Cole, Kazim-Richards, keeping the receipt

566

“News” broke this morning that Carlton Cole has left Celtic. Next they’ll be telling us the Berlin Wall has fallen.

Carlton had ‘left the building’ some time ago. Last month I asked about him in unflattering terms “Didn’t look like a Celtic player on paper or on the field, so why did we sign him?”. He was a pay-as-you-play punt, available to sign between transfer windows. If he could cut it, he’d get a game and be paid, if not, he wouldn’t cost a penny.

He didn’t work out (of course), but there’s no real harm in taking punts like this. I suspect Celtic also had a break option in Colin Kazim-Richards contract which allowed them to encourage him out of town this month. He was another bizarre looking signing who didn’t work out, but unlike Carlton, at least we got the odd shift out of Colin.

Don’t look for top-level strategy in all this but you’ll find a low-level strategy known at Celtic Park as ‘Keep the receipt” business. Get them in, get an option to make the move permanent, but give yourself an out, in case the warning signs have substance.

In short, the Carlton Cole-Colin Kazim-Richards strategy looks indiscriminate but it’s not really. Making transfer mistakes is a problem for all, but if you’re going to do it, and every club does, make cheap mistakes.

I know an English guy who refuses to give The Republic of Italy proof of his income . That means he is denied the Right of Residence and can only stay in Italy for periods no longer than 110 days . He addresses that problem by taking the ferry to Malta ,staying overnight and then returning to Sicily.

I think you missed the point

Taking a gamble on Cole and Colin Kazim-Richards doesn’t prevent us from signing somebody more promising. The guys aren’t the problem.

The problem is Scepovic, Bangura, Pukki, Balde & Ciftci! These are guys we paid transfer fees for and were getting paid a proper wage (When they weren’t on loan)

    That’s where the strategy fails.

Celtic have always had unattached players plying their wares here. Plenty come and go without getting signed. Some sign and are a success like Stan Varga and Craig Gordon. Some get signed on temporary contracts like Kapo.

PS. I actually think Scepovic and Pukki were decent players. They just didn’t suit Celtic and the hustle and bustle of Scoddish fitba

  3. Here’s another Leave argument that’s going to turn sour for the short to mid-term at the very least.

The imaginary £350m going out weekly, that’s actually £80m net after all the returns. It represents approximately 0.6% of GDP. If we vote Leave it’s almost universally accepted by analysts that the economy will take a hit of 4-6%.

I have some choice expletives for the state this country will be in.

After getting the channel it doesn’t save on your epg. You will always have to select it from the ‘other channels’ option.

Make sure to press green button to save it to allow you to select it though this method.

This blog is special, no doubt. Many real, genuine characters, funny as feck. It’s a great place to come to and not only amusing… it’s enlightening on many levels.

Can’t there be a CQN Back Room… for the good folks to go and discuss more ‘sensitive’ subjects?

Don’t get me wrong. I love people and have a great fascination for all things ‘life’, but it’s clear that not all agree with others’ political/life views. Totally understandable but I believe some have been put-off or even left due to this.

I have a tin-hat but I don’t think I need to wear it yet. I just love this blog, but hate when good folks drag it into another world. It’s great to have debate… but it can often be detrimental to Celtic and the fans…. simply because the tangent takes the mind away from what’s often closer to you.

Please know I don’t judge or want to confront anybodys right of expression. I just feel it could be a positive thing to allow folks to debate things other than Celtic, in another room.

I’m not saying “don’t discuss that here”, I’m just wondering if there’s a wee spare room (supplied by CQN) where they could discuss and debate the serious issues.

My apologies for stepping out of line. Typing while thinking.

Do you think words like ‘mutual respect’ enter into Boris Johnston’s vocabulary. Like it or lump it the days of entitlement are gone?

Boris on one side of the Atlantic and Donald on the other. There’s progress.

    I`d take Boris before Angela.

    Multicultural London voted for Boris.

But it`s a spurious and hypothetical question.

As far as U.S.A. is concerned , I`ll take whatever U.S.A. gives us.

Almost anything would be better than vacuous soundbite Obama .

    Even Hillary.

At least she seems to have cojones.

  11. We on here are all au fait (phrase of the day) with the constant reference to squirrels, in so much as they are used as a comedic euphemism for distracting attention away from a ‘touchy’ subject – e.g. the engaging of Brendan Rodgers was a convenient squirrel in the ‘forget Res 12’ ploy.

However just heard a new version (to me anyway) which has surfaced during the select committee questioning of Sir Phillip Green.

It has been said that the former BHS boss ‘dropped a dead cat’, i.e. “stop staring at me like that”, to distract the said panel and seize the initiative.

So there will no more squirrels from me, rather a new succession of deceased moggies will be my animal of choice.

  12. Carlton Cole and CKR were merely symptoms of a failing regime.

The dugs in the street round Parkhead could have forecast how this pair would fail.

All clubs sign players that simply don’t fit.

    We are no exception.

We’ve signed players who were described as flops at their previous clubs that were pretty good signings for us.

Yes we sign players that many don’t rate and it doesn’t work out and it’d be nice if all players signed were roaring successes but until we are the only club in the world that only signs ‘duds’ I’ll not be losing any sleep.
