Cluj, give Jullien a run, Ian Holloway

403

They may have ejected Celtic from the Champions League, but Cluj did not have the look of genuine contenders for the group stage.  They lost 0-1 at home to Slavia Prague last night, with Masopust (no relation) getting the goal.  The Romanians will almost certainly drop to the Europa League.

AIK arrive in Glasgow today smarting from their home defeat on Sunday.  Scouts from both Celtic and AIK will have taken in each other’s games at the weekend, but it is unlikely much of consequence was learned, or at least, I hope AIK learned little about Celtic.

Whatever reasons lay behind Neil Lennon’s team selections at home to Cluj, Boli Bolingoli and Christopher Jullien both have an additional 90 minutes under their belts, so are more likely to make the line-up, especially if concerns remain about Kristofer Ajer’s shoulder injury.  I know this is not a universal feeling, but I want Jullien to be given a run in the team.  We have scouted this player, there is more to come than we have seen.

Ian Holloway’s comments, where he blamed the EU for football’s new handball rule is a perfect metaphor for our time and the entire Brexit debate.  The world is full of clowns who believe simple answers exist to complex problems.  No weight of logic will shift them, and they are not limited to the Brexit loons, football problems are easy to solve, just ask anyone with no experience.

There’s a source I respect and believe – not always right but, never woefully wrong either – especially around signings and agents – and they’ve intimated that PL has advised agents that we’re waiting on confirmation of qualification in the Europa before we move on signings.

Potentially looking at playing the next 4 games with what we’ve got.

Professional negligence in a very, very volatile market. Considering that the word is we deffo knew Rogers wouldn’t be here for 9.

Especially around Congerton – that should’ve seen heads roll alone for keeping him another 3 months – never mind having some form of quality assurance to check his input/output.

That’s what I feared/suspected is going on but it seems like a busted flush negotiation tactic in a coupla ways:

It disrespects the existing guys who may get us there, only to be ousted by new shoo-ins.

We’ll only get guys to come for money, not for love (or at least prestige) of playing with Celtic.

And it allows the other party to hold the signing at a hostage price – or tout them around others based on our interest – knowing we need Euro quality.

  5. Celtic’s transfer policy is

See if we qualify for CL – then try to sign CL quality players.

    then

See if wee qualify for EL -0 then sign EL quality,

Fail to get into EL then buy PL quality…but run out of time as it’s not that easy to buy players

A policy that guarantees fails over long term

  6. if you scan’t even reach the paly off game why do you think you can reach CL next year with half that team gone and none (well one) in? Improve thee team!!!

  7. NL said weeks ago that no one was coming in till some left…. paraphrasing but he meant what he said. others had to go before any came in.. at that point trying to Punt SS and ON

  8. a back 3 is hopeless… you need 3 players to be used to playing with each other…with a back 4 you only need the CHs to have that close an understaning. and since it seem a lettery who plays then ditch back 3

  9. I know we have 2 games before it but does anyone have any confidence we will win the Glasgow Derby on 1st Sept?

    I for one am not.

    And I’m raging about it

  10. ulysses mcghee - a demographic of one on

I worry more about the possibility we aren’t near having made any final decisions on sales yet – if you ain’t buying until you have knowledge the the same logic applies the other way.

Then the big question is who – or is it whom?

Brexit is a disaster which will hurt millions of people and may well kill some in the north of Ireland.

For all you Celtic supporting Brexiters, try wearing a Celtic top at a Brexit rally and see how long it takes before you are spat on and called a Fenian c***.

Now it may be true that not all Brexiters are racist but when you’re standing shoulder to shoulder with the Orange Order, racists, neo fascists and the extreme right wing of politics at what point do you stop and say to yourself ‘ Wait a second, are we the baddies?’

    Hello

    Hope everybody’s well.

Having a very rare visit to see if there’s any remaining defenders of lawwell, good to see there’s not much evidence of it. The conniving swine has to go.

The rumour above of waiting to see if we qualify for EL before signing if true it’s a sign lawwell truly has lost the plot, repeating his annual CL mistake. Utterly bonkers to leaving the signing of players we need for vital CL qualifiers until after we confirm in/out of the CL, in a normal business that should be instant dismissal, now he’s repeating it in the EL.

As far as historical backwards moves go rodgers to Lennon is like Obama to trump.

We are being mismanaged to the stage where 2018/19 made the brand new sevvies relevant, 2019/20 looks like the season lawwell made them title contenders.

