  1. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ CELTIC40ME on 27TH FEBRUARY 2020 10:57 PM

    Seville knocked them out.

  2. More annoyed than disappointed, we should have won this tie last week, the panic we showed when they scored was alarming. If we want to be seen as a credible European team,we need to be beating the like of Copenhagen. A major fail.

  3. We have a right to be disappointed and critical.

We lost tonight to an unexceptional team who were eminently beatable. I was worried before the tie as to how a Celtic, without Brown, wouuld cope. I should have been worrying if a half-fit brown was good enough to play.

Eddie missed a barrowload of first half chances in Copenhagen and we were equally wasteful in the first half tonight with Forrest, Rogic and Elyanoussi missing chances. Copenhagen though they were competitive, created no clear chances but then we gifted them one through Jozo’s brainfart. Having got ourselves back level we were favourites again until a bout of leg waving defending saw the sky fall in.

Neither Copenhagen nor the Huns will trouble the quarter final stages, IMO, but , then, neither would we if we had got through tonight.

Too many sub-par performances on the night, including the manager’s reluctance to introduce Griff. I like Jozo as a natural defender- his instincts are better than his colleagues usually but he has got deserved criticism for his fitness record. Tonight he was having a poor game but nothing like as bad as it became after his error gifted their first goal. He had a Katic of a game after that and Neil would have been showing him mercy by taking him off and bringing on Griff.

I am grateful for all we have done this season including a great Europa League Group run but, it is still possible to appreciate that and feel really really disappointed that we blew a great chance to have another tilt at the Europa. There are, at least, 2 poorer teams than us in the draw for the next rround.

Sunday goves us a chance to recover but, for now, we have to learn the lesons of why tonight went wrong.

  4. Outcoached, outthought, outfought, and slow as a week in jail. Losing to a team nine points behind a team the Hun scored SEVEN against in two games says it all. Simunovic needs punted forthwith. His disastrous game against PSG presaged this farce. Compare the Danish center backs to him. They are the reason they are now 29 games in Europe without conceding more than one goal. They have three attempts at goal and score all three? Just ridiculous.

Odsonne’s lack of pace really showed tonight. Just too slow to be effective.

Man City went one down yesterday. Within 60 seconds, they had a sub ready. How long did an indecisive Lennon take to react and get Griffiths on? Far too long.

Seven goals lost at home to Cluj and Copenhagen from winning positions. Not good enough, and seriously pissed off. Our manager was found out tonight, and big time. We were gubbed, and three weeks before the Bigotdome clash, which is looming large.

  5. I get the, league is more important but a club of our size and resources surely we can aspire to a bit of both.

Right up until the window closed several posters including myself were crying out for a bit of quality , nous and experience at centre half and centre Midfield.

Two names available and mentioned regularly were Benkovic and Wanyama.

Tonight we lost that game largely because of options at both centre back and centre midfield.

Very approx figures, but i reckon we could have acquired both for 80K a week. So for 16 weeks or so your looking at approx 1.3M.

Tonight’s failure against a real average at best has cost us minimum 3M not to mention co efficient points and European exposure, where is the sense in that?

Instead we brought in 2 players who can’t even make the 18 squad, these guys must be earning around at least 30K between them yet their miles away. I’m not making snap judgements on these 2 as yet but if your sure that 5.5M spent will be profitable, surely another 1.3M for the here and now is money well spent to give you the best chance possible to make more Euro money , prestige and coefficient, when it was largely felt that strengthening these important positions would help reap dividends.

Just want us to be the best we can be but we continually leave ourselves short in vital areas and we’ve paid for that again tonight.

    Good post my friend

  7. First goal we all saw Joso screwing up. However Julienne stopped his run because he expected Jose to deal with the back pass. He let his man pass him. Then when Joso made an arse of it , Julienne tried to make up the ground and stumbled.

In defence I was always told to expect that your team mate will not clear the ball , make the tackle etc. Assume you will have to tidy up his mistake whilst hoping you won’t have to.

If Julienne had kept an eye in his man, he would have been in position to cover Joso’s and our disaster.

The second goal fiasco actually started with CalMac stupidly taking a quick free kick at halfway line ( after Eddie was fouled). Whilst

Eddie is still limping a few yards from the scene of the foul, CalMac takes a quick kick.

    Why?

Instead of waiting for the players in front of him, getting ready to receive a forward pass he played it back to Joso,

Joso under pressure returned the ball back to CalMac,

CalMac again gave it back to Joso , Joso then back to Julienne ( in front of our penalty area).

Julienne under pressure launches it to Rogic and the killer goal is the result.

That entire sequence was self inflicted.

One of our ‘ talented’ playmakers twice needlessly gave the ball to the player on our team least capable of dealing with it.

Copenhagen dictated each of those passes by pressing us back and back untill we made the error. Rogic is getting the blame , but had CalMac waited 10 seconds to allow Eddie to get upfield we should have been pressurising our opponent rather than invite them to dictate the play to us.

