Celtic get what their inconsistency deserved

827

Was anyone surprised at yesterday’s result?  You shouldn’t have been.  I don’t think I’ve ever before written two articles against taking a result for granted.  Celtic are ridiculously inconsistent as Kilmarnock, Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness and now St Mirren will testify, even Arbroath left Celtic Park with a draw.  The intensity which has been self-evident on Champions League duty has been posted missing far too often.

Defeat yesterday was entirely possible as is defeat away to Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.  There will be entirely different tactics and attitude when Juventus call next month but right now you’re feeling sore because, against all odds, we’ve conceded a League Cup final place and we’ll find an equally brave opponent at some point in the Scottish Cup unless a solution is found.

Speaking at the funeral of Sean Fallon last week, Sir Alex Ferguson referred to need for a manager to be a hard taskmaster, generating a corresponding need for the assistant manager to be plugged into the dressing room.  I’m sure this is not the only way of managing a football team but it was how Jock Stein and Sean worked, and it’s how Sir Alex has worked for the last three decades.

Millionaire players need an edge in their lives to deliver on a lesser stage.

I had to be in Paisley all morning, which did not help my mood.

How’s it gaun fella,… I had to look that one up. Incredible. What a delight it must have been to see that. “A taste of things to come”.

Here’s a quote from Wiki….and you were close with the score. :)

” He was a late developer and he was almost 21 by the time he nailed down a first team spot in August 1971, long after his contemporaries such as Macari and Hay. In May 1971 he gave the fans a taste of things to come when he scored six goals in Celtic’s 7-2 win over Kilmarnock in a testimonial for Frank Beattie. ”

Btw my point about Vic was in response to someone that pointed out he was possibly injured or ill and was a possible reason for his drop in performance. It’s a mystery to me why that was but take you’re point on board that Vic’s profuse sweating early on in the game can be disregarded.

  4. Hi Celts,

in regards to yesterdays result and the reaction I tend to agree with Kilbowie Kelt when saying to appreciate the good days it is important to accept the bad.I would add that we need to learn too.We have no right to any trophy, and trophies Celtic compete in are important.

Re left hand debate-was it not seen as the work of the devil as to write left handed meant you could not possibly be seated ‘at the right hand of the father’ hence my granda’s generation the teacher would not hesitate to tie the left hand behind the back.ps i am left handed lol

I dont disagree that the crowd does have a part to play …. I think that the GB are worth a goal in big games.

but, at the end of the day… the crowd pays, NFL gets paid to coach, and the players get paid to play…. and he who pays, calls the shots.

dont think this is a chicken or egg thing…. ultimately, it is up to the team to produce the goods, and as Mr. Kinsella says, ‘if you build it, they will come’.

And, you can tell in which games/against which teams we are going to struggle, and the ways in which we will struggle…. when we are at home/teams set up to defend, we cant break them down … that, too me, suggests that it isn’t a psychological thing, so much as a tactical problem…. not sure what the crowd can really do about that.

    Yes and no.

You maybe had to be there yesterday to comprehend how utterly inept most of our players were. It was hapless from back to front. I’m struggling to think of a single player who brought his B game out, let alone his A game.

We started off with Wanyama sitting between Brown and Ledley, with Sammi and Lassad either side of Hooper up front. seemed a decent line up to me, particularly following the Dundee Utd result using a similar approach.

Following St Mirren’s first goal, Brown was pushed wide right and Sammi left to make a 4. Brown doesn’t have the tools to play so wide, and Sammi had a stinker. Ledley and Wanyama provided little, the full backs rarely if ever got beyond their opposite number, Mulgrew and Wilson gaped at each other as time and again they gave the ball away hopelessly. They were so bad Goldstar10 was near enough going to throw his favourite pie at them.

With only 3 subs permitted from 4 outfield players, there was little Lenny could do, short of watch on in despair as each of the players in turn demonstrated the comedic art of playing in someone else’s boots.

Well done St Mirren though for getting to the final. A great day for the fans and the players. The cash will be as important to them as the occassion I suspect.

  7. The Battered Bunnet on

For the sake of clarity, can I point out that to Goldstar10’s favourite pie is always his next one.

  8. The atmosphere at any match is undoubtedly important and can lift the players accordingly.

Barca game at CP being the main case in point.

