Champions League perils for play-off seeds

479

The Champions League play-off round can be a horrible place for seeds against teams with lesser reputations.  Celtic drew Helsingborgs from a group of five possible teams.  Three of the other four were away from home in the first leg but two recorded wins.

Hapoel Kiryat Shmona lost 2-0 away to Bate Borisov while Maribor lost 2-1 away to Dinamo (no longer Croatia) Zagreb.

Romanians, Cluj, recorded an excellent 1-2 away win against our old friends Basel, while AEL Limassol beat Anderlecht 2-1 in Cyprus.  Maribor and Cluj will fancy their chances of eliminating the seed, while Limassol have a fighting chance.

In other news, HJK Helsinki are not going to drop to the Europa League group stage after we eliminated them from the Champions League earlier this month.  Last season’s finalists, Athletic Bilbao, hit them for six (first cricket metaphor on CQN?) last night.

I thought it had been established from a credible source at Celtic the fee was £6.3 Million.

  2. Looks like the numbers have been crunched and the Japanese market is more bountiful than the South Korean.

If thats the true figure then i take back my comment. I do find it strange that Ki would leave Celtic for Swansea. No disrespect to Swansea ,but we are massive compared to them. Maybe Arsenal or Liverpool, but signing for Swansea ends his chances of winning anything or competing against the best in Europe.

It makes ones sleep at night much more exciting doesn´t it ;-)

Until a wee fleeting nightmare about ripping of young African players seemingly much more profitable brings in some doubts.

What world markets have we dominated and carved a niche out of already since PL arrived

Japan, Poland, China, Australian, South Korea

Does the 5 year plan have a 5 year country cycle – back to Japan now.

Sorry to hear that James Keatings is away to Hamilton on loan.

Had high hopes for the bhoy – but Lenny does not seem to rate him. Then he goes out and buys Murphy and Bangura!

Gonnae stick my neck out and say that if he stays clear of injuries he will be leading scorer in SFL1 this season!

  9. Stupid huns, life would be boring without them. The below may explain Jim Park…

‘Whyte does not wish to hand back his shares. Not all of them at any rate.

Shamefully, he insists the best he can do for Rangers is to let 65.3 per cent of them pass into the hands of the people who will have to clean up his mess.

Whyte wants to keep 20 per cent of them for himself, presumably in the hope that the actions of the next owner might actually make them worth something. In other words, Whyte wants to sit back and cash in while someone else sifts through the carnage. He wants a pay day for his lies, mismanagement and deceit.

The man who stopped paying tax on the club’s wage bill – and who lumbered Rangers with a new debt mountain of £55m in just 10 months – now somehow believes he deserves his big reward.

He is also holding out for the right to appoint two directors on to the next board, men of his choosing who will be there, no doubt, to look after his best interests. And just so he can keep an eye on things, Whyte is also looking for two season tickets. Every season. For life.’

It might also double or treble his pay packet!

And on the footballing side of things he should get more first team action for Swansea than he would with any of the top 4,5 or 6 teams down there.

I know I will probably be in a minority of one here but

I don’t think that Murphy or Bangura have had the opportunity

Not so far as I have seen up until now anyway.

    kdc,

Just thought i would say that for me Ki is a very good player and i personally would rather have let Kayal go. He always appears to get injured. Ki for me has more ability and would be a better choice longterm. Joining Swansea is a bad move in my opinion as i have already stated. But i wish him good luck for the future. I would also agree we do need a win on Saturday .

    Chinese players – poor.

Polish Players – generally good footballers but whatever it is about them culturally they have seemed too easily integrated in to the night life and fondness for pastries and deep fried foods in the west of Scotland……….. What Kayal should do (and Rogne too) is have a look round the football world find a player who is never injured and buy his fitness history. Who needs physios?

  20. kevjungle – murdo..10 men championees..1979

Sticking ma neck oot here 2 m8,but from all a have seen off them, which is pretty much everytime they have played, they are just not good enough.

    Hail hail

  21. Kayal injured again?

    A weakness there somewhere?

I’d punt him for a few million if possible, offer Big Vic improved terms.

Ledley should be wrapped in cotton wool and shelved until the CL group games. His nous will be vital there.

So the team for Wednesday picks itself, injuries barring tomorrow:

    Forster

    Matthews, Rogne, Mulgrew, Izzy

    Forrest, Broon, Commons, Wanyama, Sammi

    Hooper.

  22. David Peter Deans on

    KevJungle,

If your right with regards to Ki value of becoming a £30 million asset. I hope we have included a sell on clause in is sale.

  23. The Battered Bunnet on

    Purely my own opinion but…

Beram Kayal is the best player in our current squad.

Wanyama, Forster and particularly Matthews may achieve a higher level in due course, but Kayal is a terrific player, and the best we’ve had in the middle of the park since Paul Lambert.

His injury record is one of misfortune rather than fragility.

All in my opinion of course.

  24. Ljungberg retires…cue the jocular replies, another jersey selling exercise that backfired.

  25. Ki gong to Swansea is a microcosm of those who would like Celtic to play in the EPL. Money, visibility and Kudos.

He might even be naive enough to mix these features up with ambition. If he can get more of each than he probably views Swansea as more ambitious.

We now have a culture that views ‘fortune and glory’ as inseparable twins, with the fortune sibling first out of the womb.

Sadly they aint. That first born is more likely to be Cain and about to strangle the real glory of Abel at birth, and then ‘mourn’ his brother in the name of ‘progress’.

Still in a decade or two, who will care. No-one misses the mitre mouldmaster anymore – although I hear it is still used ‘pour encourager les autres’ in Guantanamo!

  27. I would give Lustik another game at CB,he looked decent there a few weeks ago.We will need some experience in there come Wednesday.

  28. TBB – I think Kayal chases after the ball and leaves the middle of the park exposed. He is also beaten very easily. I thought he was great when I first seen him and had a great game against them at Ibrox but I haven’t been impressed with him or his performances for a while now.

  29. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

    KevJungle

You could add the list of young players (someone posted) earlier who we have loaned out in recent years who never got a chance.

I fear for the likes of McGeoch and Watt. Right now they are in the same category as McGowan et al who although very good youngsters/outstanding prospects, but never got a chance.

How many players have we brought through from the youths/reserves to established first teamers in the last 5 years, apart from Aiden?

Our recent record for bringing on youngsters to play senior football for Celtic is pathetic.

Why we persist with the youth academy and all the attendant staff is totally beyond me.

The annual cost must be staggering.

If I performed at my work the way Mccart and company are performing, I would have sacked myself years ago.

Or perhaps it’s the manager I should be having a go at for not giving youth a chance.

Or is he above critisism on this blog?
