Clowns falsifying the Rules

423

As recently as December, Sky Sports contributor and very, very, lapsed Celtic fan, Neil McCann, accused John Guidetti of cheating while simultaneously acknowledging that the player didn’t claim for the penalty McCann thought he didn’t deserve. The mental contortions required to allow McCann to accuse a Celtic player of cheating, while not cheating, was worthy of awe.

Yesterday the same open sore was evident. Craig Gordon fouled Jackson Irvine 23 yards off his line, to the side of the field. Virgil van Dijk was back inside the six yard line with other Celtic players storming back.

McCann waxed lyrical that the Celtic goalkeeper should have been ordered off, claiming “The new rules are simple. Is the Ross County player being denied a goal scoring opportunity?”

He’s half right, the Rules of the Game are clear, they note three sending off offenses for fouls:

Serious foul play
Violent conduct
Denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity

Referee guidance on the third offense is crystal clear; denying a possible goal scoring opportunity is not a sending off offense. Referees are only allowed to show the red card when an obvious opportunity has been denied.

Jackson Irvine could get an early shot off with his left foot (he’s right footed) but it would need to be a spectacular effort from a tight angle. The potential chance was never an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The yellow card decision was correct. These are the Rules of the Game and the guidance referees are given.

The only thing you need to know about yesterday is that if you have a career in the football media, and before you cite the Rules of the Game, you’d better read them. Otherwise you might appear to be a bitter clown who falsifies the rules to suit an agenda.

Dallas Dallas…. There are a lot of people on this site that know Tommy Boyd better than I ever will, but he always remembers his roots, at CqN11 we had two tables as it was my stag night, Tommy came over and asked who was getting married, he was a gent, I asked him to do me one favour, he asked what’s that, I said keep telling it how it is, his reply was “I always do” I then dinghyed him for a photo as “”Grace” was starting, Tommy Boyd is and always will be one of the good guys, we won a watch getting him from Chelsea…….. I think he is like the Maestro and Broony, a lot of people just take them for granted until they are not there

  2. SFTB,

I certainly dont think RD should go if he doesnt qualify on Wednesday, but , bottom line is the guy hasn’t yet won a game that on paper he shouldnt have won.

I had my doubts about him last year, and still not convinced, but, he now seems to recognise that in Europe our best chance of progress is keeping a clean sheet, and scoring at set pieces.

  3. Lubo was world class against juve.

Right up there as a best ever individual performance.

Don’t understand all the negative Ronny stuff, who would you want to replace him, coyle? Keane? Lambert? Give the guy your support

Just before Lubo got subbed in the game he nutmegged Nedved, never showed in the highlights, he actually “made” 3 of the goals

  6. Sport scene uses great graphic with angles to show why it could have been a scoring opportunity, well if the rest of the world had frozen still.

They should try that for when collum was looking the opposite way,

Gerry faethebrig, Tomm Boyd is a real gem. He was at the school my children went to’s sports day about ten years ago, I had a quick chat with him. He was great.

    Joe Joe John bobby teddy.

Ronny is doing his job, any negatives, it’s just their opinion the question I want answered for the Ronny negatons is did they celebrate our last title and league cup win ? If they did why be so annoyed about Steven MacLean doing us out of a treble……..

Ronny is doing just fine…..if he gets us to the CL group stages all the Ronny doubters must think this season is better than last ?????

    (Still quietly confident)

  9. How shite is Sportscene? A programme WAY past it’s sell-by date. Two minute cli of the Champions (including a disgracefully short segment of JC raising the flag) and the most shallow of discussion/analysis afterward. What’s the feckin’ point of this?

If Tommy was playing when the horribles beat us at Celtic Park in 1999, I don’t think we would have lost that game.

Your post pretty much sums it up for me. As yet, Ronny has done nothing that we wouldn’t currently expect under the current circumstances but that doesn’t mean that he should walk if things go wrong on Wednesday.

    .

    .

The board have backed him financially and supported him with the decisions like not playing pre season games in far flung places.

    .

He needs to deliver CL group stages this year or next I believe.

Spoke to Tam Boyd on several occasions in the number 7 that he hosts, a true gentleman, Celtic to the core.

