Celtic’s heroes wanted home and fit 8 days from Champions League

325

Delighted as we all are for the success of the Scotland team, flush with six Celtic players in Friday’s starting line-up, Brendan Rodgers will primarily be hoping they, and our many other players on international duty, come through the remaining World Cup qualifiers unscathed.

On Friday we are at Hamilton, but one week tomorrow we face PSG at Celtic Park, against a team who have scored 14 goals in four league games last month – then signed striker, Kylian Mbappe from Monaco.

The one player who could have done with some international game time is Jozo Simunovic, but he managed only the bench as Bosnia easy past Gibraltar. Hamilton’s artificial surface is not the place Brendan would want to give his central defender a run out, after being rested for visit to similar surfaces at Kilmarnock at Astana.  Jozo is fit, so could go straight into the team for Tuesday, but I’m sure the manager would prefer him to have an outing first.

Not that I’m nervous about Tuesday, of course.

  1. Tuned into the England game obviously hoping they can do Scotland a favour, listen to Clive Tyldesley for one minute and I’m suddenly supporting Slovakia, what a creep of a msn.

Leigh seems to be moving freely.

Wonder if he decided that he had done enough.

    :-)

  4. Houl Yer Wheest–there was never anyone called McGoldrick played for the Freemen. JOHN McNally, Olympic boxing silver medalist, started the band. You may be mixing up bands.

  5. The English commentators are the exact opposite of their miserable and negative Scottish counterparts.

They praise constantly and bum up mediocrity and never see their team commit a foul.

The exact opposite of the negative nellies in the mssm who are now having to commentate through gritted teeth at the sight of so many Tims in a Scotland shirt.

Scotland pressing for badly needed goals.

Remembering Malta`s late capitulation to England ?

  7. The price paid for Oxlade – Chamberlin shows how mental the English market is.

He is a big strong boy with average skill and zero game intelligence.

He supposedly left Arsenal as he sees himself as a central midfield general.

Self delusion is a wonderful quality to possess.

goals don’t matter against the bottom team in the group, the results are discounted

Not that it will come down to that, we need to win the last two games as Slovakia have us and then Malta (we are unlikely to be tied with anyone)

  11. This can’t come to goal difference- we need to win both games – not easy, but at least it is there – no ambiguity

Sparky looks doubtfull for Friday night so it looks like the new bhoy will get his chance. We need to hope we have no other injuries after the International break we have a huge game coming up on Tuesday. H.H.

  13. Macjay.

Goal difference DOES count in determining positions in Group if level on points.

The results against the bottom team are disregarded when determining the best runners up from the groups. There are 9 groups but only best 8 runners up go through to the play offs.

    Jinkyredstar.

The runners up slot could quite easily be decided on goal difference, we beat Slovakia and draw with Slovenia and Slovakia beat Malta big of us on 18 points. Slovakia second on goal difference.

    Hail Hail

You are definitely right about the best runners up scenario, but I am not sure about the group goal difference, however it wouldn’t be the first time I was wrong. Unfortunately the two three nothing defeats mean it’s all about winning twice anyway

  15. Hopefully Griff is fine but if not we now have Paddy and Edouard to add firepower.

The England game was a good example of how important a role coaching has in the modern game,

Slovakia had some very good technical players but were overpowered by a bigger stronger team and a lack of self belief.

England have some good players but quite a few who prove how overrated the EPL is and a coach who brings very little.

Looked like it was not only the English who bought the best league in the world bullshit today.

Slovakia are a decent team who do not have the belief to beat the bigger nations but their mindset against Scotland will make them a more formidable foe than the one we saw today.

The first criteria in the event of a tie is ‘head to head’ so if there is a three way tie

We would win if we beat Slovakia by 4 clear goals and draw with Slovenia

If we draw with Slovenia we win on head to head against the so they are out of the running

  17. Sorry posted early

If we all end up on the same points AND we don’t win the head to head with Slovakia then We are out regardless of goals

Two wins and we are ‘possibly’ in the play offs
