  1. On way back from Parkhead.

It’s a hell of a lot more difficult to create than destroy.

    Well done Kris Commons.

  2. Good win at this stage of the teams development , good for morale.

You can see that Zagreb a middle ranked team were very sharp but lacked the killer touch , if we could reach their levels of sharpness , added to our guile then RD will have cracked it.

still long term project on last point

  3. Happy with three points. Best team lost but we were without 9 players tonight. Thought we were better in first half but they dominated the second.

  4. Our goal tonight was very similar to Barca’s 1st agin PSG, the lay off from Anto was even better than Inesta’s to Messi >}

We are going to get there under this coach, of that I have no doubt.

Total numpties on here blaming the coach for the players failing to control te ball, from where I am reading and watching, I know fine well where the numpties are.

The system we play is hindering us greatly and until this changes or the players become superhuman athletes then we will continue to struggle. Top class Goal Keeping, good defending at times and abysmal striking from Zagreb got us the 3 points tonight. We look disjointed, lack composure from midfield to front and our shape at times is unfathomable.

A win is a win but vast improvements are needed.

  7. Thought so much of the game hinged on 1 man.

All his frailties were there to see and he lost us possession so many times yet the quality that he has was(well…..apart from Craig Gordons performance)the difference in the end.

  8. I don’t understand why Celtic fans would say after tonights match –

“if it wasn’t for Craig Gordon”.

    Think about it –

Ronny Deila admits he is happy Celtic beat Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 in the Europa League this evening, but has revealed a simmering anger for the Bhoys to improve.

Deila’s men were involved in a thrilling Europa League contest at Celtic Park, which ebbed and flowed and saw both sides enjoy chances.

Dinamo Zagreb quickly proved themselves a threat, but it was Celtic who took the lead through Kris Commons in the sixth minute.

The Croatian side were not dismayed however and continued to spray the ball around, showing nice touches and adding energy to their game.

But no breakthrough came, Bhoys goalkeeper Craig Gordon in inspired form, and Celtic increasingly adopted a defensive approach as the match drew to a close.

Deila was left happy, but angry because of his wish to see Celtic play better football.

“In the end it was fantastic team spirit. We have to take that with us but we need better passing. We have a good chance of getting the ten points I think we will need”, he told reporters post-match.

“It is important for us to test ourselves against good teams but we need to have longer periods like the first half”, he continued.

“I am happy to win but there is anger inside me to play better. Our players worked so hard and we will continue developing.”

Celtic now have four points after two group games. The group’s other match saw Red Bull Salzburg win 2-1 away at Astra.

  10. bournesouprecipe on

Great result for Celtic, and fine performance against the very good Croatian Champions side.

Celtic started well and got the goal that separated the points, and had Kris Commons not been so shocked at the Keeper’s mistake, we’d have made it two and it would have been a very different game?

Zagreb took the upperhand from fairly early in the game and the longer it went, the more we were fortunate to get all three points. More focussed defending and a taken chance, game time into our season was the margin between this, and Maribor.

The withdrawal of Kris Commons and introduction of Beram Kayal was welcome, if not late, Zagreb happily lacked a finisher, and we are blessed with Craig Gordon and better defending, that sets us up for back to back wins against Astra, and progress in the EL.

Denayer had another fine game, but wasn’t let down by any of the rest. There’s no question that Brown and Johansen were immense in effort, but the frenetics, will only take us to a certain level in Europe, and the missing midfield ingredient is still weighty IMHO.

Were you at the gym again tonight? Can’t wait to see the new Arnoldesk physick ;) at the next hootenanny.

  12. Incidentally, I also thought the team played in a slightly better shape without young Calum ?

Anyone any idea how far away, Lustig, Mathews and Forrest are from a return ?

Also what was issue with Biton, not on bench tonight ?

  14. Just back from the ground.

Happy to have taken 4 points from 6 but Craig Gordon earned 3.95 of those points.

Gordon, Brown, and the two Centre Backs had good games.

Commons and Stokes provided flashes but not enough. Mubarak and Johansen worked hard but were not too creative. Efe ran and never hid but his confidence to do anything creative seems shot. Izzy and Tonev were exploited in defence.

We had a good opening 20 minutes but Zagreb dominated from there on.

We are not a good enough team yet but we are in a good and fortunate position to make progress. If we can beat the Romanians home and away, we will qualify and that earns the coach more time to generate improvement.

Don’t know, but I’d leave Forrest alone until the New Year at least to make sure he makes a full recovery.

If he pulls a muscle or hamstring in January, release him.

  16. “I’ll take a scrappy 1-0”

“FFS we only won 1-0 and our keeper made tons of saves”

I thought we did well against a good footballing team. You would expect them to come out and attack after going 1-0 down. If you watch the game knowing the score it will look a lot better…

    “Frenetics”

Good word encapsulating more than one of our players.

If they can better control that energy and effort we’ll be much better off.

  21. Two pieces of good news from tonight. I saw Lustig, Fisher, Forrest, Biton and Guidetti in the Players Viewing are for the match. All were drinking water and no pies or chips were consumed by the players that I saw.

The second bright spot was the Celtic fans performance of COYBIG at Dalmarnock Station after the match. It fair lifted the spirits to hear them in good form on an uncomfortable but winning night.

  22. In my time supporting and watching Celtic I have seen loads of games like tonights, when the better team (us) had more possession and more chances and lost.

Football is not an exact science.

    Shit happens sometimes.

I’m glad of the forthcoming international break, hopefully us some breathing space to get some players back.

I think we desperately need Mikael Lustig or Adam Mathews back, would be good too how James Forrest would play in Ronny’s team set up

(Incidentally would also like Charlie Mulgrew back in the squad)

    Thank you Ronny & Celtic

    Good night all

A lot on here seem to have forgotten the injury problems we had tonight, plus no Guidetti.

In all the circumstances I am over the moon with the result.

    3 points.

    A clean sheet

    A boost to morale.

    Top of the group.

    What’s not to like?

  27. mullet and co 2 on

I don’t think Zagreb were poor in terms of finishing. Most of their chances came from great technique to get the ball on target. Fortunately Craig Gordon is our goalkeeper. It wasn’t as though Zagreb were straight through on goal on a number of occasions. Most of their shots came from longish range efforts. We should have had two in the first half.

  28. Go tell the Spartim on

I am astounded of forehead that anyone is surprised that we struggle from middle to front, have they not been watching Celtic for the last 3 or 4 years. Some players are either struggling with their own form or they just don’t have it. I concur with TET. It’s the players that can’t pass, it’s not like the players aren’t open just that our passing is rank

  29. Craigellachie10 on

Well done lhads. For effort alone deserved the win, and on that point it certainly looked like the players are willing to fight for their manager.

Some very good posts from you today re the fitness issue, agree 100% with you.

The coach can only do so much, the rest is up to the players, if they can’t get their head around the system, they will be moved on for players who do., tis really no rocket science, either is controlling the ball, we have far too many who let themselfs, and the team down in that dept.

Another thing overlooked is that DZ are Croatian champions, and undefeated all season prior to this evening.

  32. Great result tonight. Some good performances. Lots of unseen graft and unheralded work from A TEAM performance. Sure we carried luck. But we didn’t v Maribor so not complaining about that.

The Romanians will be no pushovers. I think this group will go all the way to Zagreb in December but hoping I am wrong.
