Celtic targeting the young player demographic

219

Notwithstanding the fact that we have only completed two Bosman transfers from Sheffield Wednesday, there is a consistency between them and the plethora of under contract players we have been linked with.  They are in their late teens or early 20s, everyone with growth potential.

Given the season just ended that strategy feels like it would have been a good idea 12 months ago.  Then, we signed David Turnbull from that demographic, although it would be half a season before he was properly introduced in the first team.  Risks about whatever way you spend your money but this strategy should always be high on the agenda.

    Brilliant!

Former Celtic supporter Sean Connery had a vey minor part in that film.

  2. I know nowt about fitba’…………..

certainly not buying players and even less about motivating a TEAM.

I would have thought, as other well-versed Tims have said, that we should be buying some old-stagers, – pros who know the ropes and have been over the jumps already?

We know who the copmpetition are in Scotland, Its Hundom, the huns, the dandies, Hibs until they hibs it and one or two ither agricultural huns………….

If the objective is to win the domestic League then just use our apparently “better” resources in terms of monies and insights. Naw?

Europe? I’d forget it and concentrate on putting a team out there that beats whoever is in front of in and enjoyable manner…..The Celtic Way – never used to be the hard way!

  3. Speculation that The Rangers are struggling with uptake of their share issue can’t surprise anyone. Yes, there’s the undoubted financial burden at a time of season ticket renewal etc

But if you’re a blue nose then why would you have any interest in putting your money into a mere holding company? A corporate shell to be discarded as and when suits ?

The lies are coming home to roost in the boardroom at Ibrox.

  4. Didn’t Aberdeen have an awful end to the season when Glass took them over?? Can’t see them doing anything.

Early doors. ‘The Lady Of St Kilda’ back in the day.

Had a wee look into the history of the trading ship itself, which was built by St Thomas Acland, in Devon rather than in Scotland in the 1830s, and was named, on the influence of his wife who had travelled to the islands of St Kilda, and discovered the history of Lady Grange who had been imprisoned on the Island(s) by her husband one hundred years earlier. Fascinating story, found on the ‘Beside the Yarra’ stories of Melbourne website. Apparently the schooner is or was represented on a railway bridge in Melbourne itself.

And how the original St Kilda got its’ name…… that’s a whole other story

    Well we live and learn

Sean Connery did play a minor role as a Celtic supportet but……………

Juan Carlos Cardenas, the man who scored the winning goal in Montevideo, bringing to an end the three-match series that started with a 1-0 win for Celtic at Hampden, followed by a 2-1 victory for the Argentines on their home turf, insists information gleaned from Connery after a chance airport meeting helped Racing.

And that Sir Sean went even further, delivering a team talk to the South Americans in the Hampden dressing room before the first match that was won by Billy McNeill’s goal for Celtic.

Now 75 and still living in the Argentine capital, Cardenas takes up the story, while admitting a profound sadness at the passing of the Edinburgh-born acting great.

“When I heard the news about Sir Sean Connery’s death while I was watching the TV, I was really sad as another Racing fan has left us to rest in heaven,” he said.

“Terrible news for his family, friends and fans all over the world.

“For the Racing family this year has been a dreadful one. We lost our coach from 1967, Juan Jose Pizzuti who passed away in January at the age of 93.

“Looking back, in those days things were difficult. It was different days. There was no technology, internet or mobile phones.

“When we found out we were going to play against Celtic, we were in a panic. We didn’t know anything about them.

(R-L) Former Racing Avellaneda players Parenti, Rulli, Maschio, Cardenas, Martin and Spilinga (Image: Antonio Carlo)

“Our coach, Pizzuti wrote letters to Argentinian stars Alfredo Di Stefano who was in Spain and Omar Sivori who was in Italy, asking for information about Celtic.

“Both replied to Pizzuti with little pieces of information. We have to remember Celtic beat Inter Milan in the European Cup Final.

“Pizzuti flew to Glasgow to watch Celtic playing a friendly game before our game. I believe this game was against Penarol Montevideo.

“He only managed to watch them once. He couldn’t talk a single word of English. He was a very brave man going to Scotland.

“His first conclusion was scary as he told us that Celtic was ‘un hueso duro de roer’ – a hard bone to crack. Pizzuti was worried.

“When we flew to Glasgow to play against Celtic, we had a stop over in London to later continue our trip
 to Glasgow.

“When we changed the plane, in the terminal we realised Sean Connery was there. Can you imagine? He was in
the same room going on to our flight
to Glasgow.

