Celtic on knife-edge

278

We have all the excuses in the world, but if you cannot beat Dundee United, or Livingston, teams with vastly weaker squads than the Celtic teams they denied five points to over the last 8 days, you do not deserve to win the league.

Celtic will improve.  Kyogo Furuhashi, Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor and James Forrest are known quantities who will lift performances and results.  Georgios Giakoumakis will surely also add something.  When we get Christopher Jullien fit he will bring experience to the back line.  Right now that matters little, six points adrift after seven games is the form that leaves confidence on a knife-edge.

Jota was outstanding, a one-man siege of the Dundee United back line, he deserved more from those around him.  Again, Liel Abada timed his run into the box perfectly to head home at the back post.  Anthony Ralston committed to a tackle a minute later and suffered an unfortunate ricochet.  It was not the worst defensive error you have seen from Celtic this year, but from there, Dundee United made no mistake.

Albian Ajeti was already having an afternoon to forget (think Kazim-Richards, but less mobile) when, within seconds of conceding, Abada’s cutback found him three yards from goal.  The striker snatched at the chance and sent it high over the bar.  Ange Postecoglou had no choice to persist with Albian, although surely we will see little of him when fitness allows others to play.

James McCarthy was clattered early and scarcely left the centre circle before being replaced at halftime.  This pleased most around me, but it took Ismaila Soro most of the second half to retain possession.  If McCarthy is not yet fully fit, he should be left before further reputational damage occurs.

On another day one of the three chances that rattled United crossbar would have gone in and the chat would be about digging out a win the way champions do.  Instead, we flattered to deceive, the way those with nothing but sob stories at the end of the season do.

  1. Stunned to read the news of Garry’s passing.

He was in fine form at the Hoot last month and looked a picture of health.

I met his son Ryan for the first time and you could tell Garry was so proud of him.

Thoughts and prayers for all his family and friends.

    RIP Garry.

  2. What terrible news to log on to read

Garry Duncan – you’re the type of Tim who would never let anyone walk alone.

    RIP Delaney’s

  3. Shocked, only met Garry once but he made a lasting impression.

Goodnight and RIP Delaneys Dunky you will be sorely missed.

There will be many tears today, including those of your beloved Dalmuir foxes.

  4. RIP Garry. A man proud of his family but also his local area which really set him apart on here and made his posts really interesting.

I met Garry twice; at the inaugural Hootenanny and at the Dublin 2016 bash. He was great company both times and due to his laid back style (aided by his ‘exotic’ fags!) made him the perfect person to ease my initial nerves at not knowing anyone (yet) and listed to my incessant wittering. Exact same in Dublin a few years later; felt like we were up from the previous week. We used to talk music and working in Derby on here years ago too.

Incredibly sad news and very unfair. Love to all his family

  5. Terrible news about our chum , Garry , a wonderful man , dad and grandad .

I have known Garry for many years , seeing him at half 5 mass in Corpus Christi church in Knightswood , both of us having our first European trip on the Glasgow University CSC to Amsterdam in 1982 then the following year we became members of the Lisbon Lions CSC.

My favourite memory of Garry is the game against Nottingham Forest . The Lions bus left Glasgow around 8am and it was freezing . Garry had the full Celtic strip on. When we arrived in Nottingham it felt even colder than it was in Glasgow. Garry still wasn’t put off. He was still walking about the city centre in the hoops , sort of Broonie style , unperturbed by how cold it was.

God bless you Garry Duncan for being the parent, grandparent and fine man you were .

  6. Dear Lord……..

So shocked to hear of this guy who I only met thru Celtic Quick News…he was such a passionate, genuine, stalwart of Celtic.

    Puts life in perspective.

    HH Delaney’s Dunky

  7. Further to Bourne’s post yesterday about the passing away of Andy McMahon. Andy too was a loving husband , dad and grandad.

Andy was a great trade unionist and Celtic man , member of the Dennistoun Number 1 CSC. He was heavily involved in Fans against Criminalisation who helped get the Offensive Behaviour at Football act repealed.

Andy was a well respected colleague of Bourne and myself who was always worth listening to especially his views on football.

Rest in Peace Andy and may eternal light shine upon you.
