Boavista were a better team than Maribor and Astra. By some distance. At that time they were outperforming Sporting Lisbon and Benfica in the league.
They were UEFA cup semi finalists so were obviously a team of decent quality.
They had a goalkeeper Ricardo who went onto win about 50 caps for Portugal, and played in world cups and European championships.
They could not be compared in any way to the Maribor team I watched earlier this season or to that really poor Astra team I watched tonight.
Maribor provide 1 player for the Slovenian national team. That is how good they are.
Nothing that we did in the Seville season can possibly be cast up to excuse or rationalise what we are being served up this season. It is a ridiculous comparison that bears no scrutiny at all.

Fans have their part to play no doubt but there are a number of things wrong with our club both on and off the pitch at the moment. I don’t blame sections of the support for displaying their frustrations. Whether it be vocally or as is more often these days with the vast empty spaces around the stadium.
Something ain’t right and if things are allowed to linger on (Not just the manager) then the longer we will see continued fan apathy.
Three points won, thanks very much, but the performance was poor.
Tonight, it’d didnt seem to me it was tactics, or lack of shape.
It was players not passing 5 yards, or running to close down, or make space.
Seldom seen Scott Brown play so poorly.
Scepovic and Johansen played ok.
Gordon played very well.
That was about it. Even Lustig looked out of sorts.
Tonev, please no more, he may have skill, but hide and seek isn’t the game.
But, three points, learn, move on and improve.

Just back from the game, my first in two months owing to work commitments.
Feeling slightly more detached these days so went into this with few prejudices about how we were playing.
But the only positive from tonight was the result. The performance was dire.
We looked disjointed, shapeless, uninterested, slack… our possession was terrible, our passing really sloppy. We didn’t pose them a threat until Tonev came on, and even then we almost contrived to throw it away.
Astra were a poor team, and yet they’ll be kicking themselves as 3 points were theirs for the taking.
I shudder to think what would have happened if we had scraped into the CL. Ronaldo would be able to beat us on his own.
Ronnie spent a lot of time, arms folded, in the dugout. Ocassionally JC would tap him on the shoulder, but the lack of energy from the technical area was noticeable. I am reluctant to read too much into this stuff, but I really get the sense that either he doesn’t know what he is doing, or the players haven’t a clue what they are supposed to do.
Worrying times.

On a side issue, when you look at how poor we were tonight, you look at the opposition, the fact it was the Europa Cup, you look at the closed top tier and the empty seats in the bottom, you really have to wonder how on earth Peter Lawell managed to steal £400, 000 in bonus money from our coffers.
Its absolutely galling.

No confidence, no composure, no passion no aggression, no shape, no ideas no pace. WTF is going on. Why does everyone try and play 1 touch all the time when we could take a touch and play a better pass?
We won though it was awful for most of the game but fair play to Scepovic he kept going and took his chance ( at last). He has good movement and I think will come good. Major problems in the midfield we need a ball winner and we need some physical strength throughout the team. Lustig still does not look fully fit and he loos thin.
Thank goodness for Craig Gordon our hero again he needs to be signed on a long term deal ASAP.

Match went exactly as I forecast last night hanging on to a slender lead, biting nails down to the quik
as we played out the usual four minutes added time except to_night it was three minutes. Astra played well in the first half and thanks to our terrific goalkeeper we shipped no goals. Obviously the crowd were having a go at the team and the tension and nerves became apparent. The worrying part for me was when players were not showing for the ball from teamates , confidence was completely shot.
After the opening score Scepovic and the team finally started to play and should have put the game out of sight before Astra’s scrambelled score which some on here say was elbowed into the net. Three points and top of the group.