But what about the Spartak game in Moscow – attendance about 50,000, including only a few hundred Celtic fans, who did ‘tho offer fantastic backing to the side.

After going behind 2-1, the players lifted their game and we all know what happened.

We won because they showed the correct attitude, skill and a never-say-die determination to win the game which was not evident yesterday.

*I was at that game and we were well gubbed 4-0, I always thought it was Sean Fallon he fell out with at half time.

I met him years later and spent a bit of time in his company, I said to him if he hadn’t left we would never have heard of Bobby Murdoch, his response was if he had stayed we would never have heard of him as Bobby was that good, very humble mhan who just didn’t realise who he was to us older Tims.

  19. Burghbhoy

The major fall-out Pat Crerand had was with the late Sean Fallon, at ht during a game at Mordor. We were trailing 1-0 and ended up losing 4-0.

Pat also liked to speak his mind and also had some disciplinary problems, which did not go down too well with Bob Kelly who ruled the roost in those days.

Pat was in tears, apparently, when he was told he was being sold.

Dont disagree with your observations… while I had to do with watching on C67, the switch in formation was obvious.

What I struggle to understand is why (i) we have so many of the one type of midfielder (SB, JL, VW, BK – all played largely as holding, and (ii) why do we seem to be getting so much less from players than they seem otherwise capable of …. JL was a more dynamic player in Wales… similarly SB (love his engine and his attitude, but not sure he has the tactical nous) looked much better when played wide right of a three man midfiled at Hibs…

We need more control and penetration from the centre of the park… in addition to the obvious benefits, it will open up space for out wide players, and allow our strikers to paly up front (whereas, because our midfield play so deep, GH keeps dropping back to become involved in the play)…. we need to use our pace to break more quickly, and our superior ftiness to outrun and outmove teams… but the centre mid is the heart of the team…

I dont think this team lacks heart, so much as it is lacking a centre mid.

But,. hey, if this coaching thing was easy, we’d all agree, and all do it… but we dont, so obviously it isn’t as easy as it seems from the cheap seats.

    Mike,

yip, agree again with much of that, but for pretty much every player to fail to turn up yesterday indicates (imo) a specific problem with the group on this occassion, rather than a coaching or tactics issue.

  25. ROW Z - Let Celtic Flourish By The Cleansing Of The 'Den! on

There really are no single issues to point to from yesterday but several:

    1. Conditions – howling gale at zero degrees on a slippy pitch is not our best playing scenario – view – unlucky

    2. Hampden – we ARE struggling to play here for some reason(s) – view – analyse and sort

    3. The dreaded 3 man midfield. – When we play on a large open park like Hampden and have 3 against 5 the 3 have too much ground to cover resulting in shadow chasing – view – tactical wrong choice – sortable but wasn’t. Even got to half time level and could have been sorted.

    4. Game of Your Life – Players who rarely get a sniff of a final/medal will die in a semi to get there. We need to match that passion and desire. View – If this was boxing we’d be on the canvas. Lost nearly all 50/50s.

    5. Rusty – Wilson clearly was.

    6. Uncomfortable – describes the two central defenders all day

    7. Uninvolved – describes Lassad

    8. Off form – nearly everyone played below their best

    9. Full backs – roughly describes where they played most of the game

    10. Movement and Passing – How many times will forwards make runs yet not get a forward pass? Midfield preferring short side pass instead? – view – two different games being played at the same time which does not maximise impact.

Overall – Had we taken our chances we would have won, even though we played badly and were largely out fought.

Gone now so onwards and upwards.

    HH

  26. As a young bhoy, my first hero was Paddy Crerand. I still think he was a better passer of a ball than Bobby Murdoch. But Bobby’s overall play made him in a class of his own. Mind you, I still think Charlie Gallagher was a better passer than wee Bertie. Again, wee Bertie’s overall contribution made him the mhan to hold down the number 10 jersey.

Thinking about it, we were simply blessed with truly great football players at that time.

Our current team badly needs someone who can sit in the middle of the park and open up a defence like any one of those 4.

Funny how two (obviously clever) gents can look at the same thing, and see the exact opposite….

If it had only been one or two players who were off, I’d agree its not a coaching issue, but when it is (and I agree – everyone was poor yesterday), then that tells me the problem isn’t with every player, but the one coach…

But, as they say, its a funny old game.
