Celtic harvesting the mascot generation

343

With St Mirren’s top of the table and derby clashes out of the way, Lewis Morgan attended a medical this morning ahead of his potential move to Celtic. The 21-year-old can play in left, right or central advanced midfield positions.

The player is out of contract in the summer and now free to choose his next contract, although a training compensation fee would be payable, the level of which Celtic have reportedly agreed with St Mirren. It is an indication of the times we live in, when a former Rangers mascot makes Celtic is his destination of choice.

That training compensation fee would not make him Celtic property until summer, so St Mirren are right to resist a little extra cash to part with him early, with their promotion push at a critical phase.

When Brendan Rodgers spoke after our Scottish Cup tie against St Mirren in March he suggested the Championship side were the best domestic opponents we had faced that season. Morgan clearly made an impression the manager followed up on.

  3. Welcome to Celtic Park Lewis Morgan…the ex Sevco mascot .

The question now is did Hoopy Hound resign…or was he sacked ?

I can see an Employment Tribunal coming up……. Hoopy Hound v Celtic FC…unless a deal is struck out of Court ?

if it goes to Court..it could be a real DOGFIGHT ?

    LOL.

I just hope and pray that Hoopy Hound isn’t barking up the wrong tree ?

  4. So 49 years ago today I was taken by my Dad, Uncle Paul and Uncle Billy Brown to see the famous Glasgow Celtic for the very first time in the flesh.

It came after Celtic had already beaten Clyde and lost to Rangers in the previous 3 days !!!

No Jimmy Johnstone in the XI but it didn’t matter to me as I was captivated by 2 goals in the first 9 minutes by Wispy Wallace and wee Bobby secure the points with a 3rd in the second half.

Dunfermline were quite a team then and Alex Edwards had scored for them on 20 minutes. They were cup holders at the time and 3rd in the league. They got to the semi final of the cup winners cup too.

But for me it was all about the team ( I think ) in all green that day.

Standing halfway to the back of the Rangers end was my uncles traditional place apart from Glasgow Derby games. I think this was due to the proximity to my grans house just opposite the Celtic Supporters club. Less of a walk from the club to the Rangers end meant more pre game drams and a shorter trip home for a cuppa at grans after the game. No fancy lounges in those days !

I went to 5 more games that season. A season when we won the treble and the reserves did likewise. Big Billy’s mistake allowing Prati to nip in and knock us out of the European Cup was an aberration. It was a great time to support Celtic.

The following year we went to nearly every home games and most on the road. We joined a supporters club and we flew flags showing 5 in a row above middle class house in the wee proddy enclave we had moved to. My mum was both inwardly amused and outwardly horrified and my dads juvenile behaviour.

In 9 years ( until my parents separated ) my old man took me to over 200 games. Some impossible to recreate experiences. Some impossible to imagine like Tommy Gemmell bursting the net vs Eusebio’s Benfica in the 2nd minute and George Connoly at Leeds and of course the return game at Hampden. Some weird favourites such as a reserve team beating Rangers first choice XI at Hampden in the Glasgow Cup Final. We always did well at Motherwell. Hibs most times at Hampden ( even the Dryburgh Cup loss 5-3 was epic ) Winning the league at Bayview of all places. Harry Hoods hat trick. So many more.

Some despair too such as Dixie and his penalty, Derek Johnstone’s famous goal, Partick 4, Tam Gemmells Dundee with no floodlight in the League Cup Final, Bobby Davidsons Final v the Dons, Athletico animals and almost every game in season 75/6.

Loads of memories. Whilst my mum became my Celtic watching parent and buddy from 1994 until she passed away last November and we had many great times together, those early years were all about me and my dad and Celtic.

It is nice that coming to the odd game with me is still an option for him despite his Alzheimer’s. Strangely being ‘in the moment’ at Celtic Park still gives him some joy. We always drive by where grans tenement was in Dunning St. It doesn’t exist anymore, even as a street, but it always brings a wee smile and a wee tear almost simultaneously……to both our eyes.

Apologies for the indulgent memories but following ‘the Celtic’ has brought so many great shared times that I am now privileged to enjoy with my kids too. I though it worth marking today. I am sure many of you have very similar experiences with both parents and other family members.

  5. Can we sign club mascots ….and then put them out on loan, so they gain more experience ?

Do club mascots have agents….if not…why not ?

Whats next……Celtic signing wee Bhoys who offer to ” watch yr motor mister fur a tanner” ?

    LOL…Only joking folks…welcome Lewis.

That reminds me of the auld joke….A Celtic fan parks his car near Celtic Park just before kick off….a wee boy approaches the Celtic man and says..” Mister I’ll watch yr motor for a tanner” ?

    Celtic fan says…” It’s okay son…I have a Rottweiller in the car”….

Wee boy replies….” Aye mister…but can yr dug put oot fires ” ?

    LOL.

I love that auld joke….especially the bit about parking NEAR Celtic Park !

They all existed, The Scottish Derby was at Carntyne up till1970 before moving to Powderhall and then Shawfield, the Mount Vernon track was just behind where the Dogs trust is now

Great read. That era began with me being taken to games by da, sisters or uncles till I was old enough to go with the cousins/mates.

I remember many of those games – i was about to say ‘remember many of those games well’ but age and faulty memory means that would be pushing it!

Elland Road was my first away game outside Scotland for the European Cup semi first leg, George Connelly supreme, also was at Hampden for the return.

Later in life I worked in Leeds for many years, and always enjoyed reminding Whites fans about 1970!

Good stuff, mate. My Dad took me to most of my early games-from the age of four!-and I still look forward to going to them with him.

  17. Since the financial meltdown of Rangers, the Supreme Court Verdict and the systematic failure of the game’s administrators in Scotland to prevent cheating and deception.

Could anyone on here tell me what safeguards and checks and balances have been put in place to prevent a repetition of this shameful episode?

    As a shareholder can anyone let me know what the Chief Executive of Celtic Plc has done to;

    a) Ensure that checks and balances are in place to prevent a these events happening again?

    b) What has Mr Lawwell done to ensure that the continuity myth of Rangers is corrected?

    c) Ensure that where rules were broken and titles were awarded that the records are amended?

    Thanks

I see a few posters feel that Marvin Compper is ready to start games. Looking at his game time so far this season this looks a little optimistic?

Squad: 7, Starting eleven: 1, Substituted in: 1,

Anyway all the best to him. He might come in fit and eager to play.

Great memories and thanks for sharing.

  22. Burnley 78 . Thanks for sharing .

I see Newco are conducting some transfer business to buy a squad player from Brighton , who play in the world’s richest league . Even squad players ain’t cheap and his wages won’t be a pittance . Bit of a contrast compared to the tales of impending financial doom predicted elsewhere on the Timternet .

Sixteen sleeps till our next game . I’ve always been an advocate of summer football but the close season , in winter time , would be torture .

Btw ,welcome to Celtic , Lewis Morgan . HH
