Cole, Kazim-Richards, keeping the receipt

566

“News” broke this morning that Carlton Cole has left Celtic. Next they’ll be telling us the Berlin Wall has fallen.

Carlton had ‘left the building’ some time ago. Last month I asked about him in unflattering terms “Didn’t look like a Celtic player on paper or on the field, so why did we sign him?”. He was a pay-as-you-play punt, available to sign between transfer windows. If he could cut it, he’d get a game and be paid, if not, he wouldn’t cost a penny.

He didn’t work out (of course), but there’s no real harm in taking punts like this. I suspect Celtic also had a break option in Colin Kazim-Richards contract which allowed them to encourage him out of town this month. He was another bizarre looking signing who didn’t work out, but unlike Carlton, at least we got the odd shift out of Colin.

Don’t look for top-level strategy in all this but you’ll find a low-level strategy known at Celtic Park as ‘Keep the receipt” business. Get them in, get an option to make the move permanent, but give yourself an out, in case the warning signs have substance.

In short, the Carlton Cole-Colin Kazim-Richards strategy looks indiscriminate but it’s not really. Making transfer mistakes is a problem for all, but if you’re going to do it, and every club does, make cheap mistakes.

Ment to say bye Colin bye carlton and hopefully bye bye to that policy at Celtic park.

  2. Paul,

We shouldn’t be taking ‘punts’ on anyone. We need a proper recruitment strategy. We are forever signing players on the last day of the window, that tells its own story.

  5. If we are not going to go and buy a striker who scores goals why waste any more time of the like son Cole and Richards, promote from the academy and if you’re good enough you’re old enough.

Waste of valuable jersey space and wages buying strikers who don’t score…

I hope really hope that we leave this shite behind otherwise there’s no point in the development squad and the

I think if you read through that list you’ll find there are strict limits and conditions such as registering with the police, that don’t apply to EEC members in other EEC countries, there are real controls and you must support and prove you can support yourself, there’s also unidentified issues likely speaking the language would be a basic requirement for getting a job,no ? So while you have a point on entry and prospecting, there are far more hurdles to migrating to Norway such as expulsion, than say Germany.

    Paul67,

Thanks. You made things a bit clearer (or is it ‘more clear’?) regarding these types of signings.

If they cost little and had positive influence towards our young players, then that’s fine. If they were paid as much as Supper McMoist while gardening, then that’s just wrong. How much do these guys cost us?

The Mighty Mutant Power Rangers have Josephine Baron (hmmm) and he will have some great advice and motivation for their young guys… if they can understand ‘le philosofique un muppet’.

Did Carlton to more than hope for a game? Was it worth the money?

    Sincerely, genuine questions.

    Ttr,

Most of our signings are not signed on the last day.

We often sign a player on the last day admittedly. Many clubs do.

Do you think the deadline day programme was created just for ra sellic?? ;)

Interestingly it transpires that we actually request EU citizens leave after 3 months if they’re not supporting themselves. We just don’t. They were talking about it on R4 Today, this morning. I think it’s seen as pointless because they can just come straight back and the cycle goes on.

It’s the thinking behind curbing their benefits until they’ve put something in – although given that migrants are net contributors to the economy it’s unlikely that the moves will reduce the tiny % of benefits they take anyway.

Embarrassing no other description is apt, talented youngsters denied we had a development manager ? Tell Peter and John to turn up at CQN 5S still players there are available on a play per pay deal

John James hits the nail on the head and very entertainingly too

However it would be remiss of me not to mention the fact that Monsieur Barton is not at liberté to participate in the Charleston training camp. His fraternité was somewhat lacking as he punched an unconscious man on more than twenty occasions, leaving him in a pool of blood and the discarded junk food of Mr. Barton’s cousin. This was captured on CCTV which led to Mr Barton being sentenced to six months at Her Majesty’s Prison Strangeways in Manchester.

One would have hoped that someone with the hack fraternité would have raised an inquisitive eyebrow in response to this audacious signing. However Keith Jackson, l’imbécile terrible, is closely adhering to the Level 5 script of rehabilitating Mr Barton’s reputation. We have had to endure an aliterative orgy of copy apropos Barton v Brown. We have also had an imaginative tale of Monsieur Barton on the Marseille Metro.Prior to the demise of Rangers and the rise of the SNP, Le Journal en retard (The Daily Record) sold in excess of 300,000 copies every day. They now only sell 176,000 which seriously undermines the rates that they can charge for advertising. Darren Cooney, the sports desk editor of the Retard, is pinning his hopes of a renascence in circulation on a renascent Rangers. No-one has missed Rangers more than the SMSM. Being paid to write about the club you support, and have a dig at CFC, has sustained generations of Rangers media lickspittles. In a classic tale of diner becoming restauranteur, Mangetout Traynor, who feasted on SDM’s succulent lamb, is now serving it daily from his charcuterie in Blythswood Square.

It was somewhat remiss of Mr Jackson and other Level 5 lickspittles not to have informed us that Monsieur Barton would not be eligible to avail himself of an American visa. The United States of America have much higher standards than Rangers. They take a dim view of criminals. Mr Barton’s ineligibility was common knowledge at Newcastle United when he resumed training after a seventy-seven day moratorium in Strangeways.

The argument is that EU migrants reduce wages for UK workers and if we leave the EU we can stop migrants from the EU coming to work here.

The reality is that even if we leave the EU, EU citizens would still be allowed to come here to work.

    So nothing would change.

    That’s the important bit.

Leaving the EU wouldn’t have the effect people are claiming.

Bosman signings available this summer. We are likely already looking at Fletcher. Though King Brennie may prefer Robson-Kanu or Danny Graham.

Just a reminder to those who believe Steven Fletcher would have won us the title in 2009…. He only scored 11 that season. Riordan and Clarkson of Motherwell scored more!

Bosman players we SHOULD be interested in: Joey O’Brien (RB for West Ham and Ireland),

Charles N’Zogbia, Leon Osman, Sessègnon, Kolo Touré

If any of those are interested in a short-term deal for reasonable money, it’d be well worth a punt.

Would be delighted to sign Robson-Kanu though!