Btw, any time I have spoke to him or other former giants that played for us my voice becomes a squeak like a wee bhoy. :(

I see there is pitch problems for Wednesday

    ———————————-

We’ve got 99 problems, but the pitch ain’t one..

  15. Before I forget massive thumbs up for the 2 Celts who came down to the ticket office queue yesterday when I was waiting to buy tickets for Partick Thistle away next week. These 2 gentlemen enquired if anyone was buying tickets for yesterday’s game and said they had 2 spares – they didn’t want any money, just to ensure that the tickets got used rather than wasted. Two very happy fans went off with these kind souls. It warmed the cockles of my heart, especially on the Kano collection day, truly in keeping with the best traditions of the Celtic Family. HH to those fine men, and all here present.

Hope you are enjoying your holiday, I don’t usually disagree with you but I think Ronny is on the one road, not sure if it’s the wrong road but I am sure he will take us there (CL group stages)

Cqn good night & God bless and enjoy Ronny, there are enough people out there wanting to put the boot in

First game of the season and Sportscene reeks of agendas.

It’s a real shame these clowns still get to influence the opinions of the ever decreasing number of viewers the BBC has for this pretence of Scottish football analysis.

First post on the new look site.

Good to hear the voice of Archie MacPherson again on the telly. Like the retro graphics during the Utd-Ann highlights, especially the teamlists.

Sorry my phone was convinced that was United v Annan! You all know I meant AbBerdeeN, right?

  20. Tricoloured Ribbon on

Watched the Dundee United v Aberdeen game today.

His fortunate goal aside,I thought Kenny McLean played really well.

Looks a really decent player to me.

I see Sevco freed him as a youth player.Numbskulls.

Both of you make fairer points than just stating the entitlement view of “if we don’t make C- someone has to walk”

We do have to keep a foothold in touch with the merry-go-round that is CL participation. If you fall off for a couple of years it gets harder to get back there.

However, in present circumstances, I cannot see how we can become regular CL party goers or highly relevant or noticeable when we get there. Like all the big clubs in small leagues, we are only there to show, not to win.

  22. Gerryfaethebrig on 2nd August 2015 11:17 pm

    .

I’ve no agendas mate just opinions as a Tim. I’ve stated previously that I have reservations about Ronny but believe that he deserves time.

    .

In my opinion the board have backed him and as a consequence he needs to deliver and that means CL group stages this season or next.

    .

I was absolutely delighted with Wednesday’s result. To win at home and not concede has not been something we’ve done enough of under Ronny. I’m hoping he’s learning and this midweek will be a massive indication whether we have.

    .

We’re 1-0 up, keep it tight.

  23. SFTB

My belief is that as a seeded team we should be reaching the group stages at least every consecutive year. I think that gives allowance for poor performance, inappropriate tactics and incorrect team selection.

  24. Did everyone spot the devious graphic used by Sportscene to highlight the clear goal scoring opportunity denied to Jackson Irvine by Craig Gordon?

Using the width of the goal as the base of the triangle they tapered back to the position where Jackson was when tackled by CG, to show it was a fairly straightforward angle from which to score.

Of course, Jackson had no intention of shooting through or under Craig Gordon, which is why the same snap-shot picture showed the ball a yard and a half to Jackson’s left, where Jackson himself had put it. Now if they had drawn the angle from where the ball was it would not have been such an easy scoring chance but it would still have been a good one.

But the real angle, from which the graphic should have been taken, would have been the point where Jackson would have caught up with the rolling ball, which would have been another yard and a half further left from where the ball was in the picture. Showing that angle would have been realistic and honest- too honest for that shower of EBT employing bassas.

I exempt Archie McPherson from that rant.

  25. SFTB

That’s been my point exactly. I don’t think Irvine would have kept the ball in play never mind score from where the ball ended up.

  26. HT

I think he would have reached the ball but I don’t think he would have hit an instinctive first time finish which is the argument of those who want to say his goal scoring opportunity was a clear one.

Jackson is a fine determined athletic player but he is rugged rather than skillful a defender/defensive mid rather than an attacking force. His chance yesterday was not a great one for him but, if it had been Leigh Griffiths in the same position, the odds on a goal resulting would have gone up.

  27. SFTB

You could be right, I wasn’t at the game but from yesterday’s viewings on TV I was unconvinced that Irvine would have reached the ball never mind score. It’s a yellow card all day long for me.
