Celtic growing into their skin, more on Maribor

1610

You could see Celtic mature during last night’s game.  They were defensively solid during the first half, and Craig Gordon was assured throughout, but for the best part of an hour we scarcely tested St Johnstone.

That changed after the goal, which arrived just as St Johnstone were enjoying their best period of the game.  Kris Commons didn’t have his most productive night but it was his pressing which led to the break through.

During the second half Ronny Deila replaced Commons, Stokes and the tiring Forrest with Boerrigter, Inge Berget and Kayal.  Even before the home team were reduced to 10 men moments after the final substitution, Celtic were clearly in a more comfortable shape.  Players were finding space which didn’t exist earlier.

Maribor made seven changes for last night’s Slovenian Super Cup Final, which they won comfortably against opponents who are pointless in the league after four games.  Celtic’s scouts are unlikely to have learned too much useful information ahead of next weeks’ game.

What is clear about Maribor is their aerial threat.  Five of their 12 goals this season have been headers, which may influence Ronny’s team selection.  They also break quickly down the flanks, so maybe a 4-5-1, offering protection to our full backs, is the way to go.  Hopefully we’ve learned we’re not quite ready for 4-3-3 away from home in Europe.

The Slovenian media are dismissive of Celtic’s chances, encouraged, it seems, but continuing celebrations from Maribor that they pulled an “easy” draw.  I suspect they’ve yet to see the Celtic who will take the field on Wednesday.

  2. CQN Saturday Naps

Lads, for all the mug-punters out there… the CQN Naps competition resumes again this Saturday, and hopefully PF ayr will be around to defend his crown.

In order to confirm your entry, please send me an e-mail stating your CQN username to : fleagle29 at ymail.com

After that, the RULES are relatively simple :

    a) each Saturday log onto the last page of the previous CQN article.

    b) post only ONE ‘nap’ selection from any major Saturday horserace meeting (e.g. UK, Ireland, Dubai)

    c) if your selection is a Non-Runner, you may select an alternative – as long as it also runs on the Saturday.

    d) if your nap wins, you will “win” the hypothetical profit from a £1 stake @ Starting Prices (S.P.)

e.g. selection wins at 9/4, your hypothetical profit is +£2.25

e.g. selection wins at 5/1, your hypothetical profit is +£5.00

    e) if your nap loses or if you fail to post a selection, you will “lose” your £1 hypothetical stake (-£1)

    f) if you want to join the competition late (e.g. in Week 3) you will be allocated 2 losers, and will start the competition from (-£2)

    g) Our winner and CQN Naps Champion Tipster will be the CQN punter who shows the greatest overall profit during the season.

Last season the competition lasted for 40 weeks, and PF Ayr was the champion tipster, with +£12.60 profit

    Happy punting everyone…

    :o)

    Cheers, fleagle1888

If anything I see more of a gap opening up between the English Championship and Leagues 1/2 as it tends to be the same clubs going up and down from Prem to Championship(QPR etc). Tbh I don’t really see League 1 becoming a huge threat – many Championship clubs themselves play to half empty stadiums and are in a poor financial state. The Scottish game is on a more solid financial footing and hopefully that is something that can be built on if indeed there is no restructure of the Euro game any time soon,

you may find it unacceptable that a Celtic employee requires protection, but sadly that is the world we live in

I have not heard that anyone at Celtic is payed less than minimum wage, however, and would be hugely surprised if that were so

McCann is there to be conroversial.

Sky TV will have ramped them up this season to say things that will get tweeted, Facebooked and generally talked about in the media and the Forums.

BT are a serious challenger to Sky TV and they will look for any angle to get maximum publicity. Money is king to these guys. They will be told what type of things to say to keep people talking about the game and the number of Twitter hits will be monitored. They will not be concerned if you think he is an idiot as long as you # tag it!

The world is changing but the money is still the carrot for these boys.

This blog is getting worse by the day! If anyone dares to share an opinion that the board are performing poorly or that the current team is performing as badly as the teams of the early nineties (which they are), they are shouted down as Huns! I have been a member of this blog since near enough it’s inception and this is the reason I rarely post! I even saw the owner of the blog getting shouted down on twitter last night because he said we didn’t deserve the first goal based on our performance!

