I don’t think the previous Olympic spirit was worth defending.

It was largely a movement of gentlemen sportsmen, that saw professional sport as a way for working men to escape poverty and they excluded them as they did not want to compete with them, preferring to leave events to moneyed part timers.

I remember Joe Gormley said about the Bannister 4 minute mile that they could have broken the record a decade earlier if they’d thrown a pair of spiked running shoes down any Yorkshire pit.

I don’t think there ever was a golden age of amateurs with an equal chance. Even in the 60s and 70s, top athletes needed sponsors for their training commitments. Unfortunately, drug cheating was a bigger issue than professionalism. The careers of promising Scots sprinters Elliot Bunney and Jamie Henderson were testimony to the sacrifices made by clean athletes.

The Olympics is following inevitable TV-driven commercial trends. There is no need for football, tennis or golf to be there but you stand no chance of standing in the way of such developments.

  2. Have E-Mailed Sky to find out if they are not covering Scottish Premier League football this year, as if not will be cancelling my sports package. Will let the blog know what response I get.

I got a little surprise in mid May just there that I will be dad for the first time. I am finding out I have a lot to learn!

Didn´t catch the game, sounds like it wasn´t anything like our 1st team playing and it was a simply fitness boosting friendly.

Arrive in Glasgow next Wednesday and looking forward to the real action kicking off. Taking my missus to Parkhead for the first time. With her being pregnant, the bump is coming too, does that count as my wee one´s first Celtic game? Hope we get a decent win.

Cheers SonOfDan, who was very certain our game would be on the Wednesday, helped me sort out my plans for my visit home to catch the game.

I want Celtic to be European giants but I am realistic. We need to rear our own players and that may take years. I’m just happy that my child will be able to go to celtic park and cheer on the same team as me and my father did. God bless Fergus wherever you are.

    Last night ?

An improvement- but —– slow /pedestrian and way too fond of the safe but going nowhere square ball . Off the ball movement seems to be an anathema to many . Punchless up front .

Twardzik looks as though he can play football..

Our next opponents , Inter , won 3-2 away to no mark Como . 4th pre season win in a row . .

Inter fined 3 players a total of 40 ,000 euros for being overweight after the summer break . Fixed penalty of 10,000 euros a kilo . One of the players was therefore 2 kilos overweight .!.[ the shame / the disgrace / ]

Inter would gladly settle for a next to no physical contact 0-0 friendly . . Practice tactics , try different formations etc but if Celtic make it a physical contest Inter will take the hump and retaliate..

Inter would expect to beat Ajax. Good team —— . Players to watch Rannochia [ ” the new Nesta }, Palacio [ Argentine winger signed from Genoa] and Coutinho [ fabulously skilled Brazilian attacking midfielder ].

Have now seen more of Helsinki —– no great shakes -but they have the basics . —–pace , technique and game intelligence . They don’t seem to be scared of the ball . They have serious pace up front..

Will we still be seeded whatever all they teams are beatable !

    +++++

Yes, we will definitely be seeded in the Play-off round after we beat HJK.

As that infers, for others asking, yes, there is another round of qualifiers before the Group Stage. This suits me fine as it means we have another two games on the ole whetstone.

  16. Morning,

Reading that Duff&Duffer have not returned the SPL share in order for it to be processed for Dundee.

Does it look like the Willie Wonka Gold Ticket I wonder…

  17. Stewart Regan has played down expectations that Sevco will be given SFA membership today.

Yesterday Ibrox chief Charles Green told the Rangers website that he expected to have a licence within 24 hours giving Ally McCoist the go-ahead to start signing players.

This morning however Regan has put a dampener on that by revealing that the issue is far from cut and dried.

He told the Daily Record: “It could possibly be settled in 24 hours but there are still a number of issues to resolve and it will require a lot of action from our lawyers.”

The issue of membership must go before the board of the SFA with time at a premium before Sunday’s Ramsdens Cup tie at Brechin.

The SFL website doesn’t list Brechin’s opponents although tickets have been sold for a fixture against Rangers.

