Bury, Bolton, the remarkably durable English game

443

I have heard a lot of nonsense as to why Bury are this morning expelled from the Football League and Bolton Wanderers are two weeks away from a similar fate.  There are not ‘too many teams’, in fact, attendances across all levels of the game in England are at historical highs and compare favourably to those in mainland Europe.  More choice has led to more attendees.

Inadequate ‘fit and proper tests’ are not to blame either.  None of those responsible for the plight of these two clubs had red flags in their backgrounds.  The suggestion that supporter representation on the board would have inhibited clubs spending their way into trouble is perhaps the most laughable suggestion.  Can you imagine a fans’ rep. at a board meeting saying, “Hang on, we can’t sign him, that’s going to push our wage levels to unsustainable levels”?

Football clubs are remarkably durable.  Most of the senior club formed in the 19th century are still in business.  The failure rate is incredibly low comparable to any industry.

The grass roots game, which Bury is a part of, is healthier in England than in anywhere in the world.  Bury over-spent, securitised their stadium and had multi-year commitments they could no longer service.  They failed because they are the worst crop in the field.

Bolton were a fixture in the Premier League when the late Phil Gartside was in charge, but the loss of revenue from that source following relegation is like nothing else in world sport.  I’m amazed we see so few failures of this nature, but by any reasonable expectation, failures like Bury and Bolton should be more common than they are.

There are those in the game who think ‘the model’ of English football is broken.  I have been reading the tea leaves of English football finances for decades.  The model looked broken before Financial Fair Play brought a correction to the market, but we will need to see a lot more Bolton and Burys fall down before that theory stands up.

  1. Watched whole Slavia-Cluj game. Slavia are not a great side, but defensively, they are far superior to us. Over 180 minutes, they simply did not grant any clear chances to a team who took five off us. Realistically, they will be cannon fodder in the CL.

  5. Have Sevco, to make it look as though the poor dears are desperate to be rid of these nasty racists who are in their support, pre-empted UEFA by saying the won`t sell any Away tickets for their next ( ?) European game?

Isn`t that, according to someone on here earlier, what UEFA would give as the next punishment?

  7. I see that Last Man Standing 13 will be launched shortly. It appears tht the email address included in CRCs post at 10.32 had a rougue space in the middle, perhaps to symbolise the 3,000 spaces that will be at Ibrox tomorrow evening. ANyway, despite the fact that I’m no longer part of the organising committee, I think the correct email address is cqnpredictor@gmail.com .

  22. Good Morning, milder, yet still humid night in the Scortching Chilterns…

    GREENPINATA…

Think it is worth clarifying a point re: loanees and signing options from my comments last night.

    My tone seemed somewhat abrupt.

Now the two loanees that we’ve brought in the last week could be a huge help in this seasons campaign, agreed.

My point was really to do with how these deals are spun.

OE was brought in as a loanee with an option to sign.

Unlike, say Patrick Roberts, who was brought in as a loanee, who if circumstances were favourable we may have been able to sign.

Now the reality is that these deals, which can be expensive, are percieved to be more palatable with an option to sign being spun.

Moritz Bauer would be as the Paddy scenario, though clearly more affordable.

Fraser Forster was a great bit of business fashioned quickly after Scott Bain picked up an injury.

    It’s a win~win:-

Celtic get back up in the position

Fraser gets a chance to work with Steve Woods and rekindle his career

Southampton get value add to their GK if it works out.

Now, if big Fraser works out, he is a £10M GK on £70,000 per week.

How do we sign him? Even if we can negotiate a reduced transfer fee, if we put him on our top wage there is still a £6M defecit, who picks that up? Southampton? Fraser? ‘Cause we won’t.

If the loan doesn’t work out, well the wage problem doesn’t change and are we going to pay a fee and put FF on top do$$ar in those circumstances. Obviously not.

Scott Bain got injured, we did a great bit of business to bring FF in a had him between the sticks at the weekend.

So why spin it, to make it look something it’s not? Window dressing.!?

Good luck to Lenny and the bhoys in Sweden this evening. The one constant shining light this season has been the sheer quality and gallasness of our forwards.

