Cheers, Magners

920

Sponsorship income is harder and harder to find so securing an improved shirt deal, while others flap to secure lesser deals, is a genuine result for the Celtic commercial team.  Irish cider maker, Magners, will have their name of the Celtic shirt for three years from this summer.

This will be the first time Celtic does not share the name on their shirts with another Scottish club since the 1990s, apart from a brief period during 2012, in the weeks between Rangers being assigned to liquidation and a successor coming into existence.

The significant amount of coverage outside Scotland as a result of this season’s Champions League qualification will no doubt have contributed to Magners’ decision, as will the reputation of Celtic fans to toast their Irish heritage in good nature.

Let’s hope club, fans and sponsor can work to make this a long and successful partnership.

  1. I'm Neil Lennon (tamrabam) on

I was always a great believer that the only stat that the suits care about is the attendance at CP.

It has been mentioned that this is falling. (In my opinion it has been falling since around 2005/2006)

Probably now the only question is how low will the attendances fall to? As a youngster I went to the old CP when an average attendance was around 20,000. When we stood together under sack the board banner I could only dream that we would have 60k SB holders. It didn’t seem possible.

(Although we did officially bhoycott one home match and still got a crowd of 10,000)

But don’t dismiss when posters are warning of the consequences of falling attendances

Currently our CL heroics are keeping us interested, but we may need more of the same over the next few seasons to hold attendances as they are. and we may need to repeat the same CL performances again next season, merely to stand still.

I don’t see anything in the all new shiny SPL reconstruction that is likely to increase attendances.

Contrary to previous seasons, I don’t reckon the Marquee signing will make much difference either.

If we struggled to give away 5,000 tickets for free, it’s hard to see how we can expect an additional 5,000 paying fans next season

If we don’t have CL success, we can always sell our best players every season, but that sounds a bit like the old boards strategy doesn’t it?

This is not to say I’m not enjoying last 16, or lapping up sevcos position but it’s the job of the suits to look ahead and im afraid that they will need to be quite creative to get 60k back into CP regularly.

  2. Chuckles Green is looking at a possible drying up of cash in the next eighteen months. No promotion means no increase in Season books and seats. The realisation that they will be playing Elgin and Annan again next season will diminish the attendances.

Their fans only enjoy it while they are winning. They are the Peepil after all.

Players will reconsider their position. New players of any decent standard that are being lined up for Sept will look elsewhere.

I understand Chuckles shares are tied up for six months or a year? Time for the fat black taxi to the airport blaming all and sundry apart from the wonderful support for his moving on.

Chuckles will be back playing in England before Newco. May be he is taking Newco with him to a newly formed Yorkshire League.

Barnsley, Rotherham, Huddersfield, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday and United.

Kano got sick one night, very sick. If it was not for so many Celtic Supporters, from so many places, then Kano would be an ornament in a sterile hospital room. That is not nice because Kano still breathes and he still thinks and he is still a Celtic Supporter to his very core.

A lot of money, by a lot of people, was raised to take Kano home. He can’t ever balance the books, but he’d love to.

None of us gets more than one go on the roundabout of life.

Celtic is celebrating their 125th Birthday and indelibly stamping it into their history by encouraging all to embrace the simple ethos of the clubs founding… let’s try and help those who just don’t have more than the air that they breathe.

A lot of Celtic Supporters are doing a lot of different things to raise money for to help those less fortunate than ourselves. To a lot of people that is no big deal.

I’m determined to help Kano pay back the kindness shown to him by the Celtic Support by supporting my club to help unfortunates. No big deal.

There are some from here who have said they will help me to help Kano to help Celtic to help others.

I give up the bevie for 125 days and I give up posting on here for 125 days as of the 1st Jan.. No big deal really, Kano has done both for the best part of four years.

I ‘m going to put a wee bit aside for each day that I don’t drink or post and forward it to Celtic to hopefully fill a belly that needs a feed or to make an unfortunate hope where only darkness is their dawn.(but maybe I can have St. Pat’s day off so I can share a day with some good Tims)

I’ve only one life and when I’m gone I soon be forgotten but if I’ve ever managed to feed one hungry person, if only for one day, then my life was worth something.

No big deal to me or you but the person I fed, he/she will never know where the food came from and they won’t ever be visiting my grave to put some pretty flowers at the base of a head-stone, they’ll be too busy worrying about tomorrow.

I can live with that and like Kano, once I’m gone, I’ll know that I never changed the world, hardly left a mark, but still I took to Celtic and I did something to try and ease the pain of others… sort of the Celtic way.

Our average attendance so far this season is still the 16th best in our history. We are still in a period of extremely high attendances, although we have probably peaked and are on a downward slide. If they want to sell an additional 5-10k season tickets next season then there is a simple answer, reduce prices. £635 for 19 SPL games & 1 Euro qualifier is not good value for money, particularly during a recession. Cheaper tickets = Bigger Crowds = More Money on catering/merchandising. There will be an optimum price that will maximise revenue and minimise price, i’m sure there’s a lot of clever people at Celtic who know this and can work it out.

Well done to Celtic and PL,just goes to show why they are in charge and were champions, how many players can be bought with 25m in the lower divisions?

  10. Have never understood why any Celtic fan or member of the working class would voluntarily give Rupert Murdoch even a single very thin dime.

  11. In work so haven’t had time to sroll back…

Regarding the Magners deal and in hindsight, I wonder if this was why PL was quick to issue a statement after Dundee.

Not saying he was right to do so but I could understand if he just about had the deal in the bag and reacted quickly to appease the sponsors and negate further bad publicity. Just my opinion…..