There cannot be any remaining people trying to defend him/the b****** (if asterix swearing is still banned please delete :’)

Are we really looking at a playful wee clip and drawing deep deductions about two players career prospects? All I see is one lad goofing, and a well-known serious sammy looking, well, serious. No wonder Peter and Paul aren’t taking embdy’s comments on here – mine included – seriously.

Honestly the club are wearing a mask. They are sponging money.

    I’ll say it again…

We had £30m cash at the bank and since then sold Tierney. In between that we let the management team go for £6m. We spent £12m in transfers coming in.

I note in the recent quotations from Celtic in relation to the historic child abuse issue, that Celtic believe their insurers will settle the one payment that has been agreed to be due.

I do not wish to open up a debate on the child abuse issue so please do not convolute that issue with the aim of this post.

If Celtics insurers are indeed settling one claim and presumably any future claims then why are they stockpiling this cash with the following narrative history and status in mind?

Lustig and Gamboa left and we have signed 1 right back who played the majority of his recent career at Centre Back.

Tierney and Izaguirre left with only 1 replacement being signed.

Compper, Benkovic and Boyata have left with only 1 replacement being signed.

Turnbull was lined up as a signing for midfield but no replacement signing has been made. Presumably we needed a centre mid? So why no other movement? Where we just signing him because we made a hash of McGinn last year and ended up with a spy in the camp in the form of Moloumbo. We did sign the lad from Bolton who is no we’re near the first team.

We took up the years extension on Sinclair with a view to getting a fee for him. That failed then we end up with his salary until January at the earliest and then we sign another project winger today!

    Wingers –

Arzani, Forrest, Morgan, Sinclair, Hayes, Johnstone, Shved. 7! Players for two positions.

We have two number 10s in Christie and Rogic. Neither will last the season without an injury.

Brown doesn’t seem to present as being an ageing midfielder to those in charge. We failed so far to offload Kouassi who was meant to replace Brown.

McGregor played 69 games last season. If we sell Ntcham who plays in place of McGregor should he get injured or suffer from burn out?

Up front we have Eddy and Griff. Normally 3 players would be enough but Bayo seems as in vogue as Kouassi. Eddy gets injured and you have a 70% fit players to rely on.

Honestly – who plans this? Who scouts and who tries to sell and buy? It’s a shambles.

  20. Rock Tree Bhoy – I find it incredible that James Forrest has deliberately piggybacked this blog to promote his own blog for years but is on here having a go at Paul67. Go figure.

  21. If, and it’s a big if, we did manage to sign Meling it seems to me it will have been the many various bloggers and Celtic Twitter accounts that will have scouted him and made the board go and get him

    Incredible

  22. CHAVEZ:

    Let me tell you something, and this will sound harsh;

I don’t need to “piggyback” on this blog for numbers, and never have. How many article of mine do you see posted on here, by me? A handful at best?

I write and publish four or five of them EVERY SINGLE DAY … and when I criticise Paul openly and forthrightly I tend to do it here rather than blog about it.

My frustration gets the best of me every once in a while on that score.

Your point is nonsense, absolute nonsense.

Maybe you haven’t noticed, but we’re a shambles going into the game tomorrow night. And every blog is talking about it except one. So please, spare me.

  24. we have a ‘business’ board running a football club.

we make them the $$$ and they mostly keep the $$$

unless its getting shiny lights, hotels and nice pathways.

investment on the park, minimal, no more than ‘just enough’

    – as long as we keep filing in and providing the $$$ then they’ll trot out the sweet ‘more than a club’ cards…’best fans in the world’ cards… with a nice new P.A system too.

    it’s gone too far.

the Celtic F.C board needs to look at Ajax – invest to progress… NOT wait for progress before investment.

our board are disconnected from us peasants, the fan base.

we need an invigorated, energised board that shares our passion.

Celtic F.C is more than a business club… someone needs to tell the board that.

If that is true we really are a joke. Is the Club deliberately being run into the ground? Leaving aside Europe, is the current squad strong enough to win the League?

  26. Maybe you want to focus your ire and your angst where, in my humble opinion, it belongs.

The manager is having a go at the fans and the media today over the coverage of last weeks game. It’s like a lot of people at Celtic live in a fantasy bubble in the same way as they do over at Ibrox … last week was a shocking result and a shocking performance, with inexcusable mistakes made.

And our manager thinks that the critics created that situation.

He is losing the plot, and those above him at the club are fiddling whilst Rome burns.

There is a VERY REAL chance we’ll lose tomorrow night and be halfway to being out of Europe completely. And you want to blame the way me and some of the bloggers are covering it?
