Cheers, Magners

920

Sponsorship income is harder and harder to find so securing an improved shirt deal, while others flap to secure lesser deals, is a genuine result for the Celtic commercial team.  Irish cider maker, Magners, will have their name of the Celtic shirt for three years from this summer.

This will be the first time Celtic does not share the name on their shirts with another Scottish club since the 1990s, apart from a brief period during 2012, in the weeks between Rangers being assigned to liquidation and a successor coming into existence.

The significant amount of coverage outside Scotland as a result of this season’s Champions League qualification will no doubt have contributed to Magners’ decision, as will the reputation of Celtic fans to toast their Irish heritage in good nature.

Let’s hope club, fans and sponsor can work to make this a long and successful partnership.

Welsh Euro places are of no use to Cardiff or Swansea as they are allocated to teams playing under the auspices of the WelshFA.

It’s certainly an interesting situation then as both Swansea and Cardiff as members of the English set up enter competitions each season with the caveat that a win would not return the same prize as other competitors. What happens if Swansea finish in a CL spot?

I wonder if the English FA took advice from Uefa before last years statement on Cardiff?

Spain, you forget he has been around a long time and had many lay offs, the treatment he’s had from far smarter players who know how to hurt and get away with it, as I said Scotland would have been a dawdle.:o)

  4. TET, there are Huns with whistles, we know this, and there are incompetent Refs.

Some are the same, well most.

They will not allow skilful players play in Scotland, mostly with us, but skilful players are just not protected in Scotland, watch our Euro and FIFA refs in European and international games, night and day.

    TET,

That was never in question, 100% on that

I remember a few years ago a few on here describing how when Messi took a sore one that wasn’t punished, he just got up and got on with the game and tried to show no weakness, that’s what I remember

We have over the years been cheated in euro comps, but we have been cheated cos the big clubs have to progress, tv money dictates, I believe that to be true.

In scotland we have a mish mash of huns with whistles, and desperados who want to please their masters, collum, and total incompitents like brines who is a hun, and is only there cos he is a hun.

Clear them all out, let’s get back to playing football, makes sence to me.

  11. Corkcelt – just catching up, very hapy birthday.

Worth also stating, a couple of your posts with regards Magners/Tennants & C&C group were spot on, directors and ownership

    Hail Hail & goodnight

  12. Just to humour me, I would wager that Messi wouldn’t be half the player he is if he was playing in scotland, neither would Innesta nor would Xavi, and maybes if they had to endure scottish refs week in week out, they would consider giving up the game, but in saying that, they have the mental toughness that the likes of Ki doesn’t have, as I said, we are in the gutter when it comes to signing players, we will unearth the likes of Vic now and again, but we will have to go through a few failures to find him.

Great comment……rather than move the deck chairs………ask the powers that be……how would Messi, Iniesta and Xavi fair in our league?

It’s not the league we play in that’s causing the problem….it’s the way we allow the game to be played…..

  13. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Just did a quick “google” and it seems that Dirty Mac is indeed correct and that Swansea would qualify for an “English” spot by right under a recent UEFA directive.

However, they can’t qulaift in any way by entering the Welsh Cup.

This was not the situation in 2008 when it appeared to be at the FA’s discretion whether they would put forward Cardiff as Cup winners into the Europa Cup – and they emphatically said “no”.

So – if Celtic could gain entry into another league then it would appear that a Euro spot would be available if we won the right fair and square.

Of course, looking at Chuck Green’s statement today, it looks like Sevco will doing the grand exit before Celtic – they are just so far ahead of us in every way :)))

  14. TET, would love to see that top. To tail clear out, but patience will be the name of the game, they are on the wain, we are on the up, our influence will hold sway for a while to come.

We don’t miss Rangers, insists Celtic chief after announcing £5m Magners deal

Peter Lawwell insists he wouldn’t swap Celtic’s run in the Champions League for the return of four games a season against Rangers.

The Parkhead chief executive spoke as he announced a new three-year, £5million sponsorship deal with cider giants Magners.

The deal will see the Magners branding on Celtic shirts from next season and marks a departure from the practice of sharing shirt-sponsorship deals with arch-rivals Rangers.