Media claiming that talks continue . Some outlets are claiming that Juve have told Drogba ——- we are offering this —–it’s time to say Yes or No. Some outlets are claiming that the sticking point is Drogba’s insistence that Juve pay him a massive signing on fee [ in addition to an agreed 7 million euros [ after tax ]over 18 months.

There are media claims that if Drogba doesn’t say Yes —Juve will try to get Llorente now rather than in the summer .

Well I guess it’s a fair point that our attendances are still so high, it’s a bit depressing though to think/accept that we may never return to the days of the full stadium week in week out.

About 6 or 7 years ago even the most pessimistic of mineshafters (probably me !) wouldn’t have foreseen that our attendances would have fallen so far.

They may have a bit further to fall if something creative is not done and regardless that this is apparently our 16th highest attendances, it doesn’t help if next seaon becomes our 17th highest and so on. Because it means we are probably heading in the wrong direction as far as bums on seats goes anyway

A wee note for Kev Jungle when he returns.

I am that Celtic fan whom you have educated – the scales have fallen from my eyes.

Despite last 16 in CL, top of SPL, Sevco stuffed in Div 3 etc. – I have looked out my pitchfork, flaming torch, effigy of Peter Lawell and am now making my way to the Celtic Car Park.

So you have reached your target and can now give everybody else peace for the rest of the day…

  17. Tamrabam

I posted yesterday that the greatest threat to Celtic is not falling gates, although we should be concerned about them, but not having a league that gives access to the real prize money.

This imo is why Celtic gave up SPL prize money in order to give them an annual bite at the Black Forest Gateau and not the Empire biscuit.

Add the absence of any real rival for the Gateau for at least 4 years, by which time economics will see artificial constraints like borders and broadcasting restrictions reducing if not disappearing and you can see a survival strategy in what is unfolding.

I am not saying Celtic had this in mind from the off but circumstances presented the opportunity and we now are where we are.

It has been club policy not to budget in CL money but at £15m a pop over the next 4 years it is hard to ignore that income. Perhaps half will be factored in but it will be a factor.

10thousand SBs at £500 each provides £5m which is 1/3 less than CL income so staying in the CL is the antidote to falling gates, which of course could rise as a result of CL participation.

If you read between the lines about what PL said about reconstruction it is about giving all teams something to play for, even if that is avoiding relegation.

The game has changed with Ranger’s demise but mainstream thinking and acting on that basis has not yet. But it will.

  18. It seems to be a tradition in American Sports that at least one of their big sports, ie NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL go on strike each year. Do they have an agreement to all take turns or something?

  19. Not podium posting today but I’ll leave this with you:

In ’38 there was a show,

And Glasgow was the place to go,

A model of the Tower was football’s prize.

England sent four of the best,

They didn’t meet with much success,

Because the trophy ended up in Paradise.

And they gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay,

They gave us Johnstone, Tully, Murdoch, Auld and Hay,

And most of the football greats,

    Have passed through Parkhead’s gates,

All to play football the Glasgow Celtic way.

I guess we are both saying that CL participation over the next few seasons will counteract a lot of the effects of lost gate money. Is CL participation guaranteed ?

okay then 6 or 7 years ago if the trend continues we will be seeing 20,000 fans a week at CP and as such we may not have the cash to pay for the quality of player to gain access to the CL riches

then our problems go to another level, not as low as sevco mind you!

  24. Mountain_Bhoy is Neil Lennon on

auldheid, spot on.. remarkable comments from PL re the reconstruction.. no wonder chuckles and jabba are frothing… they have seriously missed the boat and they and their chums in the media have completely misread the situation..tough!

what needs to be done post reconstruction is pay a top notch marketing firm to market the new leagues… up until now the marketing of scottish football has been embarrassingly poor. the reason the EPL is so strong now is due to very impressive marketing from the start.

  25. Since I started back work on Monday, rants from sevco have been more regular than my bowel movements.

  26. How can anyone have a bad word to say about PL after yesterday, Great deal, PL plays his cards close to his chest and that’s how he should play them, no matter what he says he’s the bad guy. I also ignore the posters, kojo (too hard to read, maybe my failing not his) and Kevjungle who used to post not bad stuff. But on the whole the site has changed into two camps,The Happy Clappers (always positive no matter what and are usually older and right) and the Doom and Gloomers (who panic after HT if still 0-0) but there isn’t much room for real FOOTBALL debate of late, Lots of political debate, sevco,SPL’s crooks, But our own Hoops on the park, especially during a game is no fun anymore. Lots of snide comments fly around now. I used to love a beer in one hand and Keyboard in the other with mncelt describing the action to us who can’t make it to the game and don’t want to listen to poison on the radio, where we always see to be “up against it”. I wish these days would come back and the in fighting would stop. Still love the site but infighting only feeds the trolls Bhoys. 27. tamrabam- I’m probably not different to a lot of people, but over the last few years we as a household have lost significant money on mortgage endowment shortfalls and collapse in windfall shares, in my case Halifax, now Lloyds Banking Group, worth about 2% of what they were in 2007. This has set us back years.

Thats a lot to make up whilst still trying to justify the cash outlay following the hoops. Others are not so lucky.

  29. Regards the poor revenue Scottish football receives compared to similar size leagues in Europe

BT Vision will be a serious challenger to Sky’s monopoly on British football as they have the financial clout to match and even surpass them. Aside from picking up 38 EPL games for 3 years from next season, they have also acquired the UK rights to televise live Serie A, Ligue 1, Brasilerao and MSL from summer. Due to the blundering incompetence of Doncaster + the SPL chairmen who accepted such a poor deal, we are stuck with Sky/ESPN till 2017.

It is to be hoped BT Vision will enter the bidding for the new set of Scottish football rights a couple of years prior to the current one expiring

ESPN are in big, big trouble regards subscriptions from this summer onwards, having lost so much live sport