“We were so excited when we saw him. Our chins dropped! We recognised him right away because of all his films. We asked him if he could sign autographs for us. He never complained, he patiently waited
to sign the autographs. He never showed an annoyed face. He was so friendly and approachable all the time even though
 he couldn’t speak Spanish.

“I have to admit that we were so excited to see him that some of us could have been too much for him. Another famous person in his position could have told us where
to go.

“Even our defender Juan Luis ‘Panadero’ Diaz, who was a ‘cheeky’ boy and used to joke a lot, moved towards him like he was shooting him.

“Our coach was not impressed with him. Pizzuti had other plans in his head in that moment.

“Pizzuti was desperately asking people if someone could speak Spanish and English. He asked everybody in the terminal room.

“By luck, he managed to find a Spanish stewardess who could talk both languages.

“Pizzuti sat next to Sean in the terminal and bombarded him with questions about Celtic.

“He told us about McNeill, (Bobby) Murdoch, (Jimmy) Johnstone and the left-back, (Tommy) Gemmell.

“He was an incredible help. He even sat next to him in the flight so they could continue talking.

“The day of the game and to our surprise, someone knocked our dressing room door. When the door opens, there was James Bond, 007 with a gentleman who could translate for us.

“It was a massive psychological boost for us that a superstar like Sir Sean was with us in the dressing room.

“He was talking with all the players. The gentleman was translating and our hearts were beating rapidly.

“We were really nervous as it was an incredible atmosphere in Hampden.

Racing Avellaneda legend Juan Carlos Cardenas (Image: Antonio Carlo)

“We didn’t have much experience playing in such big international games. Sean Connery gave us the belief in the preview moments before the kick off.

“Without him we couldn’t have held our nerves in the first game.

“We could have lost far more goals in the first game if it hadn’t been for that.”

Cardenas revealed the Scot’s death has been keenly felt among the Racing family. He added: “Sean was one of us. He was a Racing fan. He helped us to be world champions. He is a legend for everybody at Racing.

“Sir Sean helped us to beat such an incredible team like Celtic in the Intercontinental Cup.

“The victory against Celtic was the first victory of Argentinian football internationally. Thanks to Racing’s victory, we managed to place our country in a worldwide football context.

“Celtic were an incredible team. I was lucky to score two goals against them. One was in Avellaneda and the other one was in the final game in Montevideo. He helped us to beat Celtic.

“From the Racing Avellaneda’s family, dear Sean Connery RIP”.

Thank you for a civil debate.

There can be no two tier system of support. ST or no ST we are all equal and there must always be a place for ” walk off the street” supporters. Many supporters simply cannot afford a ST and money is tight for most families.

It is impractical or impossible for all supporters to have a ST.

We also have an obligation to our world wide support.

Incidentally a ban on merchandise will hit them disproportionately as they always like to show the colours.

As for entitlement, I am referring to those who chased our team buses and shouted obscenities at Neil Lennon. ( A man who has suffered so much for us )

These ” supporters ” are not entitled to do these childest acts.

    Cheers and HH.

  14. There will be full houses. The vaccine programme is designed for such events.

We cannot lock down forever and we must learn to live with this virus.

For those waiting on life saving operations and those whose mental health cannot take anymore, we must return to normality or as near as is practicable.

When the virus ” cure” causes more harm than good, then we must change tactic.

Of course those of us who want to self isolate indefinitely, that is their perogative and their wishes must be respected.

    I agree.

If NHS capacity appears at risk of being breached then re-introduce restrictions as necessary. At the moment vaccinating has greatly reduced the chances of an NHS capacity breach so it’s vital now to open up otherwise we never will.

No one is wearing a face mask inside restaurants, pubs, nightclubs etc it’s not practical and these businesses need to be allowed to reopen.

We certainly need some quality and depth in the team as we are weaker than last season.

  22. In an e-mail from Celtic:

“Five English sides will provide the opposition during pre-season as the Hoops aims to hit the ground running, and while there are no spectators allowed at the games, you can watch all five matches LIVE on Celtic TV. Season Ticket holders can watch live on the Pass to Paradise.”

  23. ROLLING_STONE on 6TH JULY 2021 12:04 PM

Whose absence, based on last year`s form, relates to us having a weaker team?

  24. Rolling_Stone on

Do you think we are stronger for losing Broony, Elyanoussi, Elhamed, Klimala, Duffy, Laxalt, Kenny and Frimpong?

We have brought in Shaw and the other guy from Sheffield Wednesday.

Eddy, Christie, Ajer, Ntcham, Boli also remain up in the air – they may not be here for CL qualifiers or by end of the window.

How could we possible be stronger given the above?