The SPL champions are already due to rake in £30m from the involvement in the last 16 of the Champions League and the £1.7m a year from the Magners deal will further offset the financial void created by the absence of derby fixtures with Rangers.

Asked if he missed facing Rangers four times a season, Lawwell said: ‘Not really. There are pluses and there are minuses clearly. You miss the pluses and you don’t miss the minuses.

‘You miss the pros and not the cons, so it balances itself out.

‘But you wouldn’t swap it for the Champions League.’

Refusing to put a firm figure on the value of the Magners deal, Lawwell insisted it was a substantial sum and proof the Scottish game can still attract lucrative sponsorship deals.

The current deal with Tennent’s — owned by Magners owners the C&C Group — ends this summer and Lawwell said: ‘It’s an improved contract — I wouldn’t put any numbers on it.

‘Your kit sponsor is your biggest deal and that’s Nike. If the shirt sponsorship isn’t at that level, it’s close to it.’

Magners managing director Tom McCusker denied any slight to Rangers, insisting his firm still support the Ibrox club in some form via the Tennent’s brand.

‘We are currently involved with Rangers, because we are their shirt sponsors through the Tennent’s brand,’ he said.

‘We started negotiations with Celtic quite a while ago. And it was always our aspiration to have a three-year agreement with Celtic to take them through their 125-year anniversary — which also coincided with the Tennent’s 125-year anniversary.

‘We are currently the shirt sponsors for Rangers and that will remain this season.

‘Negotiations we have with them or anybody else are completely confidential and we can’t talk about that.’

Lawwell, meanwhile, insists Celtic have had no offers for players, despite interest from numerous clubs in England for striker Gary Hooper, Victor Wanyama being linked with Manchester United and Beram Kayal being watched by Norwich boss Chris Hughton.

Refusing to give up hope of securing top scorer Hooper on a new contract, he insisted: ‘I’ve had one call for one player. But it wasn’t an offer, just a “what’s the story?” call.

‘That suits me fine. Neil wants to keep the squad together and, if we can, that’s what we will do. If we can add to it, we will add to it.

‘Ideally, we would like to keep Gary. Neil wants him to stay, we want him to stay. He has been a revelation here.

‘Gary has the last 16 to keep him here. He has Celtic. He has everything that goes around Celtic.

‘We would hope to hold on to him in January. We would hope to hold on to all our players in January and get into the last 16 because the manager wants it and that’s what we will try and do.’

Celtic’s latest recruit, Rami Gershon, will join the squad at their Spanish training camp, while Australian kid Tom Rogic will also train with the club.

Refusing to rule out further captures, Lawwell added: ‘We have set down a strategy in terms of the type of player we want to bring in.

‘We want someone with the right ability, undervalued if you like, and someone we can develop and see how it goes.

‘In terms of marquee signings, someone asked me about that, but what is a marquee signing?

‘Is it £80,000 a week? £90,000 a week? Those days are gone. In fact, they were never here.

‘But it’s very difficult to see that happening again.

‘I think we have a good strategy. We are never complacent. We are beginning to see the product of that strategy and we are all committed to making it better.’

  19. corkcelt at 22.16:

When last joint sponsorship was done the Tennants Brand was owned by the Belgian Brewers In-Bev. In late 2009 C&C bought the Tennants Brewery from In-Bev. In other words C&C never entered into any sponsorship deal with the dead Club. Whether they continue the Tenant deal after this year remains to be seen.

    —–

Sorry, corkcelt, I have to correct your chronology there. The current joint Celtic-Rangers sponsorship deal (which runs out at the end of the season) was signed after C&C took over Tennent’s. I know that for a fact.

The rationale at the time was that it didn’t make economic sense in the West of Scotland to put the logo for Tennent’s (a relatively parochial brand) on the jerseys of only one Old Firm team.

That’s not the same for Magner’s, which is very much an international brand.

I think Poundland would be more of a fit for Sevco.

This Magner’s deal will be great for both Celtic and C&C. Much of the credit for progressing the negotiations must go to Peter Lawwell personally.

    Again, that’s a fact.

Now . . . bring on the Juve!

    All that’s changed now.