We got a few lucky breaks last night otherwise we were in for another dire performance! They should have had a penalty, poor defending for the first but commons took advantage and has to be commended for his work rate.

The second goal I will say nothing about as McCann really let the veil slip last night.

The third, mcgregor should have passed. Am I the only person who thinks this kid is hugely over rated simply because we are currently so poor?! He has 3 goals this season, a fortunate deflection against legia and the shambolic goalkeeping incident last night are included in these!

We badly need a striker! Johansen is a poor man’s Ledley! Izzy, commons, and stokes look lost in 4-2-3-1. The last 15 mins we looked more like the old Celtic, we actually strung a few passes together and looked a threat.

We need to sort this squad out now! Every year we are told to wait until the end of the transfer window, when we don’t invest, the usual excuses come out, we tried but x said no ( we have months/years to plan so should have numerous back ups), we don’t want to end up like rangers, wait to the next window blah blah blah! Then come January we are told it’s not the right time to buy and the cycle continues!

One question I must ask, why when we only sign cheap/project players do we not sign a project CEO? A hungry up and coming go getter, willing to work for 1/10 of the salary of our current CEO? Then we can sell him on for a profit ☺️

A few days ago the DR quoted Dan Petrescu as claiming that he was offered the Celtic job and that he was put off by Neil Lennon after he told him not to touch it as Celtic had problems.

You came on CQN and used that report as a stick with which to beat the board.

I challenged you on using a DR story to attack PL.

Yesterday you told another poster you would never allow the MSM to influence your views.

Today Neil Lennon has denied telling Petrescu not to take the job and indeed, he said he hasn’t spoken to the man at all.

    I’ll leave it at that.

we have seen Commons in the centre before, and to my mind he does not have the legs to cover the ground expected of a central mid. He gets easily exposed when he loses the ball and that exposes those behind him. it also takes him away from the ares he is most effective (30 yards out)

    Nat know

Ok I’ll simplify it for you.

I personally find it unacceptable that any CELTIC EMPLOYEE should require protection. I also find it unacceptable that any CELTIC EMPLOYEE should be paid less than the minimal wage.

    ———————————————————-

Thanks for the simplification. Your two statements are completely unrelated – unless you are linking them and expect me to infer one follows from the other.

Let me simplify it for you.

I personally find it unacceptable that any CELTIC EMPLOYEE should require protection. I also find it unacceptable that any CELTIC EMPLOYEE should be forced to eat Marmite. But just because both statements are about CELTIC EMPLOYEEs, that doesn’t mean that the two statements are related.

BTW – Celtic employees are not paid less than the minimal wage (Minimum Wage). Some are paid less than the Living Wage. I would hope that Celtic can address this and make the Living Wage committment for all CELTIC EMPLOYEES.

Separately, I also agree that no Celtic employee should need protection.

  18. NegAnon2 – lets assume for a wee second that I am right (and I hope I am wrong here, I really do) and Commons is not capable of fitting into the managers philosophy.

So are you saying we just keep a player who cannot fit into the managers team and is therefore virtually useless? Do we make the manager change his whole philosophy for 1 player? Commons is a good player but I can’t see that happening.

As I say I hope he adapts and fits in, I really do he brings loads to the team, but if he doesn’t why on earth would he be kept? It is hardly a new tale where a new manager comes in with different ideas that existing players cannot fit into.

  24. The first leg against Maribor is only 6 days away. The second leg only 12 days. Celtic have tickets to sell. Overseas supporters have travel plans to make. Maribor need to know who they are playing and where they will be travelling to.

  27. On Legia and internal conference with Henning Berg.

    This is my guess.

UEFA have delivered their verdict to Legia.

    “You forfeited the match 3-0”.

“You go out on away goals rule”.

“Having been beaten by Celtic, you are in the play-off for Europa League”.

“Celtic will face Maribor in ECL play-off”.

“If you wish to take the case to the CAS then you will not be able to play any UEFA games until the case is heard and resolved”

“in theses circumstances your upcoming games in Europa play off will be forfeited and you will loses 6-0 on aggregate”

“you will be eliminated from this seasons Europa League”.

“What do you want to do? You have 24 hours to decide”

“What do you want to do Henning?”

Of course the above is probably a load of rubbish, and we will be playing Europa play-off.