Too much for AIK tonight me-thinks…

    Hail Hail

  24. Good morning friends from a dry, bright but breezy East Kilbride. And Happy Europa League Qualifying Day!

  25. Hamilton Tim . Good to hear from you and I hope all is well with you.

I think you know that for over 40 years now, and especially during their 9 in a row when I travelled each weekend from London, I have supported the club as a fan by our family season tickets, or as a corporate sponsor at various times persuading major companies to spend their money with Celtic. My current business still does this which leads me to personal challenges elsewhere in the city and vilification on other clubs message boards.

That is precisely why when I read such utter crap as I see on here from bitter huns trolling and winding up folk who seem to think Celtic have divine right to win every game and sign players to play in a crap backwater league it frustrates me.

11 leagues out of 14 is a good return in most competitions where 2 clubs started on level footing but 1 has the distinct advantage of a subservient media and establishment endorsement. Remember we were a financial basket case after Seville which was a season our rivals also won a treble.

In that time we have also gone beyond groups in CL 3 times vs none before. Ande been in Europe post xmas 7 times vs 1 before.

Yesterday we had folk on here slating the club for signing a right back that few had even heard of before yesterday and it seemed it was just because we had signed him. They don’t even mention the right back we have already signed because he actually looks decent and that doesn’t suit the whinging narrative.

We need supporters and team aligned like never before this season and there are many happy to help us derail our efforts. Although some posters are never happier than when moaning.

  26. Hope Neil & the bhoys get the job done tonight, I think Europa participation is massive for the club and the players, last few seasons we have been outstanding after the January break, I think our Euro schedule pre-Christmas has a lot to do with that … anyhow the CL has gone and if I heard correctly last night even though seeded well ahead of us this is Slavia Pragues first time in the CL group stages for 14 seasons ! Get the job done tonight and get in the draw at 1pm the morra

  27. *** CQN PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2019-20 ***STARTTS THIS EVENING***

Just for a wee bit of fun, I thought it’s be a good idea to collate opinions, on a game by game basis, with a view to determining CQN’s Player Of The Year for season 2019-20. Paul67 is happy for me to do so. My idea isn’t rocket science – I will simply collate each of your individual opinions on who our best 3 players are on a game by game basis. You don’t need to show the players in order, just the 3 who impressed you most on any given day. I’ll then tally up the votes and each Man Of The Match will score 5 points, with the next 4 highest getting 4, 3, 2, 1.

I don’t plan to read EVERY post that’s made on here 😉. So, can I ask that you vote by sending an email – nothing long winded, just 3 players’ names! Voting will be open for (approximately) 48 hours after the final whistle for each game by sending your 3 picks to me at CQNPOTY@GMAIL.COM . This will start with this tonight’s game against AIK. For that game you can vote up to 10.00pm on Saturday and I’ll then post the first ‘league table’ in plenty time before kick off for game #2 against you know who.

I’ll stick out regular reminders on the blog as each game comes around. You don’t need to sign up or anything, and you don’t need to vote on every game (please just do so for those games that you actually see the whole 90 minutes!).

It’d help if you also mention your Blog Name in your email, although there’s no obligation.

As I said, just a wee bit of fun to maybe give us another topic to discuss as the weeks go on.

  28. The huns have been skelped – ‘fishaly……………

    quite rightly and long overdue.

Their pre-emptive strike in refusing tickets is klever and an appropriate tactic given the circumstances – it’s the least bad outcome for thum. It at least lets thum appear to be in front of the issue.

We all probably know that scoddland will drag us into it in some way……………..let’s be canny out there!

    HH

    PS

Sad to see some vitriolic personal posts between genuine supporters. the sleekit huns should get it tight at every opportunity but we should avoid excessive friendly confrontations imo.

  29. Jobo…….

Great idea with the CQN POTY award………………my “view” from the wireless can be rather skewed thanks in part to my inability to spot a player but mainly due to Shortie’s shortcomings in the impartial dept – however my prediction for seasons end is Christie then Ajer.

    HH

  30. There can be no excuses on Sunday so I don’t want Lennon coming out with any aftermatch comments like :

    We didn’t turn up/we didn’t compete.

We were out muscled in midfield.

When Eddy did his hamstring after 10 minutes we had no other striker available of his standard (as we forgot to properly replace Dembele).

I expect us to get through tonight but that doesn’t alter the fact the Cluj performance was a disgrace. Prague are no great shakes either and will likely prove to be CL cannon fodder. With any sort of intelligent investment CL qualification (and 30m) should have been attainable. But this is the hapless Lawell and Co we are talking about here.
