I like the below-radar way Celtic have operated this transfer window. Mikael Lustig arrived early without much of a murmur and Rabiu Ibrahim’s trial and signing went through with casual understatement, while Jaroslaw Fojut completed a pre-contract agreement before many of us had even reached his Wikipedia page.
Most of the headlines surrounding Celtic have been in connection with English clubs wanting our players, closely followed by public declarations of ‘I’m going nowhere’ from the players in question.
Compare and contrast with the situation over the city. Almost daily Nikica Jelavic has to deal with a completely different scenario his club have placed him in, today telling STV, “The manager appreciates me and likes me, but I know the club are in a difficult financial situation and if they decided they needed to sell me, I would accept it.”
If you bump into Nikica tell him he’s talking rubbish. His club were recently bought by a billionaire, they have no financial difficulties and they are reliably informed they are going to win their tax case. Rangers players telling the media that their club are in a “difficult financial situation” are miles off-message.

Supporters ‘mystified’ by Rangers youth plan

Rangers Supporters’ Trust once again find themselves at loggerheads with the club over last week’s announcement of the controversial, and somewhat baffling, Rangers Youth Development Limited, claiming it appears to be little more than “an accounting trick.”
Trust spokesman Colin Glass was at pains not to condemn the scheme outright but he and his fellow members remain skeptical of the new business.
The idea is that the subsidiary company should be self-financing rather than a drain on Rangers’ depleted resources. Young talent from throughout Europe, but predominantly Scotland, will be developed and then sold, either to Rangers or elsewhere. Four businessmen have contributed £1 million to kick-start the project but the rank and file have yet to be convinced of its worth.
“We don’t automatically oppose every idea the board comes up with,” said Glass. “We simply find it odd that this announcement was made in April, the club stated on their website that it has been up and running since January and a check with Companies’ House confirmed that it was registered in November.
“We’re concerned with the general lack of information on this issue and we would like more transparency. It just looks like a short-term mechanism to ease the cash-flow problems. Clubs like Ajax, who are famed for their youth development, don’t have such a system.”
“Everyone is mystified by this initiative and last week’s announcement raised more questions than answers.”
Part of the agreement with the new company is that Rangers must pay them compensation whenever a young player makes 10 first-team appearances. This decision to sub-contract the nurturing of future players to a separate entity has perplexed fans, who fail to understand why their club should now pay such a fee where previously none was required.
A statement issued by the Trust yesterday said: “Following widespread, and often heated, debate among Rangers supporters (and not just Trust members) regarding this new venture, it seems that this looks like nothing more than an accounting trick to help minimize the club’s current cash-flow problems.”

Neil Warnock has warned Rangers they will toil to get £10million for Nikica Jelavic.
The former Queens Park Rangers boss was speaking out as West Ham had an offer of £5m plus £1m in add-ons rejected by the Ibrox club.
The Upton Park outfit began informal negotiations last week and, according to Rangers sources, followed that up with a firm proposal.
On Wednesday, however, senior figures at West Ham said they are ready to move on to other targets.
Rangers will now step up efforts to sell the 17-goal striker for as close to £10m as possible, with manager Ally McCoist hamstrung in his efforts to sign new players until the sale goes through.
Warnock considered buying the Ibrox club’s top scorer before being sacked by QPR a fortnight ago and last night told Sportsmail: ‘I know what Rangers value him at. But whether they get anywhere near that is another matter.
‘I would be surprised if anybody paid that much and were not very impressed, if I’m honest. We watched him for a few weeks and he didn’t seem much to write home about.’
Warnock tracked Jelavic and Rangers keeper Allan McGregor after targeting three or four new players for his struggling side.
Sacked by wealthy owner Tony Fernandes, however, Warnock explained why he passed on Jelavic when he added: ‘He has ability, no question. But I don’t know if anybody knows for certain if he is a Premiership player — and that’s the problem. If you are going to pay what Rangers want, then the player has to be proven as a Premiership player, haven’t they? You could get Jermain Defoe for £10m.
‘I don’t know, other people might see it differently. People always want strikers, especially at this time of year. It comes down to whatever someone thinks he is worth.’
Rangers hope news of a firm bid from West Ham will drag other interested clubs out of the woodwork, with new QPR boss Mark Hughes joining Liverpool and Sunderland in the list of interested clubs.
If or when Jelavic finally goes, Rangers are set to approach Rapid Vienna striker Hamid Sahili.
The Albanian, also linked with Celtic, is out of contract in the summer and available this month for a knockdown fee after being told he can leave.
Sources close to Sahili claim Rangers have placed him on standby to replace Jelavic.
