Contrasts when trying to punt or retain a left back

493

You well remember the entire Celtic community in a nervous disposition at the prospect of Kieran Tierney leaving the club.  There was certainly no campaign, subtle or otherwise, to punt him after his first weeks in the limelight, he was performing at a Champions League level and we wanted him to remain for as long as possible.

Compare and contrast to what is happening across the city, where left back and occasional central defender, Calvin Bassey, is being excitedly touted by everyone remotely connected with his club.

Earlier this month we discussed the many financial benefits Newco would gain from their Europa League run, including an appreciation on the perceived value of their players.  Bassey is a prime example.  Sell him, sell him now, before the inevitable return to the mean.  Do whatever you can to make sure highlights of his performances this year at Ross County, or home to Celtic, are obscured in searches.

Until recent weeks, it was their chubby striker who was the focus of sale efforts.  He missed out on European games since March, if anything his value will have suffered – a blow to a campaign that’s been running for years.

When transfer heat first took hold around Kieran Tierney, Celtic pulled the stops out and agreed a five-year contract.  The player had the same balance on his previous contract as Bassey has now.  Celtic got another two years out of the player and sold him for record terms (with a persistent injury).  If Newco were wise – and if they truly rate Bassey, they would spend some of their European bounty on securing the player on a lucrative long-term deal.

“If Newco were wise”, listen to me.

By steering Real to a 35th La Liga title last month, Ancelotti became the first manager to win the league in all five of Europe’s major leagues.

    To all,

I watched that BBC programme last night about our winning the league. It was more an attempt to say what a wonderful season the team from Govan had. Miller has obviously decided he’s a follow follower.

Morning all, May 28th 1888 saw a new football team play its first match. 2000 fans watched Celtic defeat Rangers Swifts by 5-2. It was to be the start of a remarkable story.

Uvalde funeral parlours, burying the kids at no cost to the families, another horrific episode in America, there will be another one next week.

  12. Years ago (too many 😀) I was shown a simple way to gauge positivity/negativity in the written word.

Breakfasting in an in-law’s house this morning gave me the opportunity to try that technique out again, because lying on the table was a copy of The Herald!

Now it is nearly 15 years since I last paid for that crud, but as there was nothing else around I picked it up. Front page, pack page and a page and a half inside were devoted to Sevco puff pieces. There was a page and a bit about Celtic, but what caught my eye early on were the regular (and often irrelevant) negative references. So, I thought, lets try to do this objectively.

In our media studies lecture of the time the point was to show how choice and use of words could influence a reader’s views over time. Our lecturer gave us copies of two stories about the same topic and two highlighters, one green, one red. The simple trick was to read through each copy and highlight a positive word/term (green) and the negative ones (red).

So I went to work on the Herald stories and guess what? Over 80% of the three Sevco pieces were positive and 60% of the single Celtic copy contained negative usage! Now there’s a shock, ….. not.

No feckin wonder that crowd are disappearing done the cludgie (not the Seville ones of course).

A plaque on the cemetery wall commemorates the first Celtic Park. It was ironic, given the history of dreadful landlords in Ireland evicting people, that Celtic’s landlord put the rent up hugely, forcing the club to move a few hundred yards to their current home.
