Cautionary tale from Denmark

943

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

    Big Jimmy,

I was playing 5s the last 2 weeks with Eddie who works in the Shipbank. I mentioned your name and the get together last week and he knew exactly who I was talking about.

    I hope you’re well.

Great business as far as I’m concerned, IMHO he is saft can’t head, can’t tackle and greets to the ref like a big Jessie. His attributes are physical size and pace, he’ll be found out down south.

    As I said my opinion.

Thats Fine and Mahatma Ghandi. Me and you urnae privy to the inner workings of Celtic, we had a Dreadful Season last Season but I Trust Kristoffer Ajer when he credits John Kennedy. John gets battered all over the place so Any Good stuff makes me smile. He is a Celt through and through.

What an amazing collection of “offishell programmes”. Many memories for me.

I remember always being fascinated by the size of the numbers. John Divers No 10 was my hero – always wore my shorts like him.

Remember an uncle who was a Rangers man taking me, a football-daft kid, to Ibrox to see Rangers v Sparta Rotterdam around the same time – only thing I recall from that game is that one of the Dutch players actually wore glasses when playing.

If you can give me an idea of what was being discussed I’ll see if I can find what I actually posted.

That way others can form their own judgement about how accurate your paraphrasing is.

    Over to you.

  8. Ernie

I can’t be arsed looking back, but you said something along the lines of you won’t get a better appraisal of the truth than the BBC, as I said I paraphrased, but thats what you meant and well you know it.

Listen, I like you, many on here don’t, you actually intrigue me as I have not a scooby who or what you are, you have done a great job in that sense, but you can’t or will never pull the wool over my eyes, I am far too old and stupid to let that happen.

    Take care

  9. That’s me done for the night, it’s hot and am getting rather grumpy, the fans are only circulating the hot air so it’s a waste of time.

    Sleep well Timland

  10. Re Ajer, I think he’ll be a great loss to us – both in his playing and his character.

The video of him getting pee’d off at Bayo messing around in the weights room, showed how focused he is.

I hope and I’m confident he’ll go on to bigger and better teams, and all the best to him.

Was about how the BBC was reporting the floods in Germany rather than the Covid death rate in the UK?

That’s the last time I recall mentioning the BBC.

If so, you have misrepresented what I said.

Might be the heat. It’s bad enough here. God knows what it’s like in Spain.

  13. TET

My mate sent a moaning letter to Peter Lawell’s office after a bad run of games – this was maybe 5 or 6 years ago.

He got an email back from PL’s secretary giving my friend a few dates that Peter was available to discuss it face to face!

My mate, as probably most keyboard warriors would, found himself to be double booked the day he was meant to go the Celtic Park.

I like the thought of PL keeping a 5 bar gate tally of all the tough-talkers on his office wall.

    Ernie

No, I didn’t misrepresent what you said, the BBC are the masters of propaganda, end of.

Did the BBC mention the German reporter that got the sack for smearing herself in mud to pretend she helped in the flood relief, she will be getting a job for CNN next, aye it’s hot, only 44 today, so cooler than the past few days, thankfully we don’t have the humidity, it’s as dry as.

Across Wednesday and Thursday more people died of Covid-19 in the UK than perished in the horrendous floods in Germany.

    ####

The death count from the floods in Germany is currently 120. Over 1,000 are still missing.

UK Covid deaths are currently running at 49 per day. That’s people who died with Covid, not of Covid.

Not sure where you’re getting your information from, but I doubt it’s more reliable than the BBC.

  17. Wonder if the Res 12 guys had the privilege and honour of having a sit down pow wow with Peter Lawwell?

  18. Kristoffer Ajer has departed and I wish him well

On the whole I enjoyed watching him play although defensively he was well short of what is required

In the past I asked who would buy him and the team mentioned most was Norwich, which was pretty near bang on

The price is also what I imagined ,the problem I suspect with Kris is because of his physicality he will most likely be selected for defensive duties where as I think his ability would be more suited to a midfield role

I look forward to watching his progress like most other ex Celts [what an honour it must be to be amongst them]

    Ernie

That is not the point, you said that the BBC were I quote “Not sure where you’re getting your information from, but I doubt it’s more reliable than the BBC.”

Now this is another credibility issue, on certain subjects the BBC are on the button, but IMO, in the main, they are only spinning the line they are told to spin, you know that fine well.

  23. THE EXILED TIM on 23RD JULY 2021 10:36 PM

On the specific issue (German flood v UK Covid) the BBC got the balance right.

The stats claimed by the poster criticising the BBC were wrong.

I’m not a fan of the BBC’s reporting of UK politics generally, but that doesn’t mean they’re always wrong about everything.