One final point… Eddie was limping for 10 ( or more minutes after the penalty) . Once the second Copenhagen goal was scored he should have been taken off

We only used 1 sub !!

  8. SETTINGFREETHEBEARS

You write that we have the right to be critical, but you yourself never are. I respect your always measured posts, but there is ample reason for a critique of Celtic.

When the Huns sign players, they play in the first team. Signings like Kent, Kamberi, Hagi and Edmundson have now significantly contributed to them being in tomorrow’s EL draw, while we are out in the cold. Compare that to our signings of Klimala and Soro. Nowhere near the team. Where is the add on benefit? Cheapskate signings to quell fan discontent. Well, it hasn’t worked. I am a seriously unhappy camper, and I have followed the Hoops for 57 years. In that time, I have rarely seen such farcical, laughable, comical so called defending as I witnessed tonight. A complete joke. An utter embarrassment.

  9. some people might not like it but its finally home to roost neil lennon was only a sticking plaster that our greedy chairman settled for because he had no one to replace Brendan Rodgers that’s the truth mr lawell the well known cheapskate and the excuses will be made same as always on to nine and everything forgotten ah.

  10. While I’m at it – why did it take TWELVE minutes to get Griffiths on tonight? Why did we only play one sub? Our manager repeated the same tactical mistakes he made against Cluj, and did not own up to them. Man City made a sub yesterday within 60 seconds of going one down to Madrid. We pfaff around indecisively forever, while the game goes beyond us. Seriously pissed off at our monumental, catastrophic screw ups. While I’m at it, can any of our James Forrest cheer leaders explain his chicken hearted effort to get on the end of an Elyounoussi cross in the first half? He is utterly gutless, and a waste of a jersey. A Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, John Hartson, Denis Law or Joe Jordan would have launched himself at that ball to propel it into the net. Forest? Forget it.

  11. For those blaming Neil Lennon for the tactics or line up.

How would you feel if El Yonoussi had scored first half?

Or if Tom’s header off the post had gone in?

Or if Eddie’s header had beaten the keeper on half time?

Would you say the manager had gotten the tactics and line up spot on?

What if Calum’s goal had counted?

Or if the keeper hadn’t made a lucky save off Griffiths while laying on the ground?

    Individual errors let us down.

It’s up to Neil to pick his side up and focus on the main goal.

We cannot have regressed from a poor team in one game.

I’d be worried if we don’t hammer a couple of teams starting at the weekend.

And I’m sure Neil will be good enough to make them forget a bad night.

  12. My friends in Celtic,

Absolutely gutted. I always had an element of doubt for this game ( This is not hindsight )

Yes we need to regroup quickly and move on. The league may be our priority, but this feels bad, real bad.

No matter what transpires between now and the end of the season I feel we have lost some gloss, momementum and most importantly pride.

It was horrendous watching the game at work with like minded Celtic fans, but my heart really goes out to the full house, full of expectation who were let down by schoolboy errors ; yet again.

    HH to all.

  13. Good morning CQN from a very cold and not so down now Garngad

Lazydynamite from last night great post it is only a game and health and family are everything.

I will say Again I want to win every game of football we play (next game in front of us) no difference from any Celtic supporter. But and a big but, we were never going to win the EL this season, but we can win another treble, so IMO we should throw our full weight behind Lenny and the team as we always do. Last night is done, finito, we cannot change what happened but we can try and make sure we hump every SPHell team we play. We are on the cusp of another amazing season, let’s turn our thoughts to that a Quadruple treble… Wow. Imagine that..

Yes the smsm will have a field day over the next few days with Slippy being the best thing since sliced bread, but I will guarantee you that they would swap places with us in a heartbeat.

So come all young rebels enlist whilst I sing… The team needs us for Sunday

    Hail Hail

    D. :)

  14. We found a special combination with griffs up front and Eddie able to drop back and pick up knowing he can push ball forward

Make no mistake. Neil lost us this game with poor tactics and team selection

Lack of right back cost us also

We should due our finances beat teams like Aberdeen and Motherwell week in and week out

We have the financial muscle to wipe teams like Copenhagen also. But we can’t. We don’t have a manger or a ceo to take us forward

  15. Is it safe yet?

For what it’s worth, I thought we were excellent in the first half. And even in the second until Jozo had a mare, we were comfortable. Was I the only one who thought we could win at 2-1 down? No need to go gung-ho.

We certainly gifted them the game.

Whilst I have seen us wasteful in front of goal in many previous games, I have never seen one really bad mistake make us so jittery at the back. Decision making was appalling.

Could’ve, should’ve… If Griff scores, I think we would have won easily.

It’s a grand day to be a Tim nevertheless.

  16. Reading back. Rogic getting the blame for the second goal? And slated for being poor overall.

I thought the big man was terrific, especially first half. His fault for the goal? Like he’s the only midfielder ever to have lost the ball in midfield, by slipping I may add. Isn’t that why there is a defence behind the midfield.