The issue of a name could be one of the problems for the SFA to overcome knowing that Rangers are in liquidation and that HMRC take a tough line on phoenix businesses trading on the goodwill and reputation of liquidated companies.

How can they not return the share? It’s not theirs and surely there’s nothing physical to return anyway?

  20. First, further to the late night CQN badge ‘debate’, I had the pleasure of meeting Bundoran Bhoy to collect my badges from my first ‘live’ CQNer. Excellent craic, almost a CQN Induction, and I can attest to both his sobriety and the quality of his badges for a great cause. So ‘Buy from Bundoran’ is the campaign (sorry CRC, but your quizzes are pretty good).

On to the Match, mugged again late due to sloppy defending. Can’t give the ball away cheaply. It was almost as if they had been told that at all costs hold on to the ball, which meant few if any decisive defence splitting passes and over much passing the ball across midfield. Not exciting, and I fear on Saturday we may have both sides doing the same thing, so few goals. Also agree with HT that Bangura, Murphy and Wilson are just not CFC class. Lenny must bite the bullet there.

Big plus for me for my first match ensconced in WS1, was watching the GB entertain the hard souls who turned up. Looking forward to Saturday already.

Not seen it mentioned but Phil’s latest article from the other day claims SFA members’ families have been threatened since McOist’s latest diatribe.

…..And still the football authorities entertain this shower !!

And to think we used to get called paranoid for claiming they got the odd dodgy penalty.

It seems that the ‘share’ does indeed exist and rangers are not giving it back.

Ye canny shove yer Granny aff the bus?

  25. THE Football Association have told Southampton not to give the fee for Steven Davis straight to Rangers newco.

The agreed sum of around £750,000 has still to be paid and the FA have told the Barclays Premier League club that, for the time being, they should send it to the SFA.

Southampton officially confirmed 19 days ago that they had signed the former Ibrox captain and, although Rangers newco revealed last weekend a fee had been agreed between the clubs, no money has yet changed hands.

Herald Sport understands that instead of placing the money with the SFA, both Southampton and Rangers newco have agreed to delay the financial transaction until membership of the SFA is approved.

The FA intervened because of the uncertainty that still hangs over Rangers. Oldco Rangers were not entitled to the money because it sold the players’ registrations to the newco, and the newco cannot take any money for Davis either because it is not a football club until it has been granted SFA membership.

After reports last night that talks between Rangers newco and the governing bodies were deadlocked, more discussions are likely to take place today. However, it is only once those reach some sort of resolution, and Rangers have received SFA membership, that the FA permit Southampton to send the money to Ibrox.

Green has tried to negotiate fees for most of the players who have left Ibrox this summer, but was successful in doing so only with Davis and Southampton. Others – such as Everton with Steven Naismith and Norwich City with Steven Whittaker – opposed his view that players who refused to allow their contracts to be transferred from the oldco to the newco were in breach of contract.

Except for Southampton, none agreed with him that Rangers newco were entitled to fees for the departing players. By agreeing a settlement, Southampton were able to process the deal without awaiting FIFA clearance.

  26. ASonOfDan –

“The issue of a name could be one of the problems for the SFA to overcome knowing that Rangers are in liquidation and that HMRC take a tough line on phoenix businesses trading on the goodwill and reputation of liquidated companies.”

WHAT!?! How can this be true….they are the same club! If this was true the papers would be all over it as they are filled with Rangers haters. I mean it is not like there is even a precedence for this some 15 miles from Hampden.

This is one of the several final chuckles headed our way before reality bites.

  27. Regarding the sale of Davis to Southampton, it provides a compelling snapshot of under valuation in the sale to Sevco… Presumably in the asset sale to Mr Green a high value item like Davis was itemised – What value was placed against him, and how can BDO possibly accept that value was increased multiple-fold in the sale to Southampton 4 weeks later (£750K we learn) without being massively undervalued by D&P? This is so blatant and should stop this entire charade in it’s tracks, pending a reassessment of the ‘buy out’. If 750K can be realised so easily for Newco, why was it not realised for the creditors of oldco?

  28. RogueLeader

Between that and the FA stopping any payments to Sevco, l think reality is about to boot them in the chucks.
