Celtic growing into their skin, more on Maribor

1610

You could see Celtic mature during last night’s game.  They were defensively solid during the first half, and Craig Gordon was assured throughout, but for the best part of an hour we scarcely tested St Johnstone.

That changed after the goal, which arrived just as St Johnstone were enjoying their best period of the game.  Kris Commons didn’t have his most productive night but it was his pressing which led to the break through.

During the second half Ronny Deila replaced Commons, Stokes and the tiring Forrest with Boerrigter, Inge Berget and Kayal.  Even before the home team were reduced to 10 men moments after the final substitution, Celtic were clearly in a more comfortable shape.  Players were finding space which didn’t exist earlier.

Maribor made seven changes for last night’s Slovenian Super Cup Final, which they won comfortably against opponents who are pointless in the league after four games.  Celtic’s scouts are unlikely to have learned too much useful information ahead of next weeks’ game.

What is clear about Maribor is their aerial threat.  Five of their 12 goals this season have been headers, which may influence Ronny’s team selection.  They also break quickly down the flanks, so maybe a 4-5-1, offering protection to our full backs, is the way to go.  Hopefully we’ve learned we’re not quite ready for 4-3-3 away from home in Europe.

The Slovenian media are dismissive of Celtic’s chances, encouraged, it seems, but continuing celebrations from Maribor that they pulled an “easy” draw.  I suspect they’ve yet to see the Celtic who will take the field on Wednesday.

Apology is unnecessary but nonetheless I appreciate the gesture.

I, like you, hate to see the internal conflicts that sometimes erupt, but all families have their differences at times.

I seem to remember that Lubo wasnt always a first pick for Martin o’Neil . He preferred the harder-working?? Thomo over the flair of Lubo.

  4. Been reading more on CAS.

It seems that CAS is generally used where both parties are unable to resolve a dispute and both agree to go to arbitration, in which case they obviously both agree to abide by their decision.

That does not preclude Legia from going to CAS on their own, but it means they are unable to fast-track it without the co-operation of UEFA.

Even if Legia proceed with their appeal to CAS, it will take weeks or even months.

    They are poleaxed !!!!

Keep them out permanently celtic, grow a set directors we are way past the point of enough is enough. I wonder if Neil Mccann will be in the sky box on Saturday. Mmmm

  11. What an absolute disgrace BBC Scotland is. I am very aware of their bias regarding the Independence debate but they really, really hate Celtic.

Just listened to the sports section on Good Morning Scotland and it was as if it was from the Polish Broadcaster absolutely blaming Celtic at length for the whole issue. The next item was a report on the Championship favorites next game.

No wonder I refuse to pay my license fee.

  12. Parkheadcumsalford,

Whoever runs BBC Scotland Sport has done well for Sevconians. Never mind Begg, Dodds, Young, Lamont etc They have now employed Richard Wilson the Heralds resident Sevco ‘journo’.

Richard Wilson is the author of the BBC Scotland Sport article suggesting CAS will overturn UEFA decision. Richard is one of the more intelligent Sevconians but his hurt shines through. He would be doing somersaults if Celtic were eliminated from The Champions League. It would be like a new signing for Alistair.

BBC Scotland Sport is still stuck in the 17th Century.

My understanding is that any CAS mediation needs to be based on a transgression of sporting or commercial principles. I can’t see how Legia having transgressed UEFA s sporting regulations they can make a commercial argument , never mind winning it. CAS though like all good lawyers will take money and try anything.

  17. I do not agree with the banning of journalists/pundits for giving Celtic a bad press.

Hugh Keevins was banned for telling downright lies, and rightly so, but that is different from the BBC pushing for Legia to be reinstated or Neil McCann calling Derk a cheat.

Unless it is a case of slanderous lies, I don’t allow the media bias to upset me. It has been going on for many decades. If we banned everyone who shows anti-Celtic bias, we would look churlish and worse.

No we wouldn’t …… we would be sending them a message that ‘enough is enough’ and, with the resultant revenue dip in their circulatios etc, they might just decide to work on being less bigoted (i do feel, however, that it is down to (inadequate) individuals, as opposed to Corporations etc) …… Having said that, I haven’t bought a Scottish newspaper for circa 30 years ….. I wonder why the scoddish media are allowed to demonise Celtic at every opportunity. ..yet the plc wont do anything about it.

    The media lie with impunity.

The plc let them…with no challenge.

But if theres any criticism from Celtic fans, about the performance of the plc, they are outraged..funny that.

  31. We have been advised on here many times that the answer to the hacks is simply to stop buying the papers that publish their rubbish. Over the last six months I have stopped buying papers and have saved a considerable amount of money.

One other thought. Will those who have belittled our team and our support in the last few days be lining up to get a seat on the plane to Maribor. I am sure the deep sense of morality will prevail and they will not travel to the game…yeh, and the pigs will be flying along side them.
