him at Parkheadcum in the summer of 1956, six months before Munich.

  12. Slow motion always makes tackles look worse IMO, i both guys going at speed to win the ball, i don’t think Taylor tried to do Coleman, he looked upset when he got sent off.

  13. If the Ref had sent off BALE for a shocker of a tackle seconds before, then Seamus Coleman would be fit for Everton at the weekend.

    Report that English Media?

  14. Nah Bada, It was a shocker, John Kennedy tackle comes to mind. Can’t really express my feelings about Taylor or I would be joining the Holy Triumvirate of Awe Naw, Jinky & Kitalba on the sidelines.

I saw a few highlights (lowlights?) online. It was a shocker from Bale; I reckon any other player would have walked for it. His reputation saved him.

Bada, I don’t think he went in to break his leg but it was an horrific challenge and I reckon he was out to do him – he had just lunged in previously as well. Out of control.

  17. I think Wales felt Ireland were over physical first half & decided to even the score second half. I agree that Taylor didn’t mean to break his leg but I reckon he did mean to hurt him. A poor game overall but everyone in the pub where I watched it, were just concerned about the injury. The game & the result meant hee haw.

  18. Corky-VFR- thanks for replies, i don’t think ìt was intentional, i watched it live but no replays , always tells you it’s a bad one, seen it again now and i think it was 2 guys going for the ball, i could be wrong……again HH

  20. Won’t argue with you Bada, I’m absolutely incensed about it and would say something I regret. So I’ll just sign off.