No idea why TR is getting flack he was MOTM

Maybe not my MOTM, but otherwise I agree.

  18. INIQUITOUSIV

Real got beat by a team 22 points behind Liverpool- football isn’t as black or white as that.

  19. BHOYLO83 on 27TH FEBRUARY 2020 10:08 PM

Thought big Tom Rogic played well and we were the better team until Simunovic made the mistake, obviously changed the game.

    ——-

    And another 👆

  20. The first goal just gets worse every time you see it. They didn’t have a sniff up till then. The brutal truth is they expected us to gift them goals, they did nothing constructive to create their opening.

  21. LAZYDYNAMITE on 27TH FEBRUARY 2020 10:11 PM

    All about perspective.

Of course nobody was amazing but Rogic was one of our better players I thought and he is gettig flak on here?

    ——-

    And again.

  22. DAVID66 on 28TH FEBRUARY 2020 6:26 AM

    So true my friend.

If you are lucky enough to wake up a Celtic supporter this morning folks please remember all the positives.

I am enjoying this season so much I refuse to turn on the team and manager after a bad night.

Despite all the mistakes we made we made enough chances against this team to win three ties over the two legs.

    That’s football.

We have a cracking team..and a cracking manager.

Do not let the moaners and the greeters get you down.

Back the manager and the team…heck you might even enjoy what is about to happen this season.

I would not swap one ounce of our domestic position for a space in the last 16 of Europes second tier competition.

The ONLY calamity we had this season was the Champions league Q failure against Cluj.

Criticism was deserved……last night all that happened was a very very good European run came to an end and we are in March tomorrow.

  23. Young or old we have all seen that movie before , high expectations laid waste after chances to kill games off go begging . One poor decision , and our dreams and team are in pieces , then a lifeline . 60,000 roaring you On , to rushed ,to gungho to sloppy in trying to get the game over the line , when a calming influence may have helped. Then in a blink its over . Done and dusted for another year , it will be raked over for three days on CQN and other sites till Sundays game comes round . Lenny and his staff and players ? Do they analyze this game ,or put it behind them quickly ? Does this game ruin a season ? For me no ,concentration on the next challenge is be all and end all .

We are still Celtic supporters .

Hush now child, and don’t you cry

Your folks might understand you, by and by

Move on up, toward your destination

You may find from time to time

    Complication

  24. ©️Paul67

“But, I could argue that Sunday’s Scottish Cup quarter final is more important”

Paul called it the other day, we have two big games coming up, St Johnstone & Livingston away, these are MUST win games, forget the Europa, just get the next two over the line.

    HH.

  25. As Celtic supporters; if we’re not deflated and depressed by last night’s result , then there is something wrong.

Generally we are realists, but accepting defeats from teams such as Copenhagen show an alarming lack of ambition.

We have the financial advantage to dwarf teams in Scotland and very often schoolboy errors will go unpunished.

We need to find consistency in playing teams with similiar resources.

    HH.

  26. Rogic and Brown shouldn’t have been on the park by the time their second goal goes in. Faded terribly.

  27. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

With the benefit of some sleep I’ve come to the conclusion last night was a tactical howler.

It’s easy to point the finger at Jozo, but Celtic set out to play the game at 100mph. Individual mistakes are likely when playing this way.

Remember, Celtic were through when the game kicked off last night. They didn’t need to play high tempo, end-to-end football.

  28. To progress in Europe we need to either play much more conservative, sit deep and protect our wobbly back line.

Or, we buy better defenders than Jozo and Ajer, that will require up to 15 million but the rewards will almost certainly be worth it.

Our lads will be hurting this morning but we’ll be hurting even more in August if we blow a CL spot because of our school boy errors.

Neil has plenty of credit in the bank so last night will not define our season. However, if the same mistakes are evident in an August CL play off tie – Lenny will have very serious questions to answer.

  29. Corkcelt @ 1025 last night. Well said. That’s lifted me and given me a bit of perspective.

I’m now no longer going to read through the rest and get my frustration bubbling up again.

    Hail hail

    ———-

The game was under control at 0-0. You have to chase the game at 0-1. They scored from their only real chances and we missed several. The vagaries of football are such. Move on.

  31. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

    You’ve missed my point.

Celtic were playing at 100mph when the game was nil nil.

There was no need to do that. It increased the likelihood of an individual mistake that would let the opposition in to the tie.

  32. I get the let’s move on and we’ve bigger priorities than the Europa.

The Europa is a bonus, the 9 is everything.

However if we don’t address our defending in Europe then we won’t see CL football for a long time and our club will regress because of that regardless of what we do domestically.

  33. DAVID17

Copenhagen had 14 shots on goal over both ties.

They had 5 efforts on target, the 4 goals and the penalty

  34. All Copenhagen’s goals and their pen came from us gifting them the chances.

The fact Copenhagen created next to nothing over two games is damning for us tbh.

We deserved everything we got and we will do so again next season if we don’t learn how to defend competently at this level.
